LONG BEACH ASSURED REIGN OF PROSPERITY THROUGH OIL BOOMS The discovery of oil on Signal Hill near Long Beach about four months ago and the proven wells that have since come in concentrated the attention of oil men not only throughout the United States but throughout the entire world, and what may be expected at any time now is a wonderful reign of prosperity for Long Beach, through the dynamic operations of a great number of independent companies, who are following the Standard Oil Company, the biggest company in the United States, and the Shell Oil Company, the biggest company of England, who are now successfully drilling in the Signal Hill field. Long Beach business men with their usual enterprise are making ready to occupy the rich tribute of Dame Nature, fully confident that when the new oil industry is in full swing there will be a marvelous expansion of all kinds of business by reason of the thousands which will be added to the present population. Wichita Falls, Texas, experienced a similar boom in the spring of 1919 and in the year following the discovery of oil the Wichita Off Repotrer quotes some statics which are truly amazing except to the big business men of the country. Here it is: "With the bars showing an increase in deposits from $9,678,269.04, at the close of 1918, to $37,622,342.12, or nearly four times the previous year's figures, and with resources of principal reason for this remarkable growth. In fact, to fully appreciate just what oil has meant to Wichita Falls banking houses it is necessary to contrast present figures with the figures for the close of 1917, before the beginning of the development in the Burkburnett town site, and that which followed, all of which has far eclipsed oil production and development during all the ten years in which Wichita county has been a producing area. What Oil Has Done "Deposits in local banks at the end of 1917 totalled $6,332,513 as against $37,622,342.12, and clearings jumped from $31,631,070 to over $200,000,000 for a fraction of the year, around 600 per cent for each item. Why Wichita Falls Profited "Wichita Falls and Wichita Falls banks, of course, have profited more from the oil developments of the country than have residents and institutions of other nearby places. That fact has not, however, followed simply from its more advantageous location, but is to be credited principally to the business acumen and foresight, as well as faith in the Wichita county fields displayed by the men who are directing heads of local banks." "Had not the banks of Wichita Falls been fully alive to their opportunities, and provided the backing which has enabled all of the Wichita Falls independent operators to carry." Wichita Falls, Texas, experienced a similar boom in the spring of 1919 and in the year following the discovery of oil the Wichita Off Repotrer quotes some statics which are truly amazing except to the big business men of the country. Here it is: "With the bars showing an increase in deposits from $9,678,269.04, at the close of 1918, to $37,622,342.12, or nearly four times the previous year's figures, and with resources of the local banks jumping from $12,855,065.44 to $43,175,843.05, the banking institutions of Wichita Falls have, thanks to the startling oil development of 1919, just closed the most wonderful year in the history of local banking, a year which has raised this city from near the foot of the list of near great banking centers to fourth place among the financial centers of Texas. Growth is Startling "To appreciate the full extent of this startling growth it must be considered that either of the two larger banks now surpass the combined totals in each of the above items for last year, and a third is at least within striking distance of the mark." "Increases in either items which Senate the strength and prosperity of banking institutions are equally as striking as the figures already given—clearings have jumped from a trifle over $50,000,000 to more than $200,000,000 for the first 40 weeks of the present year, and the capital, surplus and profits of the local banks have increased from $1,570,617.18 to $3,635,665.65." Three New Banks "In addition to the above increases, two have been added to the number of banking institutions here. One opening its door for business early in the year and the other in the latter part, while organization of a third is practically complete and ready to begin operations early in the coming year." "Oil, as mentioned before, is the SULPHUR CLEARS ROUGH, RED SKIN Pace, Neck and Arms Easily Made Smooth, Says Specialist" Any breaking out of the skin, ever sery, itching eczema, can be quickly overcome by applying a little Mentho Sulphur, declares a noted skin specialist. FORMER LOCAL WOMAN ASKS DIVORCE FROM MAN IN HOSPITAL An echo of both a criminal and a civil action here against Gottlieb Meger, rancher of Anaheim, against whom his granddaughter, Elsie Semrau, brought serious charges, was heard today when it became known that the man's wife, Mrs. Marie A. Meger, had filed suit for divorce against him in the Los Angeles courts. The wife's suit is based on the same charges that caused Meger's arrest about eight months ago. In addition, the wife recites that a