The test is the first step in competition for Merit Scholarships provided by some 90 corporations, foundations, and professional societies, as well as by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation it self. Fifteen million dollars in Merit Scholarships have been awarded during the first four years of the program. At the present time 2300 merit scholars are attending 252 private and 91 tax-supported colleges offering abundant proof that talent is not confined by geographical boundaries or economic status. The students are representative of all areas of the United States and are the children of teachers, lawyers, mail carriers, auto mechanics, carpenters, barbers, physicians, a golf pro, a tavern owner, and a tug boat captain, among more than 180 parental occupations. Last month, in the 1958-59 program, 750 winners and 100 Honorary Merit Scholars were announced and Certificates of Merit were awarded to the 10,000 finalists in recognition of outstanding performance. Participating schools are provided with a complete distribution of scores in their own state permitting counselors to make meaningful comparisons.
