SANTA ANA The Barton Bedtime By JOHN BARTON (Copyright, 1921, by The Associated Newspaper) MALTY'S MAN MEETS THE KING Just imagine it. Here was the King of the Scales finishing the most wonderful fight you ever watched; he'd been in and out and under and around Malty Kitten's cabin after those two Evil Ones who wanted it for their own. You know they're the wicked snakes with the terrible bite they got from the gnome in the First-off Beginning. Nobody but the friendly snake can fight them, except a man with a gun. He'd just caught the second one and Thunderpaws the Skunk was thumping his feet while Malty was dancing the "kitten-hop" on the window sill and squalling like a whistle on New Year's eve. Then— The voice of Malty Kitten's man stopped everything right, short, off! Malty choked a yowl in the middle; Thunderpaws squatted under a bush; the King let go his coils from the Evil One's wicked wife, though he still held tight with his fighting teeth in case she needed more killing. None of them winked an eye. But the man saw them, for that grass wasn't nearly deep enough to hide in. He whistled. It was a queer low sound that made their ears prick. But sir." (He was himself as he you fellows coul I thought it well glad I've seen Malty Kitten to the King as So the big snakeful, throw a his head to no that was man always polite." "My but you the man. Eve was being admired handsome and 'You're pretty the man went my cat a thought he was ed up the kitten to the cabin, a paws making a snake. ITCHING ECZEMA DRIED RIGHT UP WITH SULPHUR Any breaking out of the skin, even ferry, itching eczema, can be quickly overcome by applying a little Mentho-Sulphur, says a noted skin specialist. Because of its germ destroying properties, this sulphur preparation instantly brings ease from skin irritation, soothes and heals the eczema right up and leaves the skin clear and smooth. It never fails to relieve the torment and disfigurement. Sufferers from skin trouble should get a little jar of Mentho-Sulphur from any good druggist and use it like a cold cream. Advertisement. He Surprised Thunderpaws Making Away With the Other Snake. he never took his liands out of his pockets or made a move toward anyone. "A King snake!" said he. "He knows you're a king, your majesty," purred Malty. He was so pleased that his man was a wise one. He was wise enough to know which snake to be afraid of—and it was the one the King was holding. In Bedtime Stories by JOHN BARTON by The Associated Newspapers MAN MEETS THE KING as the seeing the watch-chain in after it were the bible bite the First-friend accept a night the news the wait while men hop like Then—man off middle; the Evil still with None the man near lower back. But sir.” (He was really just nodding to himself as he talked). “I’ve heard you fellows could kill poison ones, but I thought it was all talk. Now I’m glad I’ve seen it with my own eyes.” Malty Kitten was jabbering it away to the King as fast as his man spoke. So the big snake laid down his mouthful, threw a sitting coil and raised his head to nod back. He thought that was man manners, and kings are always polite. “My but you’re a whopper!” said the man. Even the King knew he was being admired, so he was more handsome and dignified than ever. “You're pretty nice to have around,” the man went on, “so long as you leave my cat alone.” And the others thought he was joking. Then he picked up the kitten and opened the door to the cabin, and surprised Thunder-paws making away with the other snake. The man waistled again, for he began to have some idea of what had been going on. But he didn’t understand it all yet. “You must have been having your troubles, Kitten,” he said. “Well, let's eat and forget them.” Then he laughed, for Malty walked right under the window and began sniffing up at the tin of salmon he'd smelled through the window-pane. News Notes of the Oil Fields Striking an excellent oil sand carrying oil in quantity the Richfield-Giant set 8-inch pipe at 3930. The oil sand was struck at 3935 and the drilling continued to 2960. The showing proved something of a surprise as nothing like it was expected short of 4500 or 5000 feet. At 3240 the Richfield United Oil company's No. 1 is being cleaned out to go on production. It is thought DAMAGE CASE WAS AMICABLY SETTLED Trial of a civil action brought by Mrs. Anna M. French and her husband, Edgar P., both of Long Beach, against Mrs. C. B. Orchiltree and her son, John, for $32,650 damages growing out of an automobile accident, did not come up in department No. 2 of the superior court yesterday as was scheduled. The case has been settled out of court, it is understood, and the attorneys for the plaintiff have dismissed the action. FORMER ANAHEIM CITRUS MAN BUYS BIG GROVE PLACE J. E. Lemon, formerly an orange grower in this district has purchased the ten acre orange grove of Claude Stone known as "Stonehurst" located on Casitas avenue, Altadena. Mr. and Mrs. Lemon will make their home on the property. This grove has had very careful attention and is considered one of the best groves in the state. Mr. Stone has kept a systematic record of the production from each tree in the grove for a period of five years. From the trees showing the best results he has sold over 100,000 buds to the bud selection department of the Fruit Growers' Supply company, which is affiliated with the Southern California Fruit Growers' Exchange. The trees produced from such buds are called "pedigreed stock" and these buds from the Stone grove have been shipped to foreign countries