child was born to the Semrau girl, and that Meger is the father. The Megers were married June 9, 1919, and separated ten days later when the wife learned of the asserted relations between the husband and granddaughter. Meger as a result of the criminal charges was sentenced to a year in the county jail. Due to impaired health he was removed to the county hospital, where it was stated today that it would be some weeks before he would be able to leave that institution. A civil action instituted by Miss Semrau for $30,000 damages from Meger was settled out of court here three months ago. Common garden sage brewed into a heavy tea, with sulphur and alcohol added, will turn gray, streaked and faded hair beautifully dark and luxuriant. Mixing the Sage Tea and Sulphur recipe at home, though, is troublesome. An easier way is to get the ready-to-use preparation improved by the addition of other ingredients—a large bottle, at little cost, at drug stores, known as "Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound," thus avoiding a lot of muzzles. While gray, faded hair is not sinful we all desire to retain our youthful appearance and attractiveness. By darkening your hair with Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound, no one can tell, because it does it so naturally; so evenly. You just dampen a sponge or soft brush with it and draw this through your hair, taking one small strand at a time; by morning all gray hairs have disappeared. After another application or two your hair becomes beautifully dark, glossy, soft and luxurious and you appear years younger. Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound is a delightful toilet requisite. It is not intended for the cure, mitigation or prevention of disease. —Advertisement Best Manner of Loading Barreled Apples in Car A good system of loading barreled apples provides even distribution of the strain on the barrels, which must also be stacked tightly enough to avoid shifting and breaking. The barrels should be arranged in such a manner that adequate ventilation will be afforded. The Bureau of Markets and Crop Estimates of the United States department of agriculture finds that the most poular and satisfactory method of loading is that known as the alternating straight load. This load is started by placing two rows of three barrels each, end to end, across the car, which leaves a space of about half the length of a barrel at the end of the rows. The second layer is then started by placing a row of three barrels on top of the first two rows, but starting from opposite side of the car, and covering the open space between the end of the bottom rows and the side of the car. The remainder of the car is loaded in the same way, alternate layers being started from opposite sides of the car. This forms channels along the walls lengthwise of the car which serve as flues for the circulation of air. When cars are shipped under refrigeration a load stacked in this manner will cool down quickly, or if a ventilated car is used, there is a free circulation of air through the car. An additional advantage is derived from this method because the bilge of one barrel does not rest directly upon the bilge of another, but in the hollow space over the ends of four barrels below it. Swift, Jr., eldest son of the millionaire Chicago packer, had been a little more expert horseman he might have led the talented daughter of Millionaire Mark Morton to the marriage altar. As a result of his shortcomings in the horsebreaking line he sees his younger brother, "Billy" Swift, carry off Helen Morton, and Louis must content himself with whatever consolation he is able to find in the fact that it is "all in the family." The romance had its beginning when Helen Morton, on a trip to the far west, bought a horse which had a reputation as an "outlaw." Fascinated by the animal's beauty—splendid coal black thoroughbred—she was still more fascinated by the gories she heard on every hand of the animal's intracliability and how no rider had ever been able to master it. She attempted to match her skill against the ugly temper of the fiery steed, at the risk of her life. After a half hour's furious struggling she succeeded in mounting to the saddle, but the next instant the maddened beast unseated her and flung her with terrific force over its head. No bones were broken, but she was so badly shaken up and bruised that she was confined to her bed several days. As soon as she was able to be about she returned to Chicago, taking Firefly with her. The untamed steed nearly killed one of the grooms before they got it loaded into its special car and it signalized the end of its long journey by planting a hoof in a stable boy's face, knocking him senseless. But at last, to the intense relief of everybody who had a hand in the matter, it was finally ensconced in the stables of the Morton estate at Wheaton, Ill. Miss Morton there let it be known it was of his own volition and not the result of any capricious whim on Firefly's part. He lost no time in insisting that Helen Morton make good her extraordinary promise. She did and their marriage followed quickly. The wedding ceremony was a very bizarre affair for everybody except young Louis