Of such nature was the testimony that Superior Court Judge Robert Gardner, on the request of the defendant, requested all persons under 21 years of age to leave the court room. A group of teenage girls - there have been many students attending the proceeding - left the room.

"Acting is the only thing in my life, and I can stop taking the stuff for good if I just have a reason, but I haven't found one. Sometimes I feel I'll be in and out of this jail all my life because there's no place to go. Most of the girls come back."
Barbara is serving a 90-day sentence at the nearby Terminal Island Detention Center on a misdemeanor narcotics conviction.

Jordan Denies Charges Leveled in Report on State Debt Collectors
SACRAMENTO (UPI) — Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan and two of his aides were on record today as denying almost any and all charges made in a sizzling Senate investigating committee report on debt collectors.
The Senate committee report accused Jordan and Harry Edwards, chief of the Division of Collection Agencies, and Stanley G. Windrem, assistant chief of lax administration of collection agencies, debt liquidators and private detectives.
"The whole damn report is slanted." Jordan told newamen at a press conference in his office.
Flanked by Edwards and Windrem, Jordan gave reporters a typewritten statement which he at first said was his own. It said the committee's charges "remain unsubstantial" and that the administration of state laws regulating collection agencies was a "model one" admitted by other states.
Under questioning by reporters, it developed the statement was written in part by Robert Jones, a registered lobbyist and chairman of the legislative committee of the California Association of Collectors Inc.
Jordan eventually denied that it was his statement, but he did say that the document in his opinion "is factual."
Edwards did most of the talking for the trio.
He said the Senate report contained "misstatements" and in some respects was false.
Russian Dog Baffle
By ALINE MOSBY
United Press International
MOSCOW (UPI) — I've interviewed Lassie the TV canine and Trigger the movie horse, but strolling around Moscow with a two-headed dog is downright electrifying.
The animal is Russia's "surgeal Sputnik" and may go down in medical history as the key to results that seem like science fiction —from replacing lost limbs and worn out organs to possible rejuvenation.
I met the medical marvel at the First Medical Institute, an ornate stone building on a Moscow side street.
Dr. Vladimir Demikhov, the trained transplant surgeon who performed the operation, introduced huge German Shepherd with an appealing head and forelegs of little white puppy panting happily on the back of its neck.

SACRAMENTO (UPI) — California's unique cross-filing law headed today toward oblivion.
The Senate voted, 22-15, Thursday to repeal the controversial election law and sent the bill to Democratic Gov. Edmund G. Brown, who is ready and eager to sign it. It already has been approved by the Assembly, 49-29.
Under cross-filing, a law which has been on the books since the day of Hiram Johnson back in 1913, candidates regardless of their party affiliation could file in the primary election on either the Democratic or Republican ticket.
Down through the years, the practice of cross-filing generally worked in favor of the incumbent office-builder, be he Republican or Democrat. In many elections, incumbent legislators or congressmen captured both party nominations in the primary without opposition.
The Democratic Party platform long has favored repeal of the law on the grounds that it was confusing to the people.
This year, with Democrats holding the governor's office and a comfortable majority in both houses of the Legislature, the bill went through about not without some strong opposition.
In the Senate debate, Sen. James A. Cobey (D-Merced) said repeal of the law would "get rid of a completely illegal and hypothetical process."
"The primary purpose of a primary election is to choose the party's nominee," he said. The greatest bulwark against biosis is strong political parties with closed primaries."
Sen. Hugh Burns (D-Fresno) made the principal argument against repealing cross-filling. He cited a senate committee report of 1961 which said:
"Repeal would be a step, backward. Under cross-filing California has been free from the plight of party bossism. It is the main reason there has not been party dictatorship."
To those who argued straight party primaries would deny voters freedom to choose the candidates of their choice regardless of party affiliation, Cobey replied, "Voters still will have freedom of choice in general elections."
On the Senate roll call, 21 Democrats were joined by a lone Reverend Showers on for Week End.

Dr. Demikhov performed the operation when the puppy was a month old by joining major blood vessels. The fact that the puppy has lived almost a month is astounding.
The doctor took the dog — or rather the 1 1/3 dogs — out for a walk with me. Children in school uniforms clustered around to stare as children used to gape at horse-less carriages 50 years ago.
At first the big dog, named Pi-rat, resisted the walk because he has to be led by his ears (where would you put the collar?) Otherwise he didn't seem to care whether two heads are better than one.
"The big dog doesn't understand," explained Demikhov. "He feels some kind of inconvenience, but he doesn't know what it is."
