C-10—Anaheim (Col.) Bulletin Thursday, April 22, 1959 Fair Employment Law May, Face Referendum SACRAMENTO (UPI)— Gov. Edmund G. Brown said today he would campaign from one end of the state to the other in defense of his fair employment practices legislation if a referendum to nullify the law appeared on the 1900 ballot. Brown told a news conference that he hoped backers of the referendum would fail to get the 262.-789 signatures necessary to place a referendum on the ballot. "I hate to see them promote an issue that could have some racial overtones in this day of tensions throughout the world," Brown said. "I wish they'd give the commission a chance to work for a year or two." J. Rupert Mason, San Francisco, Monday filed a request with the attorney general's office for a title of a referendum to overthrow Brown's newly enacted FEPC law.
