Brain Improves Itself In Complex Training
BERKELEY (UPI) — Scientists at the University of California at Berkeley say they have found that "brain-training" may make smart people out of dull people.
While present experiments have been confined to rats, there seems to be a possibility that training produces measurable and lasting changes in the chemistry of the brain — changes which very likely improve the ability to learn.
In experiments on rats, the researchers have found that animals put through complicated training experiences show significant increases in the level of cholinesterase, a brain enzyme, in comparison to control animals which are identical except for their lack of training.
Some of the questions the scientists hope to answer in future experiments are:
— can the brain enzyme level of so-called dull rats be raised through training to the level of bright rats?
— can dull rats profit more than bright rats through training?
— is there a limited age at which training is effective?
—and are certain types of training more effective than others?

HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Robert Montgomery, slick leading man a past_era, has returned to roles after a seven-year hiatus produce and direct—but not in—a new movie.
The debonair star gave up film career to tackle television medium with which he is roughly fed up.
His show, "Robert Montgomery Presents," nose-dived two seas ago, after which Bob became advisor to President E. Hoover. He continues to hold his post with the President.
"Television is in bad shape. Industry never asks itself what is doing to or for the American public. And don't think it's TV." The public is paying for new demands for services created by television.
"The powers that be are convinced all TV must be separated into 'entertainment,' 'education,' and 'cultural' shows, and they can never be combined."
So Much Junk
"All these cowboy programs tempt us to show Americans favorite light, but just the site occurs. It's just so junk."
Montgomery, his hair strut with silver, still is a hand man who could well return playing leading roles among others of his era—Clark John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart Robert Taylor. But he doubles
Year For Tourists
CHICAGO (UPI) — Visitors to Chicago this summer will participate in one of the city's biggest tourist seasons.
Along with the normal amount of activity in museums, parks, sports, concerts, beaches, there will also be the International Trade Fair from July 2 to July 18 to celebrate the long-awaited opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Participating in the observances will be Queen Elizabeth II, as monarch of neighboring Canada.
The Festival of the Americas, from Aug. 3 to Sept. 7, will include the Pan American Games from Aug. 27 until its conclusion. Called the Olympics of the western hemisphere, the Pan American Games will bring to the U.S. More Latin Americans than any other single event in recent years.
Chicago is preparing not only to accommodate the athletes but to provide the necessary facilities for their competition. Rowing events, which cannot be held on the choppy Lake Michigan, will be moved to the rivers and canals of the Illinois Waterway.
Georgia was the first state to allow 18-year-olds to vote.
Simplify Travel Tour Experts Say
NEW YORK (UPI) — Package tours can help make your "dream trip" come true.
Worked out by experienced tour operators, these tours assume for the traveler the problem of how to get from air or train terminal to hotel. They have a local representative at each stop to assist with any problems and they carefully plan a sightseeing program that will utilize available time to the fullest. Another feature: you pay in advance. This eliminates doling out money along the way.
You can select a package tour to fit not only the time you have, the price you want to pay, the place you want to visit, but almost any hobby you want to pursue.
Another variation is possible in the choice of traveling companions. Some prefer to travel in a group, accompanied by an experienced guide to take care of details. Another type of escorted tour is one in which the group gets a guide for each city, but travels to the different cities on its own.
Independent package tours also are available for those who prefer to travel alone, or with friends or family.
Travel agents can show you many different types of tour and help select the one you will enjoy the most.
Hens Aren't Chicken In The Fight Field

Poultry experts at the Nutrena Feeds' research farm here said the "bosses" monopolize feed, ter and nests, sometimes even cowing the lowly into starvation.
BRITON AT HOME
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Englishman James Mason has deserted this movie capital temporarily to star in the sophisticated comedy-thriller, "ATouch of Larceny," which is being made in London.

HOLLYWOOD (UPI) — Robert Montgomery, slick leading man of last era, has returned to movie after a seven-year hiatus toduce and direct—but not star in a new movie.
The debonair star gave up his career to tackle television, a medium with which he is thoroughly fed up.
His show, "Robert Montgomery cents," nose-divided two seasons after which Bob became vice advisor to President Eisenhower. He continues to hold down post with the President.
Television is in bad shape, Montgomery said bitterly. "The industry never asks itself what it doing to or for the American public. And don't think it's 'free.' The public is paying for it through new demands for goods and services created by television."
The powers that be are concerned all TV must be separated from entertainment, 'educational' and 'cultural' shows, and that they can never be combined.
So Much Junk
"All these cowboy programs attempt to show Americans in a more light, but just the opposite occurs. It's just so much ugly."
Montgomery, his hair streaked with silver, still is a handsome man who could well return to playing leading roles along with others of his era—Clark Gable, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Robert Taylor. But he doubts if wars.
"I haven't had the time," he said.
"Right now I'm terrifically busy with my new picture, 'The Halsey Story.' The movie will be limited to three or four weeks of Admiral 'Bull' Halsey's life, during the Battle of the South Pacific. It's not a biography.
There's generally a period in every man's life when he either goes forward and accomplishes greater things, or disappears from public view. That's what happened to Halsey in 1942 when he commanded the 7th Fleet."
Cagney Plays Role
Montgomery first met the retired admiral in 1943 when the actor was serving aboard a destroyer in the Pacific.
"I had a tremendous admiration for his leadership." Montgomery recalled. "He's been a great help assisting us with the script, giving us details no documents provide.
"We've been fortunate in signing Jimmy Cagney for the title role. I've always wanted to do a picture with Jimmy. He looks a great deal like Halsey. And we've got Dennis Weaver—the actor who plays 'Chester' on 'Gunsmoke'—playing the second role."
It's nice to be back in Hollywood with a good picture ready to roll. But I'm on call any time the President needs me in Washington."

Spending Level Boost Slated for California
LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Government and consumer spending in 1950 is expected to reach 25 to 35 billion dollars more than the 1958 level.
This prediction comes from Dr. Theodore A. Anderson, associate professor of business administration at the University of California at Los Angeles.
Anderson says the upswing will result in a lengthening of the average work week, higher production and employment, greater output per man-hour and higher prices.
Andersen also predicted that employment in Los Angeles would rise by four per cent, a gain of 100,000 workers, while personal income and retail sales will go up eight per cent.
CAST IN CORAL SEA FILM
HOLLYWOOD (UPI)—Englishborn Patricia Cutts will play the second feminine lead in Charles Schneer's "Battle of the Coral Sea." She'll portray an Australian nurse.
So Much Junk
All these cowboy programs atempt to show Americans in a provocable light, but just the oppo-occurs. It's just so much nk.
Montgomery, his hair streaked with silver, still is a handsome man who could well return to playing leading roles along with others of his era—Clark Gable, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Robert Taylor. But he doubts if he will return to the greaspaint
Surgical Instruments Cleaned By Sound
WESTBURY, N.Y. (UPI) — Ultrasonic equipment is enabling hospitals to eliminate completely annual handling of surgical instruments during cleaning.
According to its manufacturer, the Narda Ultrasonics Corp. of Westbury, the new equipment supplements steam sterilizing and removes the danger of cross-infection from human hands.
Sound waves so high that they are inaudible to the human ear have been found effective in removing even the tiniest bits of dirt from the most tenacious surfaces, which are left not only clean out sterile as well.
