Heavy Weight Load Given Vanetta Dee
LOS ALAMITOS — Betty Jo Kiser’s Vanetta Dee, one of the greatest of modern day quarter horse mares, packs a heavier load on her shoulders tomorrow than th 120 pound impost assigned her for the $20,000 Los Alamitos championship.
The extra load that Vanette Dee will carry with her is the fact that no horse has ever won the 440-yard spring classic twice.
Vanetta Dee won the race last year and set a new track record of 21.9 seconds for the quarter mile in doing it.
Her triumph matched that of such other great mares as Monita, Miss Meyers, Josie’s Bar and Miss Myrna Bar, all of whom tried for repeat scores and failed.
Now it is Vanetta Dee’s turn to try again.
And, hers, is not an easy task for she not only faces a formidable jinx, but a formidable field as well in a race that is probably quarter horse racing’s toughest, a race that such quarter horse greats as Johnny Dial and Go Man Go couldn’t win.
Nine other top stakes stars, including last week’s $28,000 Derby winner, Ray Seeley’s Tidy Too, make up the formidable field that will line up in the starting gate with Vanetta Dee.
The others are Sure Now, Vandy’s Flash, Clabber’s Win, Dr. Rand V., Clabber Bar, Easter Malden, First Call and Miss Louton.
Tidy Too, First Call and Miss Louton carry 116 pounds, the others 120.
The championship goes as the eighth race on a nine-race card that gets under way at 1:15 p.m. and which is expected to draw 11,000 fans who’ll be able to watch both the championship and the Kentucky Derby, the latter via large screen TV sets placed throughout the Los Alamitos stands.
Allen Going ‘All Out’ For Auto Race Victory
Car owner Mell Allen of Long Beach is going all out in his efforts to stop the string of wins posted by San Diiego drivers in auto races at Gardena Stadium.
This became quite evident today as he entered a stable of three machines — Bobby Hogle in a 1956 Buick, Jack Kelly in a '56 Corvette and Clyde Mitchell in a '56 T-Bird. San Diego, where sportsman autos blossomed into the No. one motor attraction in recent years, got the drop on Los Angeles but the gap is rapidly being closed, officials say.
Sportsman autos powered by souped-up, late-model engines may be termed glorified hot rods, as they’re a sort of cross between a roadster and sprint car with a coupe body. They attain speeds up to 100 mph on the straightaways, drivers report.
First event Saturday night starts 8:15 p.m. after trials at 7. Gardena is located on S. Western Ave., at 139th St.

This nylon tubeless tire seals punctures permanently, whether you run over loose nails or a board full of spikes. A patented sealant inside the tire grips each nail firmly, preventing loss of air. Then when the nail pulls out, or when you remove it, the sealant follows it into the hole making a permanent air-tight repair.

Hebert Leads Tourney
FORT WORTH, Tex. (UPI) — Lionel Hebert, the Louisiana larruper whose putting in recent months has been "the worst in my experience," led the Colonial National invitation golf tournament by a stroke today as the select field turned into the second round.
The chunky, 31-year-old member of the Hebert golfing brothers clipped three strokes off Colonial's 7,000-yard par 35-35—70 layout Thursday and it earned him a one-stroke lead over veteran Ted Kroll, of Sarasota, Fla., who finished early with a 35-33—68.
"I've been playing better from tee to green than any time since I turned pro in 1960," Lionel said, "but my putting has been horrible. I've always had trouble with the long putts, but it got to the point I couldn't even get a short one to drop."
"I got a new mallet head putter at Houston, where I finished in the money but out of the top 20. I think I've solved most of my troubles on the greens."
Hebert, despite his optimism, still missed four putts of eight feet or less in posting his 33—67, but had to overcome a double bogey six on the river-bordered fifth hole to forge his leadership.
The third-place 69-bracket was loaded with four players, including hot-shooting Tournament of Champions titlist Mike Souchak of Grossinger, N.Y., Houston Classic champ Jack Burke of Klama a Lake, N.Y., homestowner Ben Hogan and Bill Johnston of Provo, Utah.
Four others managed to match par. They were Tommy Jacobs of Whittier, Calif., Dow Finsterwald of Tequesta, Fla., Jim Ferree of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Gardner Dickinson of Panama City, Beach, Fla.
