Dear Abby... Pro & Cons! by Abigail Van Buren DEAR ABBY: DO DOGS HAVE A LANGUAGE? The answer is NO! They have "signals," such as a friendly greeting ("yip"), a warning bark, a growl of displeasure, or a whine of begging, but they say nothing intelligible. There are other members of the animal kingdom who communicate with each other, however. The bee does a dance to inform other bees where a flower with nectar is located. Man's closest relatives, apes and monkeys are more articulate. Marmosets have a language that can be tape recorded and when played back can cause them to line up for food. The orangutan stands on the very threshold of human speech. At least 32 words are known in the chimpanzee vocabulary ("whoo whoo whoo"). Gibbons have nine distinct calls, each with a special meaning such as, "Let's get some fruit" and "Stay away from my wife," etc. Vance Packard's "ANIMAL I Q" is my authority. Sincerely, BRUCE D. DEAR ABBY: A friend of mine is a well-known animal trainer and he says that he has traveled all over the world training animals and animals DO talk. He further states that French poohles talk French and German Shepherds talk German and Russian wolfhounds talk Russian. Now, what do you say to that? ELLIS DEAR ELLIS: I say that your friend has been handling you a little Boston Bull. DEAR ABBY: I have been looking for my Bible but I can't find it. I wanted to tell you the chapter and verse where it came from, but please take my word for it. It IS in the Bible. It says in the Bible that God gave man the power to speak and he did not bestow this gift on any other living creature. That should settle the question of whether or not dogs have a language. I thank you. BIBLE STUDENT DEAR ABBY: You wanted to know if dogs had a language of their own? Of course they do! "Shep" has been my companion for nine years, and he says to me very plainly, "HELLO THERE" and others can tell you that they can understand him, too. When Shep talks to other dogs he uses an entirely different language, but I can tell if they are arguing or just talking. When adults learn to bark they will have come a long way. Those two days mark the annual Bell Ringing campaign of the Orange County Association for Mental Health, seeking funds to promote improved care, treatment and rehabilitation of the mentally ill and handicapped. Volunteer workers recruited by the Association will visit homes throughout the county for contributions during the two-day drive, which was announced by Mrs. Finley L. Riggs of Santa Ana, president of the Association. In cooperation with the National Association for Mental Health and the California Association for Mental Health, the Orange County group is devoted to development of a coordinated, voluntary citizen's movement "to improve services and methods in research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and handicaps", Mrs. Riggs explained. It is the only citizen's movement concerned with care and treatment of the mentally ill, and with rehabilitation of convalescent and discharged patients, she stated. "We cooperate with other groups in educational activities and projects to promote mental health and prevent mental illness", Mrs. Riggs said. Bell Ringing headquarters at 1302 N. Broadway, Santa Ana, provide the base of operations. Officers of the Association, in addition to Mrs. Riggs, are Warren Mendenhall, Santa Ana, assistant county superintendent of schools, first vice-president; Mrs. Ruth Ryden, South Laguna, second vice-president; Mrs. Norbert Schalk, Anaheim, secretary; Mrs. William H. Porter, Fullerton treasurer. Dr. Raymond C. Herold, Newport Beach, is chair of the professional advisory committee. Mrs. Riggs announced Frank McNeese, associated with Orange real estate firm formerly connected with the city health departments, will serve as director of the Bell Ringing campaign.
