The Angelus Hotel Fourth and Spring Sts Los Angeles European Plan "Just around the corner from everything" In the heart of the Los Angeles business and shopping district and convenient to the theatres and Interurban Station. Reasonable Rates. The Angeles Cafe is one of the most desirable places to dine in Los Angeles. H. J. TREMAIN, President. A. J. ARROLL, Manager. FEASTING IS CUT OUT BY ENGLAND'S RULER King George of England expressed the desire that no "banquet," no dinner, not even the simplest meal should be prepared for him at the public expense during his recent visit to Manchester. This request or order, marks a change in royal habits. Banqueting has always played a considerable part in royal tours, and British royalties have generally been able to do justice to the fare provided for them, though their tastes have occasionally been simple, as in the case of George III, and his boiled mutton, turnips and barley water. His grandfather liked a good meal, though at other people's expense, as when he ordered his cook to "get me all de varieties" for supper after a satisfactory division in the house of commons. Queen Ann was a very doughy trenchwoman most of her days, and so was her sister Mary. George IV. inclined more naturally to the liquid side of banquets, was drunk at his own marriage, and when he went to Ireland fairly drank the ship dry. His brothers never finched at table, and the multitude o'f them must have cut considerably into the revenues of those who had to entertain them. Creevy has a pretty little picture of young Queen Victoria "gobbling" her dinner in her early days and making good resolutions to reduce her lunch-eons to a cup of broth, but she remained a healthy eater. Indeed throughout the Victorian era it was understood that when any member of the royal family went out to tea it was essential to supplement the lighter fare with some fairly substantial sandwiches. King Edward shortened the length of meals, but he ate his share. A petition signed by thousands of teachers has been presented to the home secretary, and temperance reformers are pressing parliament for a bill. Attention is called to the fact that the mother country is behind the dominions in such restrictions. In Australia the age limit for the sale of intoxicants has been fixed at 18 and in New Zealand, Tasmania, Ontario and Nova Scotia at 21. In France, Poland and Czecho-Slovakia the age is 18; in Sweden 17. She has been through more than half the states and now is on her way home to Ione, Wash., where she is the owner of a quarter section of home-steaded land. Accompanied only by "Lady Bird," her horse, which she bought in Seattle in June, 1915, and "Za Za," a Boston terrier, Miss Thingelstad soon is to start for Kansas City to spend the winter. Next spring she will leave on the last lap of her trip home. She has worked practically at every occupation a woman can do, supporting herself and her companions, and preparing for future trips. Her first consideration, invariably, is for her animals. With a complete knowledge of office work, she avoided large cities and always sought occupations local to the community where she was stopping. She prefers to camp out at night, but does no cooking on the road, buying all her meals at restaurants or houses along her way. Each night she plans to reach a farm house where a comfortable stall may be provided for Lady Bird, but she and Za Za sleep in the yard or in the orchard, using the blankets she carries strapped to her saddle. UNION PACIFIC CUTS DINING CAR PRICES Another "wallop" has been taken by the Union Pacific at dining car prices. Just recently this company reduced the price of nearly every item on its menu, including coffee, bread and butter and other staple foods. At that time all potato orders were reduced five cents in price. Now comes the announcement by F. E. Lewis, manager Union Pacific MAN'S DEATH IS DUE TO HIS COMPLEXITY It seems a mystery that creatures which consist of a single cell may never die, while higher animals and plants are limited to a life of a few years. The explanation is to be found in the very complexity of these higher-forms of life. Says the Journal of the American Medical association: "Protozoa may in a sense be immortal. Germ cells are likewise immortal. The modern transplantation experiments have demonstrated that certain somatic cells, such as tumors contain, may continue to live and grow indefinitely. But by their specialization the higher forms forego the power of independent and indefinitely continued existence. This is the price paid for the differentiation of special functions. Thus, says Pearl, if in such an interlocking and mutually dependent system any one part through accident or in any way whatever gets deviated from its normal functioning, the balance of the whole system is upset. If the departure of any part from its normal functional course is great enough to be beyond correction promptly through the normal regulatory powers of the organism, death of the whole will surely ensue." Ice cream to the amount of 15,000-000 gallons is consumed in this state each year. Annou That on and af Which Is Thank Another "wallop" has been taken by the Union Pacific at dining car prices. Just recently this company reduced the price of nearly every item on its menu, including coffee, bread and butter and other staple foods. At that time all potato orders were reduced five cents in price. Now comes the announcement by F. E. Lewis, manager Union Pacific dining car service, that potatoes will be served free of charge, with certain items. This free service will be made in connection with what is known as "De Luxe" items. At each meal on all Union Pacific dining cars, in addition to the regular menu and the "Special Today" menu, there will be served a special "de luxe" item for that meal only. For instance at luncheon the item may be mountain trout de luxe. The trout will be served at the price of the trout only but will be accompanied by an order of Julienne potatoes. Or, say the "de luxe" item be sugar-cured ham—the order will include a service of candied yams. Some of the de luxe items include things other than potatoes. For instance breakfast sausage de luxe brings with the sausage an order of griddle cakes of whatever kind the patron may desire. It is expected that this new service will become very popular and result in a large saving to the traveling public. "This innovation by the Union Pacific is made in line with our policy of passing on to the public any reduction in food costs," said M. de Braant, assistant traffic manager of the Union Pacific. "It is our intention to do everything in our power to reduce traveling costs and we are constantly trying to devise ways and means of reducing prices wherever it can be done consistent with high-class food and service." Some time ago the Union Pacific installed a special "tray, service" for tourist and coach passengers over its line. This tray service includes sandwiches, etc., and hot coffee, served from the dining car after meal hours at prices under the regular dining car prices. As a consequence of these various kinds of service, it is possible for passengers on the trains of the Union Pacific to dine with as little or as much expense as the individual may select to pay. We Call and Deliver ARRESTED IN JULY FREED IN ICY WIND PRISONER IS PEEVED Sylvester Jaaska was released from the Chicago jail recently, but instead of being grateful, he took his release as a personal affront. Jaaska was locked up last July on a conspiracy charge, and when he came into the court room a few days ago he was nattily attired in a Palm Beach suit, a gaudy sport shirt, pale silk hose and white buckskin shoes. Likewise he had a straw hat and carried a jaunty bamboo cane. “What is this—a masquerade?” demanded the judge. “No, your honor,” replied Jaaska, “these are all the clothes I have. The police deposited men in the cold storage jail last July.” Well, I’ll release you on bail so you can get some winter clothing,” said the judge. A bailiff with a frozen ear followed Jaaska to the door to see the effect of his attire on the crowds, hurrying through the icy streets. Jaaska stepped out blithely, whistling the "Spring Song." The crowds thought he was in the advertising game or being initiated in a Greek letter fraternity, or possibly doing some moving picture stunt, and gave him no heed whatever. Early in the sixteenth century wooden rails were laid in certain English colliers, over which a cart loaded with coal could be drawn by a horse. This was the crude beginning of railways. Later a strip of iron was laid on top of the rail, and about 1767 rails made entirely of iron were introduced. Considerable increase in grape acreage is planned for the Le Grand district.
