Ambling With Ann

HOLLYWOOD — Susan Hayward (or Suzy, depending on the degree of friendship) reckons she's a sho'nuff Southern gal since taking up permanent residence in Carrollton, Ga., a couple of years ago when she wedded Eaton Chalkley, despite her being Brooklyn born and bred.
Suzy met Eaton: "through mutual friends. I was at the home of sportswriter Vincent Flaherty. Vince and my husband were old school chums."
How does Suzy manage the dual roles of Mrs. Eaton Chalkley and Susan Hayward? "Back home," she draws, "Ah'm jis' a Joaja housewife. Here, I'm an actress—and I like being both."
The Hollywood Suzy, as all her fellow workers will testify, is strictly the business woman. She goes about her work with the same application as any skilled craftsman. Her punctuality is a by-word when she's working, and 'tis claimed—though this probably is a partionable exaggeration—that one can set his watch by her arrival. Says Susan: "Acting is a business, and should be conducted in a business-like manner.
"On the farm, I wear jeans for riding. We ride a lot, fish and hunt.
In fact, life in Georgia is almost a perpetual vacation; why go where when we have everything our door?"
When it comes to food, she no special preferences, no fads, diet problems. Breakfast is "ally standing up while dresses and is a large glass of fruit juice plus coffee. Lunch on a workday—rare roast beef, two or three vegetables, salad, hot roll and ice cream. Desserts don't interest me.
The Chalkleys live in "no space." When we built, we want a plantation-type house would be a white elephant out of an army of servants. Our features many large picture windows and is built of Georgia granite. The kitchen, my pride and has all the latest electrical guts, and I cook at least twice a week."
Natalie Wood emotes with Jake Garner in "Cash McCall." Alan Ladd's 16-year-old daughter Alana makes her flicker debate her Pa's new film, "Guns of Timberland." Shirley Laine and Jack Lemmon will star honors in "The Apartmme This wouldn't miss.
"The Young Philadelphians an exceptionally fine picture, wise and production-wise. They ly miscast was Alexis Smith. We she tried for emotion, it brook snickers from the audience, the scene was mercifully brief."

UPI Hollywood Correspondent
HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—Jack Linkletter, loping along confidently in father Art's footsteps, takes another shot at his own TV show next week with a road company "Wide, Wide World."
After failing to set the world afire in his first outing—a quiz program horribly titled "Hagis-Bagis"—21-year-old Jack is launching "On The Go," a five-day-a-week morning show aimed at housewives.
This time Jack believes he's found the right formula.
"We will travel around the country doing interviews, seeing special events and places of interest," he said.
Until the handsome youth graduates from the University of Southern California (as an English major) this June, the shows will be limited to the Southern California area.
Plan To Tape Shows
In the interests of economy and time, the new program will be recorded on video tape and rushed back to Hollywood for editing before it hits the televaves.
"I was frightened when I first heard we'd be on so early in the morning (9 a.m. p.d.t.). I thought

we'd lose all Jack Paar's viewers who still would be asleep," Jack said, with his father's easy grin.
"But Gary Moore had an early spot and did very well. We think it will attract housewives who have just rushed their children and husband out of the house and who pause have a cup of coffee before starting the day's chore.
"So far we've been to Las Vegas, a dude ranch, a swimming school for infants, Marineland and other nearby places, accumulating a backlog.
International Trip Planned
Once I'm through with school we'll be able to travel throughout the country, giving home-based women a chance to see unusual places. We plan to charter a plane for an eight-day trip around the world-hitting the eight biggest cities, among others."
According to Jack, "On The Go" will be a video magazine, made up of several different and contrasting segments.
If a viewer doesn't particularly like a man-on-the-street interview, she needn't turn off the set. Something else will come along within the next few minutes that she might like very much.
A big man, like his father, Jack has much of his papy's poise and assurance. He gives Art full credit for these virtues.

How does South find out which finesse to take?
Cannot Be Sure
South cannot be sure that he will get an absolute count, but he can lose nothing by trying.
Declarer plays low from dummy at the first trick, and East wins with the king. East returns the seven of clubs, and South plays the nine. West is allowed to hold the trick with the ten of clubs.
West leads another club, and East discards a heart. We now have a count on the clubs. South gets to his hand with the ace of diamonds and leads a low heart.
West follows with a low heart, and declarer finishes dummy’s ten. He doesn’t expect to win this finesse; he merely wants to duck the trick to East.
East wins with the jack of hearts and returns the queen of hearts. Declarer takes the king and ace of hearts, noting that West discards a club on the third round of hearts. We now have a count on hearts as well as clubs.
South now leads a low shade and fineshes the ten, losing to East. East returns a spade, and South takes the king and ace. West discards his last club on the third spade.
Now the count is complete. West’s three remaining cards must be diamonds. There is no problem about how to play the diamonds — thanks to the count.

South now leads a low grade and finishes the ten, losing to East. East returns a spade, and South takes the king and ace. West discards his last club on the third spade.
Now the count is complete. West's three remaining cards must be diamonds. There is no problem about how to play the diamonds — thanks to the count.
Daily Question
Partner opens with two notrump, and the next player passes. You hold: Spades K 10 4 Hearts K 10 4 Diamonds Q 9 8 5 Clubs A 26 8.
What do you say?
Answer: Bid six notrump. Partner should have 22 to 24 points, and your 12 points will make the total 34 to 36 points. This is enough for a small slam but not enough for a grand slam. Don't conduct a complicated auction when you know just where you want to end.
