The Governing Board of Trustees of the Anaheim Union High School District Commercial Jet Airplanes Proving 'Safest Way to Fly,' Executive Says By FRANK EIDGE United Press International MIAMI (UPI) — Commercial jet planes are proving to be "the safest way to fly," according to a top airline executive. "We are under radar sighting all the way and are getting the kid glove treatment from everyone," explained Lewis (Lew) W. Dymond, a National Airlines vice president. Jet passenger planes are moving into the higher air lanes — 24,000 feet and above — which are crowded with supersonic military planes and safety experts shudder at the possibility of a collision between a jetliner — most carry more than 100 persons — and a bomber or fighter. "But", Dymond reported, "we have not had one near miss or incident in more than 300 jet flights." He said that three aerial "near misses" recently all involved either piston engine or prop-jet aircraft that were operating in the congested air lanes below the level of the jets. Dymond is flight operations boss of National, which was the first airline to begin jet passenger service within U.S. borders. It has been flying the 116 - passenger Boeing 707, on lease from Pan American World Airways, since Dec. 10 on one of the nation's busiest air routes, Miami-New York. From takeoff to landing, Dymond said, the big swept-wing craft are under constant observation by radar installations of the Air Defense Command located near Tampa, Fla., Savannah, Ga., Charleston, S.C., Wilmington N.C. Tentative Tract Map Presented To City Council Santa Ana Mayor Dale Heinly came before the City Council Tuesday night to request approval of tentative tract map 3290 for his clients, the Luxury Homes. The tract in question is located roughly on the west side of Rio Vista St., a portion of it approximately 600 feet south of east La Palma and another portion 1,321 feet south of east La Palma. Contained therein are 120 R-1 lots. Council was reluctant to approve the map due to the fact that a piece of property at its southeast corner, 115 feet by 132 feet, and facing onto Rio Vista, is not included in the proposed subdivision. A potential nuisance value was foreseen, since street improve- LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE TO BIDDERS NOTICE 15 HEREBY GIVEN THAT the Board of Trustees of the Anaheim Union High School District, County of Orange, State of California, will receive bids up to 100 P.M. on Thursday, May 1999 at their Administrative Office located at 123 North Citron Street, Anaheim, Calif. for the following: 17 car units of Privotrainers plus Recorder, Automatic Shift Unit, Pilane Screw Sheets, Projection Screen, and Installation Costs. This is a constantly signalling device that makes an airplane "show up like a searchlight on the radar screens whatever the weather conditions," Dymond said. The newly-created Federal Aviation Agency has civilian employees manning the radar tracking stations. They maintain direct radio contact with the planes aloft so that they can divert them instantly from any danger that pops up on the radar scanners. The FAA will construct its own radar checking stations at points throughout the nation now covered by the military installations. A military bomber or fighter plane wishing to cross the jet passenger plane routes must first obtain clearance from the FAA and also be equipped with a transponder. The radar blanket eventually will become only a backstop for a completely automatic "aerial traf." If you travel by car remember that Canada uses the "imperial gallon," which is 20 per cent bigger than the U.S. gallon.Remember also that the U.S.dollar is valued at slightly less than the Canadian dollar, based on the Wall Street rate of exchange which is determined by the law of supply and demand. American travelers will find convenient to obtain Canadian funds from their bank before entering Canada thereby saving them bother of making calculation when spending money. In Canada only the major cities provide night clubs.Montreal has more nightspots in proportion to its population (1,700,000) than any other city in North America. Don't think everyone in Canada speaks English.Residents in most of Quebec province, parts of New Brunswick and Ontario, speak French. Also elsewhere,English spoken。 BIRTHS Anaheim Memorial Hospital April 23 William DeBoar, 1213 Topaz, Anaheim, boy, 7 lbs., 6 ozs. Plot plans submitted by Troutman of Council members indicated that adequate off-street parking and form up space would be available, and that ingress and egrees would be such that traffic would not suffer from the existence of the mortuary. In another request to construct and operate a mortuary at 2433 W. Lincoln Ave., Council set May 19 as the date of a public hearing. The request was submitted by Edwin Daly. Preliminary County Jail Plans Get County OK SANTA ANA (OCNS) — By a three to one vote just before noon yesterday, County Supervisors approved preliminary plans for a new jail and Sheriff's Building in the County Civic Center here. The vote, in effect, authorized payment of a two and one-half per cent architect's fees for designing the three million dollar structure. The dissenting vote was cast by Supervisor William Phillips. No action was taken on a pending motion to authorize preparation of final plans. One-Man Team Sheinwold on Bridge By ALFRED SHEINWOLD U.S. Masters Team Champion Suits Never Break In Bridge Books If you want stories with a happy ending, don't look for them in bridge books. In the literature of the game, suits never break and finesse never work. The typical bridge hero wears not only suspenders and a belt but also two pairs of pants. Which trump? The average player would lead the king of spades from force of habit. Down he would go. No hero he. West would capture the king of spades with the ace. East would later get two additional trump tricks. Low Lead Works The correct play is to begin the trumps by leading a low card. As it happens, this knocks out the singleton ace. South can draw two more trumps with the king and queen, after which his contract is safe. South cannot be sure that his first low trump will knock out the ace. If a low trump wins the trick, South expects to regain the lead and return the king of spades. This will work whenever the trumps break 3-2 (with one unlikely exception). The only 4-1 break South can provide against is that in which an opponent has the singleton ace. South should provide for that first and worry later about the 3-2 breaks. If you're wondering about the exception, here it is: West has three trumps. When South leads a low trump, West wins and leads a low diamond for his partner. proved preliminary plans for a new jail and Sheriff's Building in the County Civic Center here. (UPI)—Joe Kershalla of West Liberty State Teachers scored 71 points on 11 touchdowns and five points after touchdown, Nov. 19, 1932, in a football game against Cedarville College. The average player would go down at four spades on this hand, as Donald Parson points out in his entertaining new book, "The Fall of the Cards." Only the typical bridge hero would make the contract. South's only problem is to limit the trump loss to two tricks. (UPI) — If a general had walked in, he would have been surprised. On the floor were colonels, majors and captains—playing jackets. The Air Force believes a variation of the children's game, called mat jacks, has recreational value. The high-ranking officers, attending a world conference of Air Force recreation officers, wanted to see for themselves. The game was "invented" by Leo F. Milan of Denver, Colo., who is working on a doctorate in recreation at Florida State University here. It comes complete with a three-by-five-foot canvas mat, to keep the players off dirty floors. For added interest, a circle is provided in the center and cut into numbered slices like a pie. The rules for mat jacks are standardized and eliminate a lot of the pure luck of the children's game, making it more a matter of skill—as the officers found out on bended knees. And mat jacks may be played in singles or doubles. MONTEPELIER, Vt.
