Bob Crosby Improving Star View
Bob Crosby likes to say that he has always been behind his brother Bing on the ladder of success, and adds that he can think of lots of places where the view would be better.
Apparently, the view is improving since the youngest of five sons of Harry Lillis Crosby Sr., has become orchestra leader, singer, straight man, star of CBS Radio's "Club 15" for 5½ years, supporting comedian on CBS Radio and Television's "Jack Benny Program," and star of his own CBS-Television "Bob Crosby Show."
George Robert (Bob) Crosby was born in Spokane, Wash., Aug. 23, 1913. Through school and later at Gonzaga University in Washington State, he gained an early taste of fame as a successful all-round athlete.
His professional career got underway somewhat shakily, at the age of 13, when he appeared on an amateur show, and after the orchestra played five introductions, discovered that he couldn't utter a note.
This same stage fright was with Bob some years later when he showed up an hour late to audition for orchestra leader, Anson Weeks. Frightened, and grabbing his trousers because he'd forgotten his suspenders, the young singer somehow got through his songs and landed the job with Weeks.
Eleven New York music makers approached young Crosby in 1933, and asked if he would lead their new band. This marked the start of the famed "Crosby Bobcats." By 1938, the group had hit big time, racking up play dates at swank supper clubs and night clubs throughout the country. Later, they moved on to Hollywood where they appeared in such films as "Let's Make Music," "As Thousands Cheer," "See Here, Private Hargrove," "Pardon My Rhythm" and many more musical hits.
Besides many films, appeared nearly every year is recognized nation-wise leading Master of Singer, Recording Star vision Personality. Bo months with the U. during World War which time he organized with bands thru Pacific Theater. He lieutenant's commissi Maine Corps Reserve.
