I'll Handel This

Word that Montebello's Rhinos may return to the Orange County area has brought about as much interest as a hot tip on yesterday's races.
It goes without saying that when this club was in the area previously they did not exactly set the world on fire.
In fact at many times there were more people on the field than there were in the stands.
It is rather confusing to figure just what the Rhinos hope to accomplish in this venture.
When the crew left the La Palma Stadium home site it was stated that Orange County would not ever be a sports center.
If this be true, and we strongly are in disagreement to this statement, then it is even more difficult to understand why the club would come back for another defeat at the gate.
A real odd deal here is that the head man of the proposed move, Dick Arbenz, was the guy who made the remark that Orange County would not be a sports area.
No matter how they look at it, the Rhinos must understand a number of things.
If the club was at all successful in Montebello they would never have thought of moving.
Going back a bit, in fact, had they been able to draw in Orange County, they would not have made the move to their present site.
Arbenz reports that the Rhinos are planning on playing in Santa Ana's Municipal Bowl if and when they make the move.
Yet, regardless of whether they compete at La Palma or the Santa Ana site, they will still be faced with these problems.
It is doubtful that the Rhinos can meet the competition of professional college, junior college and high school football.
Regardless of where they play, the team is still going to have to fight for the fan dollar with too many formidable foes.
At one point when the forces in question were planning on leaving Anaheim, it was stated that Orange County would support nothing but high school or junior college athletics.
For this reason it is additionally confusing as to why the club would want to move again.
Supposedly the Rhinos had found a home in Montebello.
They were reportedly welcomed with open arms by the civic leaders who thought it would be a real good deal to see this team represent their city.
Yet, here it is not even one year later and the club is planning another shift.
These Rhinos have been moving around faster than a jet bomber.

These Rhinos have been moving around faster than a jet bomber from one city to another and it is doubtful that a shift to Santa Ana would be any more lucrative.
While this space has always attempted to adopt a positive attitude, a line must be drawn somewhere and this is the best spot in which to do it.
Let's face it.
Friend fan just has too many attractions for his dollar and when comes Saturday afternoon it does not seem logical that he will attend a game when he can see a better one on television.
In short, it is our belief that the Orange County Venture of the Rhinos, while interesting, does not appear to be destined for success.
The results should be interesting.
WEST ANAHEIM LITTLE LOOPERS
West Anaheim Little League fans are looking forward to a highly successful season, one which should produce some good games before the year has run its course.
Last season the group turned in a season which allowed a large number of boys to participate in the program, which was a good deal for all concerned.
We wish them luck.
TENNIS NOTE
The Anaheim Tennis Club is looking back on a tremendous closed tournament which saw some of the best netters in the local area taking part.
This affair has brought forth some great names in the sport and the chances are good that such will be the case again.
Local racquetmen are hoping that this affair will grow with every season.
Chances are very good that this will happen, too.
WRESTLING WORD
Understand that the proposed wrestling league for Orange County High Schools is going down for the third time.
So much interest was aroused that each of the three local circuits, Sunset, Freeway and Orange, may form their own.
Sports are looking up.
We couldn't be happier, either.
Southpaw Gene Snyder Makes Mound Debut in Dodger Fray
CINCINNATI (UPI) — Southpaw Gene Snyder makes his major league debut today when the Los Angeles Dodgers attempt to even the score with Cincinnati.
A crew-cut, roundhouse curve artist, Snyder will oppose former Dodger Don Newcombe or fellow yearling Jim O'Toole for the Reds.
Los Angeles failed to take up any slack Friday on league-leading Milwaukee—which lost to San Francisco—when the Dodgers dropped a 5-3 decision to the Reds.

Powerful Local Tracksters
Win Sunset Loop Crown
SANTA ANA — A razor sharp Anaheim Colonist track squad, putting forth their best effort of its or any recent season, roared to a highly impressive victory in the Sunset League Track and Field finals at Santa Ana College yesterday.
The triumph was Anaheim's first since 1941 and was greeted with a standing ovation from the large turnout of local fans in attendance.
Coach Bob Hager's charges started early and finished late as they showed their superiority in many events both in the track and field departments.
The Colony ran up a total score of 62 4-5 points which greatly outstanded their nearest rival, Fulerton, which could only acquire 3 1-5.
Anaheim started to show what was in store for their opponents with the running of the 100-yard dash as Bob McPhillips and Bill Smith both charged to a one-two finish.
McPhillips turned the distance in 10-seconds flat, which was one of the best marks in the meet.
Colonyville then hit again in the 220, when Smith, McPhillips and George Bragg ran to a one-two-three finish.
Smith, who has just about taken out an option in the sprint events, covered the distance in 22.
Another Win
The local cinder powerhouse then cracked through for a win in the 440 as Bragg took the win.
He was followed across the finish line by Gerry Woodward, who almost caught him for the victory.
It was a great race for both men in the time of 51.6.
Newport Harbor's Bob Van Sickle snared the 880 in 1:57.1, but here Shepherd, of Anaheim, took place money.
A highlight of the meet was the high jumping of Denis Vollom, who fought it out with Santa Ana's Bob Soldan.
However, Denis snared the meet with a leap of six-foot-one-inch. A pleasant surprise in this event was the work of Ron Burt of Anaheim, who took a third.
Mickey Castricone, who has been improving steadily since the start of the season, snared a third in the high jump, while Dan Shepard, a fine pole vaulter tied with Gary Dow and Don Jacquez, all of Anaheim for fourth.
Also knotted for the spot was Guzman of Fullerton.
Relax Win
The crack Anaheim relay team composed of McPhillips, Woodward, Bragg and Smith won in easy fashion as they cruised to a time of 1:30.9.
Bill Crain, who is rated as one of the better milers in the County, finished third with his best time 4:35.
It took a new League record to defeat him as Fullerton's LeRoy Neal toured the distance in 4:25.2.
The old mark was 4:27.9.
It was LeRoy's brother, Grady, who held the old mark.
It was a tremendous victory for the Colonists, one which will be long remembered in the local sports scene.

