CHANGE IN ATTIC — A good place to put that much needed family room is in the attic. This charming room, once waste space, is now the favorite spot in the house. Focal point of room is gable end which was replaced with glass set stout Douglas fir mullions. Stairwell, rich paneled with west coast hemlock, makes elegant hospitable entrance to family room. TAKE GRILL ON TRIP A small outdoor grill is excellent for taking on a camping trip, according to Arvin Industries experts. By building fires in the metal brazier, the camper doesn't have to worry about unextinguished embers starting forest fires. One new grill, with legs only three inches long, is especially suitable for use on camping trips. Dusty Attic Becomes Added Home Asset Among the most fortunate people in the country are those who have a dusty, catch-all attic in their home, for it is here that that sparkling new, badly needed room or extra bedroom can be installed. Providing adequate access to the new room, admittedly, can a bit tricky, but with the skill help of an architect, anything possible. Because of the lack of space can be devoted to it, the stairwell usually will have steep and of the wrap-around sign. However, this liability becomes an asset if care is given to its "decor." For instance, emphasizing stead of trying to minimize stairwell's verticality often off. This can be done by paning the stairwell with a hands wood like creamy beige west of hemlock and installing the p boards vertically. Then, a lam handsome contemporary do can be hung above the stairwell provide the flood of light it need and to continue the upward size of space. At the top, a simple decorative railing furnishes the ishing touch. Decorating the new room trick at all, although for an room, the decor should be light warm. Continuing the hemlock paneling from the stairwell into attic room is probably the easiest and surest way to introduce lightness and textured warmth. The hemlock paneling should course, be finished clear, with a coat of sealer applied to bolt out its natural coloring and allowed by a protective topping wax or lacquer. A lot of character and natu light will grace this attic room; the gable end is replaced glass, a feat not nearly so difficult as it might sound. According to the National Warm Air Heating and Air Conditioning Association, that roof overhang, those shades, venetian blinds, outside awnings and solar screening all affect how cool and comfortable you're going to be this summer. But the big advancement made by the nation's largest trade association concerned with keeping the American family comfortable through use of an air conditioning central system is how to quickly and accurately determine the value of roof overhang. What they've come up with is embodied in a revised issue of their best seller, Manual 11, entitled "Heat Gain Calculation and System Design for Summer Air Conditioning." Explaining that all the material in the authoritative booklet can be applied to new or existing residences, Association Managing Director George Boeddener said: “This new Fourth Edition has been expanded to include the best data experience available as of December 1958. "It represents scientific inquiry conducted by the Association at the University of Illinois and the consolidated knowledge and experience of the Association's members — the leading manufacturers of air conditioning equipment in the United States." By utilizing the Manual, architects and builders can pre-determine the most advantageous orientation of the house and how wide the overhang design should comfort into the home during the hot, muggy months. The homeowner saves in two ways when the climate is made to work for you — instead of against you. Original cost of the equipment is held to an absolute minimum and operating cost also kept low. And, proper size assures best comfort to occupants. “Because,” Boeddener said, “there is little opportunity, except in country areas, to properly orient the house — that's the direction it faces — other methods can be used to reduce the heat gains from the sun.” One of these is roof overhang. This is building the roof out over the edge of the house a few feet to cut down the severe, intense rays of the sun at its hottest moment, but at the same time allowing sufficient sunlight to enter the rooms for illumination. Manual 11 describes how you can determine the effect of the sun on the shaded and unshaded glass areas beneath the overhang. By entering such measurements as the direction the wall faces and the width of the overhang, the shade line factor is determined from a new table developed by the Technical Department of the Association. Six additional items of information are entered on the work sheet and in a brief period of time and is released within a picture. This is heat which may removed by the air conditioner, the desired temperature and mildity conditions are to be maintained within the structure. This is one of the 33 sin definitions in the forward of the Manual that are explained easy - to - understand last. Interest Increases For 'Pacific-Style' Pacific - style houses are drawing interest and big crowds wherever builders put them up, reports a national magazine. Pacific - style, a blend of modern and traditional design borrowing freely from Japanese details, showed up first in California but is currently catching on all across the U.S. It features: deep, overhanging roofs, sliding screens, tile flooring, good indoor-outdoor relationships, and extensive use of natural materials. Opinions from three different sections of the country in the magazine agree about the growing popularity of the style: West Coast Thirty $24,450 Pacific-style homes were sold from drawings in Newport Beach. Because of the success of the model, Builder Austin Sturtevant has turned over one-third of his production (150 houses a year) to Pacific-style models. Says he: "Pacific style is big news out here. People like it and are ready to buy it." Midwest A $39,500 Pacific-style house with $2,500 swimming pool, put up by St. Louis builder Burton Denke attracted over 10,000 visitors and a family bought it before it was finished. Denke plans to prefabricate the house, sell it through dealers of his Modular Homes organization. Gerry Mefferd of that organization says: "...very definitely a design trend. It is already a big attention getter." I've talked with builders and I know they are going to build these houses in several developments in this part of the country." Experts predict that many more Pacific-style houses will be seen everywhere. Says Architect Hank York: "I like it because it can be a happy blend of good design and sensible construction. In his case, the motto should mean: Be prepared against mishaps with tools, have on hand a variety of nails, screws and other fasteners; keep available framing lumber and construction panels for routine repairs, maintenance and improvement jobs. Planning ahead along these lines will eliminate special trips to hardware stores and lumber yards for needed materials. Especially desirable, in addition to the "nuts and bolts" assortment, is a selection of framing lumber. Masonite hardboard and Peg-Board in short lengths for a variety of fix-up and maintenance jobs. Straight 1x2's and 1 x 3's are good for the framing of most household projects, and there should be some ¼" square lumber, too, for framing Peg-Board panels to be hung in closets and other areas for decorative and storage purposes. Short lengths of Masonite tempered hardboard are excellent, for example, as sliding doors for new or old cabinets. Doors not over one foot high may be unframed ¼-inch material; higher ones should be 2-inch thick. Among the dozens of home fixup ideas in which hardboard is ideal because of its smooth surface, durability, fine finishing qualities and economy are these: Vertical dividers in cabinets; new non-skid surfaces for basement stairs, with rough screened side exposed; closures for unused doors or windows; new bottoms for drawers and backs for dressers; new surfaces for doors converted from panel to flush type; new tops for workbench, card tables and other work surfaces.
