Testimony of a Chicago thug that he was hired to beat up non-union laborers lacks the importance that then seems a tendency to ascribe to it. In the first place the word of such a ruthen would not be entitled to credence in the second place; if all that he says is true, it easily be watched by the record of thuggism made by capital in its fights upon labor. Emphasis on these matters tend to divert attention from the real issue which has to do with the rights of both labor and capital, not to hire thugs, but to be treated honestly and fairly in their economic relations.
The peace resolution of Knox has hit a snag in the Senate. It is impossible for the public to worry much about the snag, even if it prove fatal to the resolution. There may be some diplomatic necessity for the passage of the measure, but nevertheless it cannot escape being regarded as dishonorable, and a wanton affront to the allies. The snag is in the form of an amendment stipulating that the resolution is not to be construed as affecting the rights of our allies under the terms of the treaty of Versailles." Knox is said to object to the amendment, a circumstance that tends to bring his resolution into deeper disrepute.

WIFE KILLS HUBBY BECAUSE HE HAD DISGRAGED HER?
CHICAGO, May 2—Discovery of a blackmail plot by Dr. Thomas J. Rowland was the cause of his murder here in his home early today, according to Detective Sergeant Edward Weber.
Police rushed the Rowland apartment when cries of Mrs. Rowland were heard. Dr. Rowland was found fully dressed on the floor with a bullet in his chest. His wife barricaded herself in her rooms.
Police who broke down the door found her hysterical. The doctor was taken to a hospital where he died. Before death he issued a statement accusing his wife of the murder:
Mrs. Rowland was taken to jail. Detective Weber went to Dr. Rowland's room in the Masonic Temple, where he broke the doctor's desk. In it he found a receipt for $100 from the Soul Detective Agency.
Edward Early, assistant manager of the agency, said Dr. Rowland had Mrs. Rowland shadowed since March 1.
"Dr. Rowland told me he had improper relations with a young girl in the apartment building," said Early. The mother and the girl demanded $2500 from him as the price of silence. He refused to pay. Then they carried their story to Rowland's wife. She became alarmed, not wanting her husband's double life exposed. She demanded that the $2500 be paid. Dr.

Mrs. Rowland shadowed since March 1.

Then they carried their story to Rowland's wife. She became alarmed, not wanting her husband's double life exposed. She demanded that the $2500 be paid. Dr. Rowland thought she was "in" on the blackmail plot and had her shadowed."
Early and Detective Weber agreed that they were of the opinion that Mrs. Rowland shot her husband when he refused to pay out the $2500 to save both of them from disgrace.
One of two things is certain: Either the treaty terms are too drastic, or the licking administered wasn't drastic enough.