Swift. Store Potatoes When Dry But Never in Deep Piles The object of storing any product is to preserve its quality during as long a period as may be necessary or possible in order to permit its disposal at the most advantageous time. Investigations by the Bureau of Plant Industry, United States department of agriculture, show that the temperature best suited to the proper preservation of potatoes is one ranging from 32 to 45 degrees. In regions where the powdery dry rot occurs a temperature of 33 to 36 degrees holds the disease in check better than a higher one. It is found best not to store potatoes in large piles when they are moist or covered with moist earth, as they quickly develop sufficient heat to injure the vitality of the tubers. If through unfavorable weather conditions it becomes necessary to store potatoes when they are wet and idry, they should be spread out in a thin layer until they have become dry, after which they may be piled up. It is not desirable to store potatoes to a greater depth than 6 feet. Potatoes intended for table use should always be stored in a darkened cellar or storage house. Exposure to light quickly injures the quality of the potato for food purposes. JAPAN TO CONTINUE ISLAND OCCUPATION WASHINGTON, Nov. 1—Japan has informed the United States that she is not ready to withdraw her military occupation of the northern half of Sakhalina Island off Siberia, the United Press was told in authoritative quarters today. When you hear a man continually addressing his wife by "pet" names, remember all the actors are not on the stage. so badly shaken up and bruised that she was confined to her bed several days. As soon as she was able to be about she returned to Chicago, taking Firefly with her. The untamed steed nearly killed one of the groomes before they got it loaded into its special car and it signalized the end of its long journey by planting a hoof in a stable boy's face, knocking him senseless. But at last, to the intense relief of everybody who had a hand in the matter, it was finally ensconced in the stables of the Morton estate at Wheaton, Ill. Miss Morton there let it be known that she would pay a big cash reward to the man who succeeded in riding Firefly, but without success. When possibilities had been exhausted there, Miss Morton turned her attention to the amateurs—to society friends of hers who were noted for their horsemanship. One of these was young Louis Swift. As he and Miss Morton stood in the Morton stables one day, admiring from a safe distance the good points of Firefly, she is said to have remarked, admiringly: "I believe I'd marry the man who could ride Firefly." "You really mean that?" was Louis Swift's answer. And when she replied that she did, he asked her to summon her grooms and order the horse saddled. After risking life and limb for a good half hour six husky stablemen succeeded in getting a bridle on Firefly's head and a saddle on his back. Another fifteen minutes of arduous effort saw Louis Swift mounted to the saddle. The exhausted grooms released their hold on the bridle and away dashed Firefly with the young millionaire clinging precariously on his back. But Firefly brought his mad dash to a sudden halt and swerved his powerful body with such a vicious jerk that Louis Swift was seated and hurled headlong to the ground. To the Morton home next day came his younger brother, Billy. To him Helen repeated the remark that had inspired Louis' ill-fated venture the day before. To her great surprise the young man showed himself quite as eager to try for this unusual reward as his brother had been. Although Billy Swift had never been considered Louis' equal as a horseman, he succeeded, to everybody's intense astonishment, where his brother had failed. For nearly an hour he clung to Firefly, racing the animal furiously up and down the bridle paths of the Morton estate until its rage was thoroughly spent. When Billy Swift finally dismounted BEEF CATTLE BENEFIT FARM; TURN DRY ROUGHAGE TO PROFIT The use of beef cattle in connection with general farming throughout the corn belt, says the United States department of agriculture, offers the following advantages: It is possible to make greater use of dry roughage produced on the farm, as beef cattle consume larger quantities of these feeds than any other class of live stock. Beef cattle can be used profitably on rough land unsuitable for crop production; also on low, wet land unsuitable for either crops or for other classes of stock. Beef cattle use the total production of grain and roughage on the average farm, without the purchase of other feeds, more efficiently than any other class of live stock. Beef cattle on the farm favor a well balanced distribution of labor throughout the year. They require very little attention during the summer and fall, when crops need attention, and during the winter and early spring, when there is little field work to be done, farmers can utilize their time to advantage by caring for the breeding herd, wintering the stockers and feeders, or fattening some steers. "Tommy," asked the teacher, "what a relief-map?" "Well, I dunno," said the future pupil, "but it looks like Willie Brown's map did when I had got through with it."
