Pending Legislation Would Ruin County Fair
(Continued From Page 1)
the racing revenue in the state general fund, and require each county fair to ask the state legislatures for an annual appropriation.
Yost feels that this practice would subject county fair finances to political pressures, and would produce an uncertainty of future revenues. In turn, this uncertainty would prohibit fair boards from long range planning of capital improvements, he said. The alternate proposed legislation, Senate Bill 1230, would inaugurate much stricter requirements for showing financial need before a county fair could receive money from the special fair fund, Yost said. Few counties would receive the maximum assistance of $65,000, he pointed out.
Other savings would result from a sharp reduction in state contributions for building improvements at county fairs, he said. According to Yost, the Senate Bill has the support of Senator John Murdy of Orange County.
The Senate Bill would delete state assistance to citrus fairs, and to the state fair. It would also return fair surpluses of small counties back to the state.
Orange County's annual fair budget has been $150,000, of which $65,000 came from the state. However, last year there was a $27,000 deficit.
In support of his stand that the Orange County Fair is deserving of both public support, and state funds, Yost asserted that the county fair is continually encouraging youth exhibitors and projects. He said that last year's fair had 2,500 exhibits entered by youngsters.
Future plans include a junior exhibition building, to be built in 1960, and an auditorium exhibition.

Buena Park Sets New Precincts For School Vote
BUENA PARK — With the upcoming Buena Park School Bond elections the district has made another precinct in the north part of the city.
Voters living in the area north of the railway tracts in the District will have a precinct in that area for the June 16 school bonds and tax override election, according to District Superintendent Carl Gilbert.
The fifth precinct in the district will serve the Bellehurst area. The polling place will be the Teen Center at the Los Coyotes Country Club.
A portion of the precinct voting at the McComber School has been switched to the Lindbergh precinct. The area lies south of the railroad tracts, north of Artesia Street and east of Grand Ave.
At stake in the June election is a state loan acceptance of $500,000 and a bond for $450,000. Both would be used for completion of the 8th St. School, and the site purchase and building of two more schools. Both need a two-thirds majority to pass.
The tax override issue is to raise the override by 45 cents per $100 assessed valuation to $1.55. However, a five-year limitation has been imposed. If the measure fails, the 20 cent override now in effect will also be lost, and educational services will be greatly curtailed.
District Superintendent Gilbert has outlined five areas where services will be cut: 1. Four teachers in manual training, home economics, vocal music and instrumental music. 2. Class average
Consider Bidding In Planning Play
How can you tell which suit is going to break horribly? This is sometimes like trying to predict where lightning is going to strike. The suit break is not, however, quite so unpredictable.

West opens the six of spades. East puts up the king, and you win with the ace. You can now expect to win two tricks in each suit. Where will you seek the ninth trick?
Entries to your own hand are so scarce that you should forget about spades and clubs. You must plan to develop one extra trick in either hearts or diamonds.
You can pick either suit if it
and You now cash the ace hearts and discover the bad new The diamonds can no longer bring in.
You might still make the contract by very expert play. You’d be much better off if you started with the diamonds instead of the hearts. At the second try you duck a diamond. Back comes a club to dummy’s ace, and you cash the top diamonds and give up a diamond. Now you have nice tricks.
How do you know which suit will break 5-17 East’s weak jump over call of two spades provides a valuable clue.
East is pretty likely to be shown in hearts; the suit mentioned mediately before his jump over call. Hence the hearts may weaken 5-1.
Is East likely to have five diamonds to make up for his shortness in hearts? This is unlikely. East should have a six-card spade. If he also has five diamonds he is more likely to jump to the spades than to merely two spades. Hence the 5-1 break in diamonds is very unlikely. South should stay on the diamonds and make his contract easily.

The opponents are vulnerals and you are not. Partner bids on heart, and the next player back two spades. You hold: Spades 9 4 Hearts 10 7 Diamonds

Police Investigate Three Burglary Reports Here
(Continued From Page 1)
truders had gone through every drawer in the house, tossing items removed onto the floor.
Entrance was gained, police said, by rearing the screen from the rear door and reaching inside and turning the knob.
Among the items taken were: a ladies diamond ring valued at $100, a ladies wrist watch valued at $65, a $75 rotisserie, a $30 clock-radio and a $33 deep fryer.
The third burglary, executed against the Willard Legg Shell Station at 2004 E Orangehorse, accounted for a $440.58 loss in trespass, a clock, and an adding machine.
Thomas A. Stoerk, attendant, told police that the crime occurred between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. He said that all was well at 1 a.m. when a customer picked his car up.
Police said that the thief gained entrance by cutting the padlock on the accordion gate to the lube rack. Tires, valued at $305.08 were taken, and the adding machine worth $135.

RIDDLE:
Why are the feathers on each arrow in our archery sets a different color?
ANSWER: It is positively not because the workers in our arrow factory are color blind. It is because this enables each archer to tell which arrow is his.
We have the darndest time raising green and yellow and purple turkeys, but we do want our customers to keep their arrows straight.
By the way, we sell them for 19c each, which is terribly low priced you know. The arrows, that is, this week only.
