NINE THOUSAND KILLED BY AUTOS
WASHINGTON, Nov. 2.—Nine thousand, one hundred and three persons were killed in the United States by automobiles and other motor vehicles, except motorcycles, during 1920, the census bureau announced today. This represents a death rate of 10.4 per cent per 100,000 in population and is one per cent higher than the motor vehicle fatalities in 1919.

MARINE RECRUITING OFFICER SAYS MANY MEN ARE UNDERWEIGHT
"It's mighty disheartening turn down most of these fellows," Lieutenant Miller. "They are on average high types of men, just kind we want for the marines. We are rejecting about 38 per cent of applicants for this reason."
"These are the men who have walked the streets looking for a while their money has been dwelling. They cut down on food the thing, their luncheons are reduced a sandwich, and then omitted entitlement." "A man 5 feet 6 inches weighs 132 pounds. We get fellows of this height who weight or 125 pounds. They don't come up to the standard in weight though they are all right in every other part." "Worry and lack of food has put them down."
"You take a man who is proud really wants to work—that's the way that aspiries to the marines. We did lower our requirements, even in days—we didn't have to. And the really worth while fellows who can find a job think of us and come to—and then, for a matter of five or eight pounds in weight, we have to re-them."
"We do what we can, but of course there's no fund for bringing applications up to the required weight. We had a case of a college graduate, an exp-accountant. This man was stopping a good hotel while hunting for a position. His funds got lower and lower and he cut down on his food. He too proud to communicate with people in Canada, and then, two weeks ago, he came in here. Its weight below the standard."
"I had a talk with him, and finally he admitted that he'd had practical nothing to eat for eight days. We in touch with his people, and the naval officer says many men are underweight."

BREWERIES SLOW TO SELL BEER.
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov., 2.—Although local prohibition agents have received instructions under which "medicinal beer" can be sold immediately, breweries today were a bit timid about placing their product on the market.
“There is some doubt whether the rulings are such as to make brewing profitable”, one brewing company announced.
Wherefore the brewers said they would merely mark time until they had further information.
News Notes of the Oil Fields
(Continued From Page Three)
ing job at 3100, lost the hole and moved the rig 40 feet east. Rigging up has been completed at Moore Syndicate 1-A and the well spudded in yesterday.
The Miley-Keck Company is busy with five wells at Huntington. No. 1 at 2590 is sidetracking pipe. No. 6 at 2600 lost the hole and now the rig is being skidded to a new location. No. 7 set 10 inch at 3431. No. 8 sundded in early in the week and shows 1500 feet of hole.
The Peerless Petroleum Company was granted permission to go ahead to 2850 feet and set pipe. The well is now standing cemented.
The Pacific Oil and Gas Company set the 8 inch at 2555 in the blue shhade. The well has been showing up rather good.
Petitfills Syndicate No. 2 came in a 200 barrel well last Monday, went up to 300 barrels and then sanded up. Cleaning out will put this one back into good condition and probably increase its initial production. The rig is going up for Petitfills Syndicate No. 4.
At 3360 the Petroleum Midway's Smythe No. 1 is ready to "blow" in and go on production. Water was successfully shut off at 3354. Smythe No. 2 is building rig. Towers No. 1 at 3375 looks like a real oil well. Water was shut off at 3354 and the drilling was resumed with considerable difficulty on account of the heavy gas pressure and large quantity of oil in the hole. Elliott No. 1 shows 1675 feet of hole. Ray Walker No. 1 is being held up for a cement there we can, but of course there's no fund for bringing application up to the required weight. We have case of a college graduate, an exp accountant. This man was stopping a good hotel while hunting for a pigeon. His funds got lower and low and he cut down on his food. He too proud to communicate with people in Canada, and then, two weeks ago, he came in here. His weight was below the standard.
"I had a talk with him, and finally he admitted that he'd had practical nothing to eat for eight days. We in touch with his people, and they sent him the fare home. I got a letter yesterday—he's gained three and half pounds in nine days—and he makes the rest of the weight he coming back to enlist with us."
“It’s hard to turn down these boys if we had a fund we could reach the type of men who’d be a credit to corps, and they’d have a loyalty to the service that would be worth while.”
The fellow who thinks he is saving money by staying at home with girl to “bill and coo,” seldom realize the progress he's making towards “bill.”
