Record Number Shown For Miss Universe Event Preparation for the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant, to be held in Long Beach Municipal Auditorium, July 18 through 25, moves into high gear with announcement by Executive Producer Oscar Meinhardt that a record entry of beauties from all parts of the world would be on hand this year. The producer of this international beauty spectacle declared that no less than 84 contestants, including some from the Far East, would be represented at the 1959 international beauty spectacle. Recognized and honored for its contributions to world peace and friendly understanding between nations, the Pageant will attract outstanding young beauties from approximately 37 different nations including glamourous lassies representing 47 of the 50 United States (including Alaska.) Miss Hawaii, of course, will be on hand, but only as a territorial candidate, as Hawaii's statehood has not been ratified as yet by its own local government. The 1959 Miss Universe Pageant is a far cry from the first, held in 1952, when only 25 nations competed. Unusual global interest was focused on Long Beach two years ago, when Miss Israel and Miss Germany posed together for international newspaper and newsreel photographers. Again in 1958, Miss Poland, flying out from behind the Iron Curtain, caused a stir. This year, lovely young women from the United Arab Republic, Syria, Iran, as well as from Germany, Israel and Poland, will live side-by-side in perfect harmony in Long Beach's Lafayette Co-sponsors of the Pageant are the City of Long Beach, Catalina Swim Suits and Max Factor Hollywood. Prizes totalling more than $150,000 are in store for the lucky winning contestant. Starting on Thursday, July 16, when the candidates will arrive at the Long Beach Municipal Airport, to be welcomed by 19-year-old Luz Marina Zuluaga, Miss Universe 1959; the press, pageant officials, city fathers and their hostess - chaperones, the charming candidates are in for a steady, 10-day round of warm California hospitality, including luncheons, dinners, beach and swimming parties, the famed Miss Universe Pageant Parade, four nights of nerve-tingling, ending with the Grand Coronation Ball, to be held Saturday night, July 25, at the Lafayette Hotel. The contest proper, staged as a lavish theatrical presentation, will be held in the 6000-seat Long Beach Municipal Auditorium, before the usual capacity audience and a panel of nine judges, headed by Vincent Trotta, internationally-known dean of beauty. Music will be supplied by Manny Harmon's Miss Universe Pageant Orchestra, and as last year, Hollywood's Byron Palmer, famed state, film and television star, will preside as Master of Ceremonies. Two climaxes of the Pageant will be the selection of Miss United States on Wednesday night, July 22, and the selection and crowning of Miss Universe on Friday night, July 24 when Miss night, July 24 when Miss Universe royal robes, sceptre and crown to the New Queen. As before, the heart - warming story of the Miss Universe Pageant will be the most completely covered news event of the year with scores of top-ranking news paper and magazine writers, photographers, newsreel and television cameramen and radio news casters from the local, national and international press on hand to record the events. According to Executive Producer Meinhardt, many individual beauty contests have already been completed in the United States and throughout the world, while others are still in progress. "I am proud to say that the Miss Universe Pageants have brought fame, fortune and happiness to so many beautiful and talented young women," said Meinhardt, "but I am proud still that the Pageants have been instrumental in promoting the 'Good Neighbor Policy' on a global basis. There is no question but that better understanding between nations and people have been brought about through the hundreds of charming, intelligent contestants of every known nationality, who have met in Long Beach to live together and to compete in friendship for the coveted Miss Universe title."
