BACTERIA NEEDED TO PRESERVE LIFE We should not jump to the conclusion that the words "bacteria" and "microbes" are synonymous with disease and disaster. Although for instance, the word "microbe" carries with it the idea of something extremely undesirable, it is well known that these microscopic organisms are a necessary part of all natural processes, and that without them the higher forms of life would be impossible. An interesting series of experiments bearing on this point was conducted by a French scientist, who communicated the results thereof to the Academy of Science at Paris. Rabbits were employed for the purposes of the experiments, in order to ascertain the value of food that had been sterilized. The animals fed on vegetables that had been freed from all bacterial life by the most careful treatment soon died from enteric affections due to non-assimilation of their doctored food. But another group of rabbits, fed on vegetables that had been sterilized but afterward purposely impregnated with a broth in which bacteria had been artificially cultivated, not only lived, but became fat under the treatment. The inference is that there are certain bacilli that are indispensable to the digestive function, and that, in sterilizing food, we may be causing more mischief than if we left it alone. Radium To Enhance Value of All Gems A fascinating topic is introduced by the experiments recently made with radium, to convert gems of little value into valuable ones. So long ago as 1907 Professor Bordas was struck by the fact that glass tubes in which radium was kept always took on a very beautiful azure tint. This he attributed to the fact that the radium revived the traces of manganese left in the glass. He therefore began experimenting with corundum and radium. Corundum is found in its natural state, either quite cobbless or of a dull brown, blue, or violet tint. It is almost pure aluminum. ANNOUNCEMENTS A SMALL RANCHMENT means Joaquin. In the Matter of the Estate of Charles Bird Berger, Deceased. Notice is hereby given that Friday, the 25th day of November, 1921, at 10 o'clock a.m., of said day, at the Court room of this Court. Department No. 2, in the City of Santa Ana, County of Orange, State of California, has been appointed as the time and place for hearing the application of Alice D. Berger, praying that a document now on file in this Court, purporting to be the last Will and Testament of the said deceased, be admitted to probate. that Letters Testamentary be issued thereon to her, at which time and place all persons interested therein may appear and contest the same. Dated Nov. 15th, 1921. J. M. BACKS, County Clerk. LEONARD EVANS. Atty. for Petitioner. Pub. Nov. 15 to 25, inc. CERTIFICATE OF CO-PARTNERSHIP TRANSACTING BUSINESS UNDER FICTITIOUS NAME. We, the undersigned, do hereby certify that we are co-partners transmitting a general retail and wholesale the experiments recently made with radium, to convert gems of little value into valuable ones. So long ago as 1907 Professor Bordas was struck by the fact that glass tubes in which radium was kept always took on a very beautiful azure tint. This he attributed to the fact that the radium revived the traces of manganese left in the glass. He therefore began experimenting with corundum and radium. Corundum is found in its natural state, either quite colorless or of a dull brown, blue, or violet tint. It is almost pure alumina, and its crystals are extraordinary hard. The oriental ruby, sapphire, topaz and amethyst are all varieties of corundum, but while these are precious stones, corundum is of commercial value only. Taking small crystals of corundum, Professor Bourdas placed them in contact with a tube of radium, and left them untouched for a month. At the end of that time the corundum crystals had lost their muddy appearance; the colorless crystals had become clear yellow, like the theotopaz; the blue green as the true emerald; while the violet had turned to real sapphire blue. The once almost valueless crystals had, in fact, been transformed into real gems, and what nature effects in the process of untold ages had been accomplished by science within a few weeks. “If owing to larger supplies of redium, salts, the process can be made a commercial success, it will mean much to the jewelry trade.
