He took care of a telephone call, the kind his private secretary used to handle when he could afford her salary, and said he guessed "maybe there's another form of richness." Divorce attorney Starr's richness lies in the divorces he has averted, the couples whose differences he has helped resolve. Starr founded Divorcees Anonymous 10 years ago, hoping to dissuade some of his clients from ending their marriages. He brings together women who have obtained divorces, with those who plan to do so, for women-to-women talk of their problems and how they should be solved. Knows By Shrunken Income Similar organizations since have been formed in about 30 cities, he said. The group therapy has been eminently successful, Starr said. He has no statistics on the number of marriages saved, but measures the success by his shrunken income. "My business has dropped 75 per cent," he reckoned. "Maybe I could have retired by now, and maybe that would have been nice. But then maybe there's another form of richness." Starr, a tall, well-built man with sad eyes and a soft voice, was admitted to the bar in 1933, and has handled virtually nothing but divorce cases during his quarter-century of practice. How did his wife feel about the lost income? "She's been pretty nice," he said. "Whatever I've wanted, she's gone along with." Arguments are the most frequent cause of divorce, Starr said. "I never argue with my wife," he said. "I'm afraid to." Several friends have suggested I should be a marriage counselor, he said. "Maybe I will."
