OIL PRODUCTION IN ORANGE COUNTY IN 1920 IMMENSE According to sworn statements filed by oil producers of the state with State Mineralogist Fletcher Hamilton, the production of net oil for 1920 increased 3,208,867 barrels over 1919. The figures which are compiled for taxation purposes in providing support of the Department of Petroleum and gas show that 103,154,724 barrels of oil and over 37 billion cubic feet of gas were produced in 1920 from an area of 94,567 proved acres. The amount for which the oil companies are assessed this year is $150,000,000, an increase of $22,661.43 over the assessment of last year. The rate of assessment per acre against oil land is $1,164,259 and the rate per barrel of oil or per 10,000 cubic feet of gas is $.00126255. Kern, Orange and Ventura counties were the principal contributors to the increased production and also increased the proved oil land of the state by 275 acres. Orange county produced 15,462,741 barrels from 617 producing wells from 4,466 proven acres, as compared with only 254,397 barrels in 1900. Since these figures have been compiled for 1920 the production in Orange county it is said is more than doubled. Orange county has been assigned a quota of $25,000 and Chapman has assumed responsibility for organizing this county for the fund raising campaign. The drive will start Monday. WILL SHOW HOW OIL IS LOCATED BY GEOLOGISTS Arrangements have just been completed by the Lessors' Oil company with Capt. W. D. Covington, consulting geologist, to give a public demonstration Sunday at 2 p.m. on the modern method of locating oil. This demonstration will be held on the location of well No. 1, one-half mile south of the Lincoln Highway on the Hansen road. The company announces that refreshments will be served and a good time for all is assured. The derrick for the first well to be drilled by the Lessors Oil company is now in progress of construction and the company is going ahead very rapidly with its drilling program, fully convinced that a large new field will be developed west of Anaheim and determined that they shall be among the first to develop this new field. PASSPORT NUISANCE MAKES MEN RAVE SAYS WRITER By CLYDE A. BEALS. LONDON (By Mail)—If there is anything that will bring out the latest foreign vocabularies of an American in Europe, it is the passport nuisance. LONDON (By Mail)—If there is anything that will bring out the latest foreign vocabularies of an American in Europe, it is the passport nuisance. There are now twenty-three countries, excluding Russia, to be encountered. Belgium has recently taken the lead in doing away with the visum for allied nationals. Prior to this step she was charging Americans $10, which many other countries are still doing in retaliation for the American visum charge. It is almost as if each state required passports visaed and charged ten dollars for each, except that the foreign traveller would be getting more for his money. With the present exchange in Austria and Hungary it costs more for the passport fee for a two or three day sojourn than the rest of the expense of the trip. From Vienna, I wanted to go to Budapest over Easter. The Hungarian visa cost 7760 kronen, and 500 more for the privilege of returning to Vienna. The visa charge was nominally ten dollars, but as always happens the exchange dropped, so that it actually was about twelve. Then the fare on the boat, an all-day trip on the Danube, was seven hundred kronen. And that visa is good for only one trip. If one wants to go back a week or so later the same 7760 kronen is exacted. But that is only half the fun. Before one can register at a hotel in Hungary one must register with the police. Then the police must be visited again for permission to leave the country. In Austria the traveller is allowed three days in which to register, but must likewise obtain permission to leave. Even in Italy, where one would think that thousands of years experience in government would have taught them better, the same regulations exist. And, the tourist himself is supposed to divine all these nuisances. In Rome the American consul has been thoughtful enough to have notices posted in the hotels where Americans are likely to stay. In other places an American blandly boards a train and then is pulled off at the frontier. Then is when the vocabulary comes out strongest. In Italy, where in point of holidays the old song about "Every Day'll be Sunday Bye and Bye" almost comes true, the passport nuisance is because of the laziness of the officials, particularly irritating. The traveller must register with the police in each city. If he is pressed for time, which an American always is, he does not enjoy delaying his sightseeing to make a first trip and deposit a slip bearing the usual expurgated parts of his life history then have to come... more people than any other form of investment. Special Bus Sun- In Italy, where in point of holidays the old song about "Every Day'll be Sunday Bye and Bye" almost comes true, the passport nuisance is, because of the laziness of the officials, particularly irritating. The traveller must register with the police in each city. If he is pressed for time, which an American always is, he does not enjoy delaying his sightseeing to make a first trip and deposit a slip bearing the usual expurgated parts of his life history, then have to come back in an hour or so, and then wait another half hour to complete this registration. Then it takes a day to get the passports prepared for leaving. I was in Ventimiglia, near the French border on the Riviera, arriving there on May 1st in spite of the messed-up train service. I wanted to leave Monday morning, but because Sunday had been Labor Day, the police bureau had taken a vacation from Saturday noon to Monday noon. Then after by trouble, the Italian guard on the border where I walked across didn't even bother to look at me, let alone my passport. If the vocabulary of the prospective American traveller is insufficient to meet the passport oscials, he will find it comforting to know this in several languages: "I didn't want to buy your darned country, I just wanted to rent it for a couple of days." DAKOTANS PICNIC Next Tuesday, June 28, the Dickey and Brown Counties Association, composed of former residents of North and South Dakota, will hold their tenth annual picnic in Orange county park, according to announcement made by President W. J. Elliott and Secretary J. B. Root. Members and all North and South Dakotans are invited and requested to bring their lunch baskets well filled and cups for coffee. Coffee will be served free by the committee. This will be an all day picnic and a good program has been arranged.