and used locally for the betterment of the citrus industry. NOW, THEREFORE, The Board Trustees of the City of Anaheim ordain as follows: Section 1: A special election hereby called and ordered to be held in the City of Anaheim, State of California, on Tuesday, the 19th day of July, 1921, the object being to submit to the qualified electors of said city a proposition to incur a bonded debtness by the City of Anaheim the amount of Seventy-five Thousand ($75,000.00) Dollars for the purpose of the construction and completion of the City of Anaheim of the following municipal improvement, viz.: a building for municipal uses, containing fices for City Officials, a room chamber for the holding of meetings of the Board of Trustees and other officers, boards and tribunals of said City, rooms for the housing and keeping of prisoners of said City; be used for the purpose of a City Jail and rooms and quarters for the housing of fire apparatus of said City; be for the necessary accommodation for members of its fire department, to estimated cost of which improvement is Seventy-five Thousand ($75,000.00) Dollars in gold coin of the United States of America, said sum of Seventy-five Thousand ($75,000.00) Dollars being the amount of the principle of the indebtedness to be incurred therefor; the rate of interest to be paid on said indebtedness will be increased six per centum (6%) per annum, payable semi-annually; to principal and interest of said indemnity. Striking an excellent oil sand carrying oil in quantity the Richfield-Giant set 8-inch pipe at 3920. The oil sand was struck at 3935 and the drilling continued to 2960. The showing proved something of a surprise as nothing like it was expected short of 4500 or 5000 feet. At 3240 the Richfield United Oil company's No. 1 is being cleaned out to go on production. It is thought that the well will do around 300 barrels. Connections have been made with the Standard oil pipeline for the delivery of the oil. After standing for a month the Richfield Union Petroleum company opened its No. 1 today and the cement is being drilled out. A showing of oil struck at 3200 warrants that something good is not far off. At 3350 the Ridge Oil company's No. 1 drilling in brown shale is showing a little oil. The 8-inca was loosened and this is being carried on. The last work of the Petroleum Midway developing the Krug property necessitated the S-R-H Oil company to start No. 4 an offset well. The new well Wardman-Claxon No. 4 set 125 feet of stove pipe. W-C No. 2 is now drilling at 1300 feet in the shale. W-C No. 3 is building rig. It seems that the Standard Oil company can put a deep hole down in any field any time. Some work that is attracting attention is its deep Richfield wells. Vejar No. 1 is now at 4925, and Loftus and O'Bryan No. 1 shows 5045 feet of hole. Both wells are deep test holes and as yet are not showing anything but slight indications of oil. On the Kraemer No. 2 property No. 12 now drilling at 4100 will be the next producer. K-2-13 shows drilling at 3400, K-2-14 stands cemented at 2200, K-2-15 is drilling at 2300, and 2-16 is a new well just started and now drilling at 600. On the Kellogg lease No. 2 also a new well started drilling and is now 500 feet deep. Drilled to 4670 and satisfied that there is no oil there the Union Oil company is abandoning Shepard No. 1. On the Chapman property the Union has twelve wells underway, the intention being to put the development work right through. Chapman No. 5 in the oil sand at 4056 is redrilling at 3575. No. 10 cemented at 3030 is ready to drill out. No. 11 is drilling at 300; No. 12 stands cemented at 3155; No. 13 has the lumber on the ground; No. 14 is drilling at 700; Nos. 15 and 16 are rigged up; No. 18 is drilling at 1500; No. 19 at 875, and No. 20 is setting boilers. Thompson-Goodwin No. 2 drilling in the oil sand at 3450 looks like a nice well. No. 3 is building rig and the Fruit Growers' Supply company, which is affiliated with the Southern California Fruit Growers' Exchange. The trees produced from such buds are called "pedigreed stock" and these buds from the Stone grove have been shipped to foreign countries and used locally for the betterment of the citrus industry. On the Morse property No. 3 at 3028 stands cemented and will be the next producer. As soon as the hole at C. & B. No. 1 has been cleaned of drill pipe this well in the oil sand at 4032 will be ready for production. Stern No. 1 is in the oil sand, but is held because of drill pipe twist off. Stern No. 2 is making hole at 1700. Placentia Orchard is proving a hard proposition, the second well drilled to 1625 is help up with a fishing job. The United Oil company is back in the Richfield district and will develop its Carpenter property further. The development work of the Petroleum Midway (started) on the Krug property started something and it was necessary for the United to drill some offset wells. Grade work and rig building has started for Carpenter No. 2 Carpenter No. 1 drilled a year ago is still making 60 barrels per day. Drilling at Garden Grove on the Chaffee property is going right ahead, the Standard's well making hole now at close to a 1000 feet. The well is attracting lots of attention and the drilling is being watched with great interest. If oil is there the Standard Oil company will get it and give Southern California a new field. All available property has been leased up for three miles around the Standard well. At Garden Grove the Petroleum Midway has started drilling and the log of the well shows about 600 feet.
