Rupert Hughes Wrote Story For Movie At California
HELENE CHADWICK and ROLAND DUSHTON in "THE OLD NEST" by RUPERT HUGHES. A GOLDWYN PIG TURE directed by REGINALD BARKER
Rarely in the history of any art that requires the co-operation of several distinctive elements do we find a combination of forces needed to create a notable work. When such a combination occurs, it is often a matter of chance. The absence of such perfect in the entire picture. And in this cast, the leading character, an old mother who sees her six children leave the old nest one by one, is played by Mary Alden, an actress of long experience and of such versatility that she plays equally well the young wife, the middle-aged matron and the old out the country who agree to correspond with one of the war veterans.
"Who wants one of these novelties?" asks Herman G. Baca of San Francisco, adjutant of the New Mexico department of the American Legion. He will see that one is forwarded every girl who writes to him and presses a willingness to correspond with a convalescent veteran.
The jumping beans are dark brown somewhat larger than the ordinary bean. The animation of the bean caused by a tiny worm that crawls into it and eats the edible portion. The worm dies but the bean keeps jumping.

LOS ANGELES FIELD
Drilling in gray shale and sand 3900 feet the Eddystone Oil Corporation's Burkhart well at Palms is beginning to look a little doubtful. Drilling, however, is to continue till a deep test well.
With a string of 6 inch casing down to 2587 the Beatty Oil Company ready to resume operations at East Rok. The gray shale that characterized the formation almost from the start disappeared at 2500 and blue shale and sandy shale have been running alternately since.
The Loma Verdi Oil Company recently taken over by the Eddystone Oil Corporation is now drilling at 2250 in brown shale. Loma Verdi is a Cattic wild cat and will prove up a new field.

Rarely in the history of any art that requires the co-operation of several distinctive elements do we find a combination of forces needed to create a notable work. When such a combination occurs, it is often a matter of chance. The absence of such perfect co-operation in the creation of motion pictures is, doubtless, responsible for the comparatively few masterly pictures that are presented to the public.
The forces that coalesce in a finished film are the author, the director, the cast, and the producer. At last, here in America, such a combination has achieved what film audiences have long wished and hoped for. A genuine photoplay achievement has come to pass. To the uninitiated, it will be known by its title, "The Old Nest." But to those who care for particulars, let it be said that Rupert Hughes has written a story with universal appeal that he has found in Reginald Barker a director with the sympathy necessary to catch the pathos and humor of the story, as well as the ability to give it concrete form. Moreover, the author has found a producer in Goldwyn, with all the facilities to make a complete, unstinted production, and a cast of such excellent merit that every scene is played as though it were the only one in the entire picture. And in this cast, the leading character, an old mother who sees her six children leave the old nest one by one, is played by Mary Alden, an actress of long experience and of such versatility that she plays equally well the young wife, the middle-aged matron and the old grandmother equally well.
In the case of a photoplay in which all the forces concerned in its production meet for perfect results, it is difficult to analyze the work of each. Rupert Hughes did not give the preparation of his scenario to another but did the work himself. He is unusual among photoplaywrights, in that he knows how to attain technical effects, and is capable of directing a picture himself.
Furhtremore, the director, Reginald Barker, found in Mr. Hughes' story the material he has always been eager to present on the screen. Author and director together worked out effects and scenes until the final photoplay became the visualization of their hopes. Finally, the work of Mary Alden in the hole of the mother, developed into a revelation to everyone concerned with the making of "The Old Nest." Miss Alden has had long experience as a character actress, but never before has she had a chance to show how marvelously she could portray the emotions of a woman at various periods of her life from youth to old age. Not only are the emotional moments poignant and true, but Miss Alden presents the gradually debilitated woman as life leads her, step by step, down the ladder of time.
A great motion picture has at last been made. And it bears the label, "Made in America." It will be shown at the California theater for two days beginning at tomorrow's matinee.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Nov. 15.—Novel methods of collecting membership dues have been adopted by local posts of the American Legion.
Out in Kansas a post gave its finance committee carte blanche in its collection campaign and a few days later the Legionnaries were routed out of bed at 4 a.m., by members of the committee, who refused to let the ex-service man resume his slumbers until he had paid up.
Another post caused a grand rush to pay 1922 dues when it was announced that the last man to pay would suffer the derision of spending an evening in an improvised guard house.
The various departments of the Legion have entered into a contest for the honor of being the first to send in the dues of its membership.
A chicken that came into the world "shimmying" and grew to full size in spite of its affliction, was one of the attractions at the "Joy Day" celebration of the Hedrick, Iowa, post of the American Legion. It was billed as "the world's only shimmying chicken."
A five-mile walking race will be held Thanksgiving day by the Charles A. Learned Post of Detroit, Mich. Both men and women have entered the contest. Only Legionnaries are eligible. Prizes valued at more than $1,000 will be offered.
Joseph Semtich, a World War veteran who lost a leg in the Argonne, walked seven miles at the head of the Shelblan, Mo., post of the American Legion in the Legion parade at Kansas City. Semtich gets around with the aid of a crutch.
SANTA FE, New Mexico, Nov. 15.—Lookie! Watch it! There it goes! These exclamations will soon be heard all over the United States, with the distribution of thousands of genuine Mexican jumping beans.
The jumping beans have been trained to leap through hoops and stand unhitched by the 5,000 disabled war veterans recuperating in this state. They are to be sent to girls through-

Not such a bad come-back at that
WE WERE all sitting,
IN THE smoking car.
AND HARRY, who admits,
HE'S A born comedian.
TURNED TO me and said.
"I'D BEEN reading about,
SPIRIT MESSAGES, and guess.
WHAT HAPPENED to me.
I DREAMED my watch was gone.
AND WOKE and looked."
OF COURSE I had to bite.
AND ASK, "Was it gone?"
AND HE said, "No—
BUT IT was going."
SO THEY kidded me till,
I THOUGHT I'd get hunk,
SO I said, "Well,
I DREAMED one day.
WHILE RIDING with Harry,
THAT THE barn was burning."
AND HE said, "No—
BUT IT was going."
SO THEY kidded me till,
I THOUGHT I'd get hunk.
SO I said, "Well,
I DREAMED one day.
WHILE RIDING with Harry,
THAT THE barn was burning.
BUT WOKE up and gosh.
IT WAS Harry's cigarette."
AND HARRY said,
"NOT TODAY, old dear.
I'M SMOKING your kind now."
AND PULLED a pack,
OF "SATISFY'S."
AND THE only come-back,
I COULD scare up was.
"ISN'T THAT glassine wrapper.
GREAT FOR keeping.
CIGARETTES FROM drying.
EVEN IN hot air?"
EXTRA! The Chesterfield moisture-proof wrapper. Increases our cost, not yours—but it's good business, for it adds to your enjoyment. It preserves the delicate flavor of these wonderful Turkish and Domestic tobaccos, and keeps the cigarettes firm, fresh and good-tasting whatever the weather.
