Smoking by Women
Will Grow Beards in Time, Claims Parsee
Will excessive smoking cause women to take on masculine characteristics, even grow beards on their faces?
From Paris comes the startling news that French doctors are able to prove by statistics that alcohol and cigarettes cause these abnormal growths on feminine faces.
If this be true, then it should be the most effective argument ever offered against the use, by women, of cigarettes. Fear of losing her delicate facial beauty will cause her to give up what a woman would never relinquish in response to moral teaching.
If only other disputed customs of humanity showed results in this undeniable fashion, it would be easy to halt many other excesses.
There is still the question of marriage and divorce, which was discussed recently at the All-Cults Medical association by Col Dinshah Ghadiali, metaphysician and psychologist. He said:
"The whole trouble is in women trying to be the equals of men—they can never be. They always have been, and always will be, men's superiors. Woman is supreme, especially in the development of the race, for, no matter what a man may achieve, he can never become a mother.
"That is why I am against women degrading themselves with drink and smoking. It will be a great calamity if women take up the vices that men are now setting aside. But nothing can be done by class legislation or laws made against one sex or the other. Woman has the same right as man to do a thing. There should be no legislation against any particular sex, race, color or creed in this country.
"Morality cannot be forced by law. We must educate people to it. Girls must be taught by their mothers their place in the world."
Col. Ghadiiali, or Col. Dinshah, as he is often called, has had a varied and picturesque career. He is a Parsee, born in Bombay, India, and from early childhood has shown intense interest in research work of scientific nature. For thirty years he has studied light, heat, electricity, and magnetism, and has found in certain light waves valuable curative properties. Col Dinshah is also a psychologist of acute perceptions.
"I am neither faddish nor fanatic," Colonel Dinshah said, "but I am a sworn enemy of smoking.
The poisons that are in nicotine brings discord to the former harmonies of matrimony.
"The second reason for unhappiness is that often a wife cannot rise along with her husband as he advances in the world. Then tastes vary as to the way to enjoy life, and this difference may not be apparent till a long time after marriage.
"In man and women there are two factors, self and sex. The man who is devoted to a woman submerges himself and asks her to marry him. Normally the two factors are equally distributed in the personality of men and women. But woman makes man lose him equilibrium for the while and tumbles him over from his high ego.
"What we need to settle many marital problems is a court without lawyers—a tribunal of common sense, presided over by psychologists who have regard for human nature and its faults.
"Now do not think I believe in any form of free love. I do not, and I am a strong advocate of marriage to promote happy family life. Free love cannot exist. The only sensible solution is to understand that marriage is no more a civil contract and should be dissoluble when mutual sympathy evaporates. But we must see that the child is always provided for.
"In India, where there is great respect for women, a boy cannot leave home or enter his house without bowing down to the feet of his mother and touching his hand to the forehead.
"Here, in America home life has few ties. For the greater part of enjoyment we look to an outer life away from the hearth, and the wife."
One of the most annoying problems a president has on his hands is congress.
The only state in which man's rights are not equal to woman's is the state of matrimony.

"I am neither faddish nor fanatic," Colonel Dinshah said. "but I am a sworn enemy of smoking."
"The poisons that are in nicotine are not always well understood. They are pyridine, sulphuric acid, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and prussic acid.
"The results of smoking are dry throat, imperfect circulation of the blood with loss of equilibrium and the perfect balance of feminine characteristics which makes her a woman. Then she may take on male characteristics, such as a beard. A woman should not court any masculine habits or characteristics or she will surely lose her own feminine personality. This is produced by a deterioration in gladiator activity. Both men and women have the characteristics of the opposite sex, but one group is always more developed than the other, which lies dormant.
"Women should stay women and not try to take on the characteristics of men.
"In order that the perfect child shall result from marriage a harmonious union is necessary. Eugenics claims to accomplish this, but that science is wrong. It relates only to the physical side of life. I refer, too, to the psychological aspects as well. The perfect mating must be based on the most powerful force in the world, that emotion called love. From the marriage relations of life all happiness and unhappiness result.
"A human being of one sex is drawn to one of the opposite sex because of the difference in polarity. But if these two mating fall short of the proper ideal as demanded by nature, the psychical side of nature revolts. The man thinks the girl should be the ideal woman he has read about in stories, and the girl wants him to be her ideal hero. Thus, disillusion
