Tallulah, Dahling, Has Dreadful
By TOM NELSON
United Press International
WASHINGTON (UPI) — Tallulah, dahling, there's simply dreadful news from your precious friends in Congress.
They're not going to do a bloody thing about that bill you did so want them to pass.
It isn't that the House Ways & Means Committee pays no attention to the views of an actress the stature of Tallulah Bankhead.
You'll recall that your testimony on unemployment compensation last week got an attentive audience from the commissio
the dolls.
Nor does the committee sabotaged your own career though you must admit times you didn't help much.
For example, it did the liberalizing unemployment pensation little good to tax actors who drive up in the Royces to collect their jobless pay checks.
And to remark that thing's gone sky-high" we were told that benefits to $45 in New York—Weing.

$172-Million Water Program Law Signed
SACRAMENTO (UPI)—Gov. Edmund G. Brown has signed into law a bill earmarking California's $2 million-dollar investment fund for development of a statewide water program.
Brown said Monday that legislative passage of the bill had been "vital to solution of the state's water problems."
He said adoption of the measure by Assemblyman Bruce F. Allen (R-San Jose) was "a commitment to a water program in this session of the Legislature."
In a press statement, the governor attacked the "shortsighted, partisan" attempt of economy-bloc legislators to use the investment fund to balance the 1959-60 budget and thereby avoid new taxes.
"If it had succeeded, there would have been no water program for at least two years," he said. "Such a delay is intolerable in terms of the needs of both the north and the south."

Nor does the committee feel you sabotaged your own case, although you must admit that at times you didn't help much.
For example, it did the cause of liberalizing unemployment compensation little good to talk about actors who drive up in their Rolls-Royces to collect their weekly jobless pay checks.
And to remark that "everything's gone sky-high" when you were told that benefits rang up to $45 in New York—Well, dahl ing.
The problem is that what you want to do—provide for reciprocity of eligibility between states, to help unemployed actors—gets into the area of states' rights.
The feeling on the committee is that this business of reciprocity is a field that Congress should leave to the states.
When you began testifying last Tuesday, you complained you had not heard the previous remarks of the committee members "so I don't know whether you are for us or agin us."
It's sad, dahling, but they're agin you.
Disneyland 'Wild Ride' Injuries Alleged in Suit
SANTA ANA (OCNS) — "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" at Disneyland was apparently too wild for Mary Ricci.

The first commercial international flight in aviation history was made by a "Goliath" in which 11 passengers flew the 178 miles from Paris to London in two hours and 30 minutes in 1919.
