DIVIDER DEFINES — A half-wall with ample storage space is a practical way to divide an open area which serves as a combination living-dining room. Cabinets on the side wall and shelves in the divider provide plenty of storage space for dishes, silverware, records, books and other items. The walls, ceilings and cabinets in this dual-purpose room are covered with Marlite and can be given an occasional damp-wiping because of its plastic surface. Predecorated hardboard in a handsome wood grain, used on the cabinets and divider, accents the pastel colors on the walls and ceiling. Marlite never needs painting or refinishing. Divider Reflects Modern Trend Modern designers have found that a low divider or storage wall will effectively define the various areas in a large open-floor plan, and many craftsmen have used the same technique in both old and new areas. Another way to accent the room's decor is to panel the partial divider in a contrasting color or pattern, so it will be a dominant part of the area. Useful in both small and large sizes, the perforated panels at once decorate and functionalize the space occupied. Metal fixtures, instantly removable, implement the panels by making it possible to display or store any small household items. The use of the panels and fixtures is limited only by the home-maker's imagination. Some representative uses for Peg-Board panels are listed below as a guide to home owners and their families: Sliding doors in overhead kitchen cabinets. The ¼" thick panels without wood reinforcement may be used for this purpose if the door height is 12" or under. Use the ¼" panels, for taller doors. Liners of kitchen cabinet doors. Slide-out vertical dividers in base cabinets. Liners for closet doors. Interiors of closet doors. Accent panels in the living room or recreation room for hanging Divider Reflects Modern Trend Modern designers have found that a low divider or storage wall will effectively define the various areas in a large open-floor plan, and many craftsmen have used the same technique in both old and new homes. Partial dividers are especially effective in family rooms, kitchens with separate food preparation and dining areas, and combination living and dining rooms. Dividers can be included in the original design, or added as needed. Most dividers have drawers or shelves for additional storage space, which provides "bonus" storage for hobbies or books. Many homemakers prefer a "split" decor in dual-purpose rooms to further emphasize the areas. Another way to accent the room's decor is to panel the partial divider in a contrasting color or pattern, so it will be a dominant part of the area. A versatile material used extensively for paneling "divided" rooms is Marlite, which is available at lumber yards in plain colors, woodgrains and marble patterns. The plastic-finished paneling comes in large sheets and 16 inch by eight foot planks and 16 inch square blocks. The planks and blocks come in ten "companion colors" which can be arranged in a variety of interesting ways to define individual areas. Large Marlite panels make attractive and serviceable surfaces for low dividers and built-in cabinets. Covering walls, ceilings and dividers with this predecorated hardboard assures a coordinated and practical decor. The panelling's plastic surface wipes clean with a damp cloth, and it never requires refinishing. R. JOE QUAST and SONS PLUMBING and REPAIR KE 5-2506 308 N. LOS ANGELES ST. GIVE MOTHER A PATIO! GENUINE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 315 West Ninth Street Now that summer weather is here, there is taking place a generalized exodus of homeowners from house to back yard. All over the country — California to Maine—a veritable procession of determined-looking men and women streams out the back door lugging spades and hoes and trundling wheelbarrows in front of them. Joining this green-thumbed group is another jolly band also migrating to the back yard, but these carry hammers and saws, paint buckets and brushes. It's not hard to guess the purposes of these two sects; the first is bent on improving and embellishing his home with varied flora, the second aims to protect the fruits of his labor with a sturdy fence. As well as attempting to deter the wanderings of friendly canines and curious children, the fence builders also have in mind providing a handsome backdrop for their cherished shrubbery and blooms. And homeowners are learning that there's no more attractive complement to their home than a beautifully designed, well constructed fence. Riding high as favorites throughout the country are tall, dimensional fences built of rich, rugged woods like western red cedar and Douglas fir, and the popular patterns are designed to exploit the natural beauties of these woods. One pattern gaining much attention for its individual attractiveness, as well as its ability to blend with and complement various architectural styles, is the board-on-board. This is constructed with alternating boards nailed on oppo GOOD BOUNDARY MARKER — A good many problems can be solved the most economical, and space-saving means of setting off properly western red cedar is not to be denied. KE 5-4824 Riding high as favorites throughout the country are tall, dimensional fences built of rich, rugged woods like western red cedar and Douglas fir, and the popular patterns are designed to exploit the natural beauties of these woods. One pattern gaining much attention for its individual attractiveness, as well as its ability to blend with and complement various architectural styles, is the board-on-board. This is constructed with alternating boards nailed on opposite sides of the fence frame, which results in interesting shadow patterns and a dimensional look. Boards are usually either 1x8 or 1x12 inch cedar or fir. To keep the setting as native as possible, homeowners prefer using rough-sawn boards and either straining them to capture the natural coloring of the wood used or allowing the fence to weather naturally to a striking, silvery gray. Both the natural wood color and the weathered hue provide an excellent foil for greenery and flowers. In cases of a sloping lot, board-on-board fences can be designed in sections which step down the slope of the yard, and, oftentimes, a stepped-down fence is built as a means of giving eye-interest to perfectly straight property lines. But no matter what style is selected for the fence, those homeowners who are putting them up now have the right idea, for the rain-softened soil of May and early June makes setting of fence posts a relatively easy task.
