He chased leaves and trees and his shadow and even his tail. Of course his man didn't why, but he tied a little iron to a string and Malty had a big trying- to pound on it as he ring it around. After they were all jugged down in bed Malty kept putting out into little exeited purrs every time he thought of the sport he coming. The kitten didn’t sleep late next morning. Not with a plan like that his little mind. He was out early, before the very birds, trotting across the grassy field with his tail out of the dew, singing a happy little song. He kept an eye out for mice, but nobody else seemed astir. He was almost to the marsh when saw the tops of some grasses waving. Instantly he crouched and went sleeping along with his fat, furry dummy rubbing along the ground. He thought he’d creep around whoever it was without being seen. But “whoever it was” saw something more than the grasses waving. It sat up; then he pricked first one ear and then the other; then he burst out laughing. It was the nice old rabbit who lived in the hollow log-Hey, Kitten,” he called. “I was just coming to meet you. I only stopped to nip a clover or two from this nice damp grass before those greedy bees suck all the honey out of them. I believe they’d work all night if they weren’t arraid of wetting their wings.” “But how did you know I was there?” asked Malty, ever so much FREIGHT SLASHES TO CONTINUE WORD FROM WASHINGTON WASHINGTON, June 30—Nearly 200,000 reductions in freight rates have been made by railroads in the last ten months in a campaign to stimulate business, according to reports received here today by the Association of Railway Executives. Wholesale slashes ranging from 10 to 50 per cent have and still are being made in an effort to equalize rates in all sections of the country, the reports show. The rate equalization campaign may be expected to continue for several months, officials said. The reductions are being made to cover basic commodities like grain and grain products, tin plate, hides, oils and lumber, shingles and other building materials, including brick, iron and steel, coal, livestock and meats, as well as fruits and vegetables in some cases. The rate reductions are intended to cover transcontinental as well as short hauls and to stimulate shipments of farm products and food, raw materials for manufacturing and construction work, with especial regard to the building of homes to relieve the nation-wide housing shortage. LUMSDON (Garage] for Northern Orange County at Anaheim, Cal. Drilling out the cement at 3700 and drilling on to 3865 the Placentia-Pacific Oil Company's Wents No. 1 has all the indications of being a nice well. Almost 200 feet of oil sand and oil bearing snale was drilled through the hole stopping at 3865 in hard shell. As soon as the hole is reamed down the 6 inch perforated set the well will be ready to bring in. Predictions run all the way from 300 to 800 barrels. It will be several days before a test on the production can be made. The Placentia Oil Company has succeeded in sidetracking all the lost drill pipe, and is ready to set a string of 8 inch on bottom at 2850. At this depth a nice showing of oil was struck and it will only be a short time now when the Placentia Oil Company will have a producer. The management are to be congratulated for the manner in which they staid with what looked like a hopeless job for many months. At Bradford No. 5 the Petroleum Development Company brought in a 800 barrel well at 4265 feet. The production is showing gradual increases and the well mak go to a 1000 barrel before the end of the week. Bradford No. 3 at 4350 is drilling in grey sand. Bradford Community No. 1 resumed drilling at 4368. Richfield-Yorba No. 2 stands cemented at 3082. The Petroleum Midway has completed the drilling of Krug No. 2 at 300 feet and is making preparations to put the well on production. It looks like a 350 or 400 barrel well. Drilling on Krug No. 1 is at 2335. Perhaps man's most pititable failure is his effort to pretend that he doesn't mind being wild... of the slacker lists began has justified the position of the American Legion and veterans of the world war in general in their desire to have the lists published. More than half of the 60000 names of draft deserters have been published according to information obtained by officials of the Legion. The unpublished names are being released at a rate that should complete their publication in the next five weeks. Of the approximately 500 deserters who have been apprehended about 200 have been tried and 80 convicted. Members of the American Legion have assisted in running down the deserters. Both Secretary Weeks and Adjutant General Harris have pointed out to American Legion officials that in addition to bringing hundreds of deserters to justice and branding thousands more the publication of the lists has cleared the service records of men who served or who had just cause for exemption but who failed to comply with some requirements of the selective service act and were there fore listed as deserters. MAIL SCHEDULES Arrival and departure of mails at the Anaheim postoffice are as follows: ARRIVALS 6:00 a.m., 10:40 a.m. 3:43 p.m., 5:40 p.m. DEPARTURES 6:15 a.m., 10:00 a.m. 3:15 p.m., 5:10 p.m. The Harrington-Dumas Oil Company's No. 1 is now one of the steadiest Richfield producers. The well is averaging 375 barrels a day. It is the first intention now to start drilling a second well soon. One of the signs of normalcy "For Rent."
