The case of one Peggy Joyce, vamp of large accomplishment, assumes a real interest by the fact that she seems to have run foul of Uncle Sam. It appears that some of the fortune in Jewels that she had coaxed from one of the millionaire easy-marks were brought into this country without the formality of saying anything to the customs officials about it. A pleasing climax to the whole affair would be to observe the adventorous Peggy looking out through bars at a world that she long had regarded as her oyster, for really the poor millionaires need protection.
Berlin courts acquitted the young Armenian who had slain Talaat Pasha. The case was one in which sentiment and consideration of the decencies swept the statutes aside. Talaat was deliberately murdered, but he himself was an assassin a million times over, as due to him more than to anyone else was the slaughter of more than half of the Armenian people. Among the victims of his ferocity were the mother and sister of the young man who later met the bloody monster and killed him, whining for mercy, in his tracks. The act was not only justifiable, but highly meritorious.
Arrives now in good order the story that fish in large quantities have been leaping out of a Minnestoa river. When bass, sucker and cropples elect to leave their native element for a place in the sun, something is the matter. Probably with the correspondent, who may though untoward accident, have absorbed his own bait.
As is quite usual, reports from the scene of the race war prove to have been exaggerated as to the number of casualties. The principle that actuated the outbreak, is exactly the same as though one side had been exterminated. The doctrine of hatred is no safe guide.
It seems to be the design of soviet Russia to continue the policy of trying to keep Europe and the world in a turmoil. It is a singular thing if there is not statesmanship and patriotism of an order high enough to defeat the diplomacy of a venomous and verminous gang of cutthroat diplomats.
Damage by the Colorado floods has been so great that there is no possibility yet of making an estimate. Even the loss of life is not determined, and there is hardly a chance that it ever will be known in detail. With the accustomed energy of an American community, women been begun. A KITTEN MEETS A KING
By JOHN BARTON
(Copyright, 1921, by The Associated Newspapers)
MALTY KITTEN had been almost paralyzed with fright when he saw his dear friend Thunderpaws the Skunk sit up to greet King of the Scales. You can imagine how he felt when his own turn came to meet him.
As soon as the proper words had been spoken, the great snake sank back into his coils, turned his head to listen carefully, and lisped in his soft snake talk, "Now tell me exactly what's wrong." Just as if he'd known the furry-foot all his life.
And Thunderpaws sat down comfortably and explained, just as if he and the King had slept in the same hole. "It's the evil ones!" The King nodded, "Of course." "They're in this cabin behind me," the skunk went on. "And it belongs to Malty Kitten and his man. Of course they can't fight for themselves so I dared——"
"To call on me?" asked the King. "Quite right. But do I know the kitten?"
"I think not, sir," said Thunderpaws. Then he called, "Malty! Malty! Come and meet the King."
Poor-Malty. He tried his best to walk proudly as a cat should, but his little legs shook under him. His stick-up trembled at the tip-end. He stumbled over the skunk's wavy plume and snuggled close beside him.
"Sit up! Sit up!" whispered Thunderpaws. The King protended he wasn't listening, but Malty saw the corners of his wide snake mouth trying not to smile. So up he sat, with his little forepaws dropped, though he had to dean against the skunk to keep from tumbling. When the King's head dipped toward him he closed his eyes; then the tip of a little pink toe-pad felt the light stroke of the forked snake tongue.
"I see all three of us hunt the fur from underground," lisped the King's gentle voice.
Malty opened his eyes again. He knew folks who hunt the same game don't hunt each other. It was a police way of saying the King didn't hunt kittens. Oh, you learn to be very clever when you're a King. "Yes, Your Highness!" mewed Malty. He was beginning to feel quite the bold kitten again now that hed got over wanting to run away.
The Great Snake Turned His Head to Listen Carefully.
"Now tell me," the King said sociably, "where do they get in? Is there room to turn around and dodge in? Are there any other holes to be watched? Show me!"
So Malty described the cat's hole in the cabin wall, and the rat's hole under the floor, where the wicked snakes hid in the deep down dark so no one could follow them. And the King listened.

PURPOSE
The stripped tree rises, gaunt and tall,
The dead leaves flutter and fly and fall,
The earth to warm and with richness dower.
The leaves are dead, but there springs a flower,
Forth from the warmed earth's breast.
The hero lies, dumb, cold and dead
But the hero's deeds, like the leaves are spread.
Some soul inspired by their subtle power
To grander deeds, bears a grander flower,
And the hero's death was best.
JACKSON IS AGAIN AMONG THE MISSING
Mike Jackson is out again. He was arrested on the Irvin ranch several weeks ago, by Sheriff C. E. Jackson, (who denies any relationship with his prisoner) on an insanity charge.
Jackson was living in a cave, and leading more or less of a primeval existence. He was reported for several small thefts, and after an examination, was pronounced insane, and committed to the state hospital at Norwalk.
Word received here today declares that he has been missing since June 5.
NEWPORT VOTERS VOTE IMPROVEMENT
The voters of Newport and Balboa Beach have authorized the building of a public pier on the site of the old one. The bonds carried by the vote of 55 for and 41 against the measure.
The dredging proposition carried by a vote of 16 against 41.
The pier is to be 818 feet in length. It will be 20 feet wide and 15 feet above the water. It will be built on creosoted pilings calculated to stand the impact of the waves better than concrete, and which will have no iron reinforcing to rust or rack.
The second proposition adopted by the voters yesterday, authorized the removal of the mud bar between the
SAGE TEA TURNS
GRAY HAIR DARK
It's Grandmother's Recipe to Bring Back Color and Lustre to Hair.
That beautiful, even shade of dark, glossy hair can only be had by brewing a mixture of Sage Tea and Sulphur. Your hair is your charm. It makes or mars the face. When it fades, turns gray or streaked, just an application or two of Sage and Sulphur enhances its appearance a hundredfold.
Don't bother to prepare the mixture; you can get this famous old recipe improved by the addition of other ingredients at a small cost, all ready for use. It is called Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Compound. This can always be depended upon to bring back the natural color and lustre of your hair.
Everybody uses "Wyeth's" Sage and Sulphur Compound now because it darkens so naturally and evenly that nobody can tell it has been applied. You simply dampen a sponge or soft brush with it and draw this through the hair, taking one small strand at a time; by morning the gray hair has disappeared, and after another application it becomes beautifully dark and appears glossy and lustrous. This ready-to-use preparation is a delightful toilet requisite for those who desire dark hair and a youthful appearance. It is not intended for the cure, mitigation or prevention of disease.
