Broken Toe Leads Man On Quest For New York-Montreal Sea Way By FRED DANZIG United Press International NEW YORK (UPI) — In August, 1956, a retired Army officer broke a toe and was forced to stay in his New York apartment for many weeks. Rather than remain idle, Col. William L. Rich, a consulting engineer and investment counsellor, let his thoughts turn to a visit he had recently made to the St. Lawrence Seaway construction site in upper New York State. As a former transportation chief for the New York Board of Trade, Col. Rich believed the new Seaway was going to hurt the Port of New York. BIOLA Rally To Feature 'Brainwashing' Professor J. O. Henry, teacher in the history department at Biola College will give a special message Sunday afternoon in the campus auditorium on Biola Avenue north of Rosecrans, in La Mirada. The afternoon meeting is a regular weekly feature of the 50-year-old Bible Institute of Los Angeles Incorporated which will move to its new campus facility in La Mirada in September of this year. The rallies are conducted each Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Professor Henry has made an extensive study of Communist brainwashing particularly as it is treated in the famed Meyer reSome estimates are that there will be a reduction of 3,500 waterfront jobs and a loss of 15 million dollars in payroll alone. Rich began studying maps to see how to turn this potentially harmful project to New York's advantage. He hit upon an idea: why not tie the Port of New York into the St. Lawrence Seaway? This could be done by means of a 450-mile New York - Montreal Seaway, utilizing the Midson River, the Champlain Canal, Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River in Canada. In December, 1956, Rich began circulating among influential Americans his eight-page report, "A Program to Restore New York to its Former Position as the Greatest Seaport in the World." His report said a New York-Montreal Seaway, tied into the St. Lawrence at Sorel, about 45 miles northeast of Montreal, would enable ocean liners and cargo carriers to save 2,800 miles on every New York - Montreal round trip by eliminating the voyage around Newfoundland. He said the seaway also would provide an unlimited supply of fresh water for cities adjacent to the Hudson River, would open new sites for industrial plants, provide new access routes to Midwest cities, offer new horizons for scenic tours. Shortly after releasing his report, Rich learned that in 1937, Army engineers had surveyed the route for a New York - Montreal Seaway, found it practicable, but suggested that action be postponed until the dream of a St. Lawrence Seaway became a reality. "We're ready for the New York - Montreal Seaway now," says Rich, who is 69, jovial and filled with enthusiasm and optimism for his pet project. "And by the way," he added, "imagine how pleased I was." Nedra Scott PRESENTS Fashion FOR Spring & Summer Tuesday, April 28 SPECIAL TUESDAY LUNCHEON In The CHARIOT ROOM. NAHEIM BOWL 1925 W. Bulletin—B-3 Around Hollywood By Vernon Scott UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Welshman Richard Burton is playing an American for the first time in his movie career and working overtime not to sound "offensively British." Through long hours of tape-recording his voice, and playing it back, the actor is ironing out his clipped accent. "Fortunately, I'm portraying an Eastern American," he said between takes at Warner Brothers. "I would never play a Midwester or a Californian." Up to now Burton has starred in historical epics, mostly in England. His half-dozen Hollywood films have been limited to costume dramas and British roles. He hopes his performance in "The Bramble Bush" will be convincing enough to pave the way for more American parts. Accent An Asset "For some reason a British accent is an asset in historical movies," he observed. "It also comes in handy for playing royalty of any nationality. The third is Kensington English which is so extreme it can barely be spoken or understood. But I must say, it is easier for an Englishman to lose his speech mannerisms than it is for an American. "So far no American has been accepted playing a Britiser in an English picture." Career In Eclipse Burton, back in Hollywood after a three-year absence, boomed to international fame seven years ago playing Marcellus in "The Robe," which has been seen by more millions than any film made in the past 15 years. Since then his career has gone into something of an eclipse. "Artistically 'The Robe' wasn't a good picture, but it had tremendous popular appeal," he said. "It didn't help me as an actor, yet I don't think it harmed me either. "The trouble with epics is you have so many lines to speak there isn't time to act. A smaller picture like 'The Bramble Bush' affords an opportunity to deal in silence. I've worked harder on this film than any other," he went on.
