JAPAN'S NEW SCHEME SYDNEY,(By Mall).—The commercial and businessmen of Japan are preparing a scheme for dumping Japanese manufactures into other countries, especially Australia, according to J.P.Suttor.commercial commissioner of the Far East for New South Wales. Leading Japanese bankers have expressed themselves as obliged to create some activity in regard to exports in order to meet the abnormal trade slump. The dumping scheme was therefore put forth, the Japanese government at the same time taking every precaution against the dumping of foreign goods into Japan. It will help to clear the situation when the job of making the world perfect begin where charity does. The first process of Americanization is to teach the immigrant to use a little water for non-beverage purposes. Washington sent it to the high school in the United States. Comment on Today's News By HENRY JAMES Washington sends out the information that the highest and lowest points in the United States are in California. Also that the deepest spot in the sea so far discovered is forty miles north of Mindanao in the Philippines. It is given as 32.088 feet. These facts are not so vital as some, but they are handy to have in mind when there are inquisitive persons about. A peculiar legal action of general interest is brought to fix responsibility for defective material in an automobile, and for the accident alleged to be due to defect. The wreck of a machine is ascribed to a rotten wheel, and the statement is made that the seller of the machine was aware of this condition and had covered it with paint. President Harding made an interesting and instructive address at Valley Forge Sunday. Surely the spot was an inspiration, and the head of a nation proud of the virile Americanism expressed so magnificently on that spot in revolutionary days, could not have failed to have answered to the thrill of it. Meanwhile the habit of lapping up poisonous combinations based on wood alcohol seems to flourish unchecked. The partner of Roy Gardner was glad enough to be captured because of his fear of the other and more hardened desperado. He says that Gardner had threatened to kill him in case the pair were retaken. Gardner apparently seeks to imitate Harry Tracy, the most notorious outlaw ever loose in the northwest. Tracy had a comrade in escaping from prison, but shot him as soon as they were outside on the theory that two would have less chance than one to evade pursuit. At this writing Gardner is said to be surrounded, the chances being that he is not. Attempts to scare the country by telling of the tremendous naval power being assembled by Japan continue. The reports come from a source that for years has sought to stir up war between the two countries, naturally are looked upon with distrust. This country is too big to be scared by Japan. It does not desire war, however, and has no reason to expect war unless this shall be due directly to criminal agitation. Flying through the Grand Canyon was an achievement requiring high courage and skill. Lieutenant Pearson of the army has a right to be proud of his exploit, and yet a hope prevails that he may have few imitators. He has shown what can be done rather than the necessity for doing it. SHOWS EARNING The Huntington Beach Water company operating in Huntington Beach, Orange county, reports to the railroad commission for the year 1925 that its operating revenue was $18,098.28; operating expenses $16,645.84 giving a net operating revenue of $1452.34. Miscellaneous non-operating revenue amounted to $818.92. Interest, rent and other deducting totaled $7.04. The net corporate income for the year was $1764.22. The deficit at the beginning of the year amounted to $2406.46. The accumulated deficit at the end of the year amounted to $732.24. Evidently the house is tired of accepting the direction of the senate. Instead of sustaining the Knox peace resolution it passed one of its own declaring the war with Germany at an end. There will be a conference over the two measures, and the outcome may be the slaughter of both. There never has been the slightest explanation made to the people of the country as to the necessity for procuring peace in any such fashion. If a separate peace is inevitable, it must be acknowledged by Americans as tinged with dishonor, so complete a reversal of sentiment on the part of congress would it be. A few months ago senators who now support the Knox resolution were declaring that a separate peace would be shameful. If that was the truth then, and so it seemed to most Americans to be, it is the truth now. But if such an arrangement must be made, when then not by treaty, as is customary between civilized nations? Perhaps Germany would be unfavorable to the resolution method, and decline to admit its validity, in which case the world would be treated to the peculiar spectacle of the United States at peace with Germany and Germany still at war with the United States. Pleas of guilty on the part of the Groves brothers, charged with conspiracy to violate the Volstead act, are said to have broken up plans to render the act in question wholly impotent in IN THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM.