Monarch Nine Loses Decision to Pomona
By BOB LUSKEY
Mater Del's hopes for an undisputed Parochial League baseball championship were given a kingsized set back yesterday afternoon when second place Pomona Catholic nudged the Monarchs 1 to 0 in a heartbreaking pitching dual on the winners' diamond.
Going into yesterday's title fray the Monarchs were leading the runner-up Spartans by a game and a half with an 8 and 2 won-loss mark. However, the loss dropped the locals' reading to 8 wins in 11 outings and increased the Pomona mark to 7 and 3.
Mater Del has only one more game remaining on its schedule, that being with last place St. Francis next Tuesday at Memorial Park in Santa Ana and should the Monarchs come through with a win in that one they could do no worse than tie for the title.
Pomona on the other hand has two more league games and both with formidable opponents. The Spartans must meet third place Mary Star of the Sea Monday afternoon at San Pedro and then take on fourth place St. Paul's at the latters' Santa Fe Springs Diamond. Neither the Stars nor Swordmen have lost home games this season.
Flip of Coin
Should the league end in a two way tie for the pennant between the Monarchs and Spartans then there would most likely be a flip of the coin to decide which squad would represent the Parochial League in the upcoming CIF AA Playoffs. There is also an outside chance that both teams might enter.
As for yesterday's thriller, losing Monarch chucker Bill Huarte pitched a fine game for the visiting Orange Countians, but was the victim of a poor hitting attack put on by his teammates.
The Monarchs managed only five hits off winning chucker Bill Stallard while Huarte was also limiting the Spartans to five singles.
Goes All The Way
In going all the way, Huarte struck out three and walked three while his pitching adversaries also whiffed three but walked none.
Actually, it was a walk that killed the Monarchs. In the bottom of the fourth inning with the score tied at 0 to 0 Huarte walked center-fielder Dave Cissell. The Spartan whiz stole second and third and came home with the winning run on a squeeze by right fielder Don Bartley.
Geiberger Retains Individual Title
HESPERIA (UPI)—AI Geiberger retained his individual title and led the USC Trojans to their ninth consecutive team championship yesterday in Southern California Intercollegiate golf competition.
Geiberger put together two rounds of 73 each for a 146, two over par, compared to teammate John Nichols and Dan Frederickson of the University of California at Riverside, who deadlocked at 154. Nichols won a sudden-death playoff for second with a birdie on the first hole.
USC's team score was 456 against 478 for UCLA. Occidental was third with 482, Los Angeles State had 492, San Diego State 496, California at Riverside 504, Pomona State 533, Loyola 538 and Long Beach State 547.
White Sox Await Del Ennis' Arrival
CHICAGO (UPI)—The Chicago White Sox awaited the arrival today of outfielder Del Ennis from Cincinnati at least a temporary answer to their search for a long ball hitter.
The 33-year-old veteran of 13 major league seasons became White Sox property Friday. In exchange the American League contenders sent left handed pitcher Don Rudolph and Lou Skizas to the Reds. Skizas was immediately assigned to the Reds' farm in Havana.
Ennis, a right handed hitter, played in only five games this season, hitting .333 and driving in one run for the Reds. He had his worst season last year, batting .261 in 106 games for the St. Louis Cardinals. He batted in 47 runs and hit only three homers.
Percentagewise, Ennis hit a low of 1:30.9.
Following the meet, Hager expressed great pleasure over his team's showing and stated that, "It was a combined effort."
He paid tribute to his coaching staff as well as the ball club saying, "The boys wanted to win and also the coaches, Dale Hughes, Gene Donnelly, worked extremely hard with them.
Those qualifying will now advance to the CIF preliminaries a week from today at Kearney High in San Diego.
