You ARE a Little Square by Abigail Van Buren DEAR ABBY: I am a single man, age 35 and I live in a rooming house. There is a young woman (about 27) who has a room in the back apartment; mine is in front and there is a bathroom in between us. She has a clothesline strung up in the bathroom and every night she washes out her underwear and hangs it up. I get up first and see these things in the bathroom every morning. She must have only two sets of underwear because one set is on the line every single morning. Both sets are getting very ragged so I guess that's all she has. Would it be too personal a gift for me to give her some new underwear? I am not very forward and it might be a good way to get better acquainted. SQUARE SHOOTER DEAR SQUARE: A gift of intimate apparel would be out of order. If you want to know her better, engage her in conversation casually like a gentleman Duz. Good Lux. DEAR ABBY: Our daughter is 19 and so is her boy friend. Her father and I are worried about the car this boy takes our daughter out in. He has a 1934 Ford with a big Oldmobile motor in it. My husband is a mechanic by trade and he says the motor is too heavy for the car. Also, this boy puts his car together any old way and my husband says it is a wonder it stays in one piece for an hour. The minute we criticize this boy or his car our daughter bursts into tears. Do we have a right to say anything or not? DEAR PARENTS: It's the DUTY of parents to keep their children safe. If your husband feels that this boy's car is dangerous, he should tell the BOY (not your daughter) and if possible, help him to put something safer together. DEAR ABBY: I am in love with a wonderful girl and want to ask her to marry me but I cannot. I have a good job, no debts, a nice bankroll, and a record. A few years ago I was a wild teen-ager and started playing around with marijuana and before long I was addicted to heroin. I spent six months in a hospital at Lexington, Ky., then I was sentenced to a Federal Correction Institute for 3 months followed by two years parole. I paid for my mistake, "kicked" the habit and haven't been in trouble since. My girl and her family know of my record so that's no problem, but I am constantly being picked up by the police for investigation. Can I ask a wife to put up with this? May be your answer will help others in the same boat. There are lots of us. SHADOWED DEAR SHADOWED: If you love her enough you can ask her—and if she loves you enough she will accept you for what you are today. If you behave yourself long enough, you won't be "picked up" forever. Higher Costs Cancel Family Income Gains WASHINGTON (UPI) — Hall of the nation's families had income above $5,050 in 1958—a $20 increase from 1957's median family income, the Commerce Department reported today. But the increase was more than cancelled out by rising prices—the early part of 1958 so that pachasing power of the families clined slightly. Averaging developments for years 1947-57, the department said that real, after-tax income family has risen about 1% per cent a year. One reason for the steady provement was the growing portion of wives who work. The report also showed that was no change in 1958 in income distribution. Fourteen per cent all families and single persons had incomes under $2,000 and 1 per cent fell into the $10,000 more category. The bulk of the income fell in the middle categories-per cent in the $2,000-$3,999 group 25 per cent between $4,000 and $5,999 and 17 per cent earn $6,000-$7,999. How conclusive is a blood test? Just what would one prove? Please give me an authoritative reply soon. Peak Cement Earnings Totalled by Permanente OAKLAND (UPI) — Permanente Cement Co. today reported record first quarter sales of $16,272,000 compared with $11,563,000 in the first three months of 1958. Now days we think nothing of picking up the sports pages and reading of some gal breaking a golf, track, swimming, bowling, some other sport record, but it wasn't always so... During Civil War days the game of croquet arrived in the U.S. from jolly old England, and it marked the first time the ladies participated in an outdoor sport. Because of the slow pace and genmosphere it became-known as the "courting game." The ladies have now moved into the bowling centers. They participate in the game on an equal basis with the men, rolling in four tournaments, in leagues and in match games. Since bowling in the ALL family sport, it provides entertainment for everyone from the kiddies to the grandfolks. Plans show an administrative unit with offices clubroom and general purpose room as the first unit to be constructed on the north part of the hillside property. Additional units to the southeast will include an athletic area and swimming pool. YMCA officials said the center would also be available during daylight hours on weekdays for use by senior citizens. Speaking of mixed leagues, we'd like to controtulate the Linbrook-sponsored team made up of Mr. and Mrs. Syd Hallamore and Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Westlake, who combined to capture the Sunday night Mixed • Four League at WonderBowl. The ladies have taken an extreme interest in our TV Derby, and have been rolling hot 'n heavy in an effort to qualify for a TV appearance. Anyone with a league average may qualify at Linbrook. Try it, loads of fun. Don't forget our instruction courses at Linbrook ladies, four weeks, and everything is free. Next classes start Friday, April 24 at 1 a.m., or April 27 at 1 p.m., Lee Klein instructing. And don't forget, ladies, you're welcome dressed as you are at Lin- Insurance Sales D. Ford.
