HANDEL The tremendous job being done in the Anaheim Union High School District by the various Physical Education Departments is well known in Southern California. However, while the work being done for the boys in both athletics and physical education has received a great deal of praise, another group has also been doing a fine job namely: the girls physical education departments. Thanks to the interest of those in the Department, the girls have a program which affords an opportunity to build a strong body, a prime requisite for an alert mind. Helping to attain this goal are Girl's Physical Education leaders, Jo Derigo at Anaheim High School and Lura Wubben at Western High School; Katherine Malucky, Brookhurst; Mildred Starke, Fremont; Shirley Lapler, Orangeview; and Barbara Covarrubias, Trinity Junior High Schools, with the help of an efficient physical education staff in their respective schools. All Are Experts These women all experts their field are doing a tremendous job of conducting a program which is rapidly becoming one of Southland's best. In discussing a Physical Education Program in the Girls' Department, one may ask the alms methods taken to receive goals. In answer, the High School trict reports their aim is to enrich and maintain a learning station for all girls. Because of this, it is necessary to maintain a program which will meet the needs of all girls in the High School District. To accomplish this, a wide range of activities are planned so that the highly skilled student may develop to her fullest potential and in contrast, the person who needs a modified or adaptive program has the opportunity to develop and improve physically and emotionally to her individual capacity and ability. It is certain that when a girl is assigned to a specific level such as GAA, regular Physical Education, modified or adaptive that regardless of her abilities her needs are being satisfied. This is just as true for the girl in the adaptive program who learns to correct a deficiency, as it is for the one who improves her tennis game over a given peak. Local Program The Girls Physical Education Program of the Anaheim Union High School District includes the following activities: 1. Team Sports: Which give the girls an opportunity to play with a group where they have a chance to play with those who are more skilled. Team sports include basketball, hockey, volleyball, softball, speed-a-way and cage ball. 2. Individual Sports: In individual sports each girl not only works with a group, but participates as an individual and develops skills of her own. Individual sports include tennis, badminton, swimming, dance, golf, and archery. These are doubly effective because they have a carry-over value for after school years. 3. Recreational Games: These are much like individual sports in that they offer the student individual competition so necessary for a feeling of achievement. Recreational games increase student competence in a greater variety of physical activities which are suited fully in the classroom and playing field, they become very fixed as everyday happen. "Personal Health and Guidance" is a course given at the seventh and 10th Grade levels. A Health survey is made and filed on each girl as she enters the 10th grade. 7. Selective subjects: Drill team and Girls' Athletic Association are open to girls meeting the requirements for entrance. The GAA, in a "Statement of Philosophy" reports that their group, "strongly endorses wholesome sports programs for girls under trained leadership in schools and recreation groups." Sports programs for girls should be "promoted to the extent that outcomes are in the best interests of the individual and the American Way of Life", thus: Hurst Jewelers 132 W.
