Opening Events Tomorrow for Orange County Plaza
Three of Garden Grove's leading clergymen and two of its most respected and honored citizens will play major roles in Thursday's dedication of the 45-acre multi-million dollar Orange County Plaza, northwest corner of Chapman and Brookhurst, whose 60 stores make it the largest shopping center in the county.
Invocation and blessing will be presented by the Rev. Thomas W. Gilleapie, First Presbyterian Church; Father Michael J. Murphy, St. Columban's Catholic Church; and the Rev. T. Eugene Coffin, Alamitos Friends Church.
Messages of good wishes will be read from Jewish temple officials who will be observing the first holy day of their Passover and unable to attend.
Dr. Charles C. Violett, 96, and until his retirement two years ago, the oldest practicing physician in Orange County, will raise the United States flag on the mall in front of the J. C. Penney Co. store, while Cmdr. Donald A. Gary, USC (Ret.), one of the county's two Congressional Medal of Honor winners, will lead the pledge of allegiance, and the Rancho Alamitos High School band will play.
Samuel G. Lampel, president of the Plaza merchants' association, will introduce developers Donald Shanedling, Harry Rinker and Bill Tietz, as well as civic and political dignitaries who have signified their intention of attending the ceremonies, which will be held first on a stage in front of Penney's, and will be repeated, except for the flag-raising, on a second stage in front of Thriftimart in the three-year old section of the shopping center.
At 9:30 a.m., the stores will open their doors for visitors, with many of the merchants, including Penney's, Woolworths, Western Auto Supply, GallenKamp's and others, unveiling their new stores for the first time.
can Airlines to Phoenix, a portable stereo record player, and each week for five weeks, two $100 savings bonds.

In addition, individual stores will hold open house during Thursday's opening, with many serving coffee, and most offering special prizes including sewing machines, vacuums, lawn sets, power mowers, bicycles, draperies, radios, record players, plastic pools, luggage, autographed records, merchandise certificates and groceries.
Wandering minstrels, an giant on stilts with free bells for the kiddies, and famous Oldsmobile "horseless car" and the KWIZ remote mobile will be featured throughout day.
Highlight of Saturday's ties will be the "baby pear contestants in the Plaza's 'baby president' contest." Rancho band, a sub-teen show, and the man on still precede the "baby march" 3 p.m. for the national "baby nation convention" of the contest.
Anaheim Firm Offers New Service Policy
Positive protection against the biggest headache of motoring will be offered by an Anaheim firm, it was just announced.
Shipkey and Pearson, Goodyear Tire Dealers, 420 W. Center, are offering this service in writing to motorists.
The new Service Police says that your wheels keep turning, or Shipkey and Pearson will pick up the tab.
"We believe that it is the strongest backing of a tire product ever offered," firm partner Pearson said.
The service policy applies to four types of Goodyear tires when they are equipped with the Captive - Air Steel Cord Safety Shield, developed and perfected by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
The shield, which serves as a built-in spare tire, practically eliminates the possibility of a flat tire or roadside delay. With its steel cord armoring, the shield can blunt or block almost any puncturing object which pierces the tire's outer casing, thus preventing it from going through the inner shield.
In case of a puncture, or blow-out — or any kind of damage with these shields protecting you — the motorist does not stop, but keeps on going on the air in the safety shield or inner tire.

Commuters Late As Trains Retain Schedule
HARTFORD, Conn. (UPI) — Commuters, not the trains, were late during one winter snowstorm here.
A spokesman for the New Haven Railroad said commuters complained of missing trains after hearing on the radio that the trains were running more than an hour late. The spokesman explained that the trains were late—for a while—but when they got back on schedule, the commuters didn't.

Highlight of Saturday's festivities will be the "baby parade" from Thriftmart to Penney's for contestants in the Plaza's second baby president" contest. TV Westerns Driving Women To Theaters
NEW YORK (UPI) — Motion picture theater attendance is continuing to increase over last year, according to a survey by Sindlinger & Co., business analysts, and one of the factors is that "women are going back to the movies in increasing numbers."
Sindlinger gave two reasons for more movie - going by women—most of the major pictures released during the past five years held annual interest for them and TV Westerns are sending more women away from their home screens.
Soap Box Derby Began As One-City Activity
When the first racer crosses the finish line at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, on August 16, 1909, the All-American Soap Box Derby will have marked its 22nd anniversary as a community and youth service of international importance.
Actually, the All-American Soap Box Derby is the end result of what started out twenty-five years ago to be one man's idea for a one-city activity. Today, it has grown to be international in scope. The record-setting 1958 program was held in 160 cities including West Germany, Alaska, Canada, Venezuela and the Philippines. In Germany alone more than 100 cities and towns had some 10,000 participants for the honor of giving to Akron for the All-American finals.
This is indeed a contrast to first All-American Soap Box Derby in 1934 when 34 American sent boys to Dayton to compete the event.
Southern California has been represented with national charm twice in the history of the American Gilbert Klecan of Deligo won the honors in 1946 Richard Kemp of Los Angeles came in first in 1954. Last year, All-American Champ James Mofuncie, Indiana, barely no out Honnie Ashley of Lakewood who finished a very close second.
