Pilots Have No Second Chance At Alaska Airstrip
By CHARLES R. MOORE
United Press International
SPARREVOHN, Alaska (UPI) — Maj. John S. Kupko, a husky man with crew-cut black hair and eyes that match the blue of his Air Force uniform, is one of a group of pilots whose work takes them to the ends of the earth.
But, he said, "there's no place like this in the entire world."
The 38-year-old MATS transport pilot didn't have time to say much more.
He was wrestling his four-engine Globemaster, which has the approximate dimensions of an Iowa hay barn, onto a mountain-locked airstrip that didn't look as if it should welcome anything bigger than a Piper Cub.
Narrow Landing Strip
Thirty two hundred feet long,
narrower than the 174-foot wing spread of the Globemaster, it was the airstrip at Sparrevohn, site of two vitally important military and civilian radar and communications stations.
One of these not only could locate enemy aircraft but could direct United States planes to the precise point to intercept them. Another part is a unique military and civilian radio communications system, White Alice, that links the far-flung cities and towns of the 49th state. They are a story in themselves. The Globemasters help supply them.
The runway is eight degrees uphill from the approach end, with the other end up against a 3,000-foot mountain, the stations are on its peak.
"Once you come through the gap, and get your wheels down about two miles out, had said earlier, 'you're mitted. One way or another you're going to land. There room to turn around in the quick halt."
For a few moments they bounced, dropped and shuffled as it hit the turbulent air to the ground. Then suddenly were on, and came quickly stop although the wind washind us. The hill usually brakes or prop reversal unsary.
"The landing is auto-said Kupko. "There is much in taking off."
After unloading cargo and ing around, he showed we meant while the pass sweated. Pieces of wreckage two that didn't make it all the runway.
But without cargo and wind in its nose, the Globe surged smoothly back in air. It was early evening and the afternoon turbulence subsided.
A non-pilot passenger Kupko:
"You make it look so think I could do it myself ko laughed, then turned to continue a highly technical cussion with a pilot who h along to observe.
"Keep your power high die the turbulence and do When you chop the pow lands herself."

Quick Halt
For a few moments the plane
bounced, dropped and shuddered
as it hit the turbulent air close
to the ground. Then suddenly we
were on, and came quickly to a
top although the wind was behind us. The hill usually makes
brakes or prop reversal unnecessary.
"The landing is automatic," said Kupko. "There is much more taking off."
After unloading cargo and turning around, he showed what he meant while the passengers sweated. Pieces of wreckage from two that didn't make it are near the runway.
But without cargo and with the wind in its nose, the Globemaster hurged smoothly back into the air. It was early evening then, and the afternoon turbulence had subsided.
A non-pilot passenger told Kupko:
"You make it look so easy I think I could do it myself." Kupko laughed, then turned back to continue a highly technical discussion with a pilot who had been along to observe.
"Keep your power high to handle the turbulence and downdraft. When you chop the power she lands herself."
Battling Finn Twin Wins Court Argument
WASHINGTON (UPI) — One of the battling Finn Twins took on the District of Columbia government Monday over a parking ticket—and won.
Charles C. Finn, one of the twins who successfully fought the federal government over ownership of a surplus airplane, was accused of failing to put a dime in a parking meter.
Finn complained that he had been arrested just as he'd pulled into the parking space and hadn't had time to deposit the dime.
He also told the judge that the policeman was only going to give him a ticket until he found out who he was and then decided to take him into court.
Traffic Judge George D. Neilson dismissed the charges, Finn currently lives here.

Ground water broken and the gritic task begun.
War Came Along
Plans called for exposition
buildings as large as railroad stations; not "jerry-built" to last one
season, but built like the colosseum to last for ages.
Marble columns as long as 25 feet and as thick as a work horse were hauled from quarries.
An obelisk was found of the many in Rome to grace the central square. Massive statues were brought in.
Then came the war.
The great olympiad of culture was forgotten while the world bled.
Only a few curious German and then Allied soldiers ever wandered out to the weed-grown site to stare at the abandoned massive statue heads and slabs of marble, great foundations and debris.
Italy had no time to think of the place in the difficult days after the war.
But in 1952 a plan was elaborated to finish the work and turn the quarter into a permanent world exposition center, museums, government offices and restful gardens.
Most people smiled when the Rome government also decided to finish another Mussolini dream—a subway.
It was finished in 1954, a marble-lined gem of construction running under the historic ruins of Rome from the central station out to the "EUR."
