PAIGE DEVELOPING NEW LIGHT CAR
It is being rumored about among automobile men in Detroit that Paige dealers, in addition to the present Paige line, will have something new in the way of an automobile to offer the public about the time of the New York and Chicago shows. Except that the new automobile will be a revolution in the low-priced light car field, no definite information is as yet available at the Paige factory.
When interviewed on the subject, H. M. Jewett, president of the company, had this comment to make about the new car and the 1922 market:
"We recognize that buying habits have changed and pocketbooks are thinner than they were. There is a very large class of people that want a car that is low in price, that is economical to operate and maintain, but that is also beautiful, comfortable, and with a performance second to none. Such a car can be purchased, and it is our ambition to see that the motoring public gets it."
To measure up to the standards I have mentioned—and they are the standards of the American people today—a car must be smooth running and quiet. It must accelerate rapidly and smoothly. It must have speed and be a real hill climber. All this can be done—with beauty and comfort thrown in—at a really low price. We are confident we have achieved it in a car that will be a revelation to the motor buying public of America."
BRIGHT LIGHTS DIM ON BARBARY COAST
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 21. Bright lights were dimmed last night along the avenue known around the world as San Francisco's "Barbary Coast." This district, long a haunt of seafaring men and curiosity seekers, withstood the onslaught of prohibition.
The cafes were converted into "soft drink" parlors. The women entertainers were allowed to remain. Two weeks ago Police Captain Arthur A. Layne, in charge of this district, decided the feminine lure must be eliminated. He made repeated raids which were resisted by the cafe owners, but last night padlocks appeared on doors which for years had swung freely.
The Thalia, the Tivoli and a number of other resorts voluntarily were closed by the owners, the police reported.
MOUNTAIN OF SOAP FOUND IN ARKANSAS
A whole mountain of soap has been found in the northern part of Arkansas by Elmer Bird, a mining engineer, who thinks the discovery will add greatly to the mineral wealth of the state. Mr. Bird says the mineral is saponite, a natural soap, and that such a vast bed has been discovered that it is believed to contain several hundred thousand tons.
So great is the faith in this mineral as a soap that plans have practically been completed for the formation of a company for the mining and converting of the mineral into a cleaning powder and placing it on the market.
