I'll Handel This By LEONARD R. HANDEL (Bulletin Sports Editor) Orange County football fans, who are reaching the point of expecting top-rate action on both the high school and junior college levels, are waiting anxiously for the coming North-South Charity game to be sponsored by the Brea Lions' Club. Being played for the benefit of the Orange County Big Brothers Association, this contest figures to be a slam-bang affair with many of the county's top gridders expected to see action. Big day is set for August 14, which is exactly one week prior to the first day slated. Reason for the shift is a highly valid one in that it will be that much further away from the Shrine Game to be played at Memorial Coliseum. The Orange County contest, first of its kind in this area, could easily become a sports highlight in the community. It would be a good bet that attendance will reach a high peak as the contest will bring together the top young football players in the county. Dick Arbenz, who is handling preparations for the game, reports that Anaheim will be well represented which means that local fans will have another reason for being certain of attending. Remember, the skirmish is set for early August. Better plan on going. BOXING BEAT It would seem that the fistic scene in Long Beach is taking a decided turn for the better. Attendance figures, which were rather low at the start of the weekly cards have started to climb rapidly. Those close to the scene are smiling broadly and confidently reporting that the sport just might be here to say in the beach area. Main reason for this has been the fine cards being produced by that group. Promoter Leon Black has been coming up with some slam-bang main events, with Heinz Guder having supplied a good deal of the action. It has been a long time since the fistic world has made any appearance on the local scene and Long Beach is about as close as it has come in this period. True, the Hollywood Legion Stadium brings forth some interesting events, but the bouts are taking place in the wilds of Filmland on Saturday nights. The Long Beach contests, much closer to home, are held during the week, when a large number of people, tired of television, enjoy an occasional evening away from home. The writer believes that a bright future can be seen for the fistic whirl in the beach city. It has been a long time in coming. COLONIST CLASH Let's not forget that Anaheim's Colonists will do battle with Huntington Beach High School Thursday afternoon on the Oilers' diamond. This game could very easily decide the champion of the Sunset League as both clubs are fighting for that post at this time. The Oilers will enter a slight favorite, but it will be up to the locals to knock them off. Probably getting the starting role will be Clint Stark and if he is in good shape the beach city lads will be in for trouble. Time will tell. TELEVISION FIGHT Homeside television fans are going to get a "break" when heavy-weight champion Floyd Patterson defends his crown against Brian London in Indianapolis next month. The "break" is two-fold. First, those watching can turn it off at any time and secondly, it will be a good deal as no monies will be charged for viewing the contest. Actually, this is not too surprising as it would seem rather doubtful that may one possessing all their marbles would pay to see this one on the screen. Anyway, it will be the first chance many have had to see Floyd in action. It's just too bad the opposition isn't a bit better. FURTHER NOTE The fictive whirl has come in for a great deal of criticism in recent months and chances are good that things will not get any better. However, many fans are still complaining that there is no local televising of cards from any Southland arena. Wonder if they are upcoming? Peter Green Carries Honors In South Amateur Golf Go PINEHURST, N. C. (UPI) — Peter Green, an 18-year-old college freshman, and tourney veteran Dave Smith carried co-medalist honors today into the opening round of match play in the 59th annual North and South Amateur golf championship. Green, a University of North Carolina freshman from Franklin, Mich., toured the course Monday in a one-under par 37-34—71 in his first North Carolina tournament appearance. Smith, a more experienced man on the links, came in with a consistent 35-38—71. They were matched against some 140 amateurs on the rain-soaked championship No. 2 course at Pinehurst Country Club. Richard D. Chapman of Pinehurst, defending champion in the North and South, squeezed into the championship flight with a 48-40—78. Arnold Blum of Macon, Ga., fired a 33-39—72 to follow Green and Smith. Kelly Grice of Charlotte finished fourth with a 73 and Cobble Ware of Augusta, Ga. One of the biggest flops of the 1958 season, the 22-year-old side-armer pitched the best game of his career Monday night and beat the San Francisco Giants, 2-1, on Charlie Neal's ninth-inning homer. The victory moved the Dodgers past the Giants into second place in the National League. Drysdale, who beat Sam Jones in a brilliant mound duel, yielded only three hits and struck out 11 to score his second victory of the season. He has struck out 25 batters in 24 innings to lead the league in that department and seems well on his way toward the brilliant season predicted for him a year ago. Drysdale started the season as the overwhelming choice of the experts to be the league's pitcher of the year. But he dropped his first five decisions, didn't win his second game of the season until May 21 and wound up with a thoroughly disappointing 12-13 record for the year. The 6-foot, 6-inch, 210-pound right-hander flashed brilliant form during spring training but suffered a 6-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs in his first start. He bounced back four days later, however, with an eight-hit shutout against the St. Louis Cardinals, so now has yielded 10 hits and one run in his last 18 innings. A crowd of 32,946 gave Drysdale an ovation when he retired the side in the ninth inning and after the game the young pitcher said, "I think that's the greatest game I ever pitched." Willie Mays homered over the short left field fence in the first inning but Drysdale didn't allow another hit until the eighth. The game was the only one played in either league Monday. Portland Wins at Phoenix United Press International Will miracles never cease? The Portland Beavers broke a tradition Monday night that had stood since the demise of the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Seals, winning their first game in history at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The Beavers, who dropped all 11 of their games at Phoenix last season, used the home run to good advantage while making their debut on the winning side of the ledger in Arizona. George Freese belted a pair of two-run homers to get the winners off to an 8-0 lead, but the Giants came back with some long-distance slugging of their own to make it respectable, eventually losing 9-6. Small Turnout A crowd of only 643 saw the Beavers make history. It was the Field of 10 Horses Eye Alamitos Race LOS ALAMITOS — With a field of 10 (plus four also-eligible) assured for Saturday's $25,000 Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Derby, Los Alamitos Railbirds were buzzing today over tomorrow's $3,000 Fullerton Feature at 400 yards. In this one, a typical Saturday headliner on a Wednesday, 11 of the fastest sprinters in training were named through the entry box yesterday and the hit surpriser among 'em was none other than the sport's champion two-year-old money-winner of all time, Marlon Seward's Miss Louton. Already assured a berth in the derby off her third best time - 22.17 seconds - in last Saturday's two trials, the entry of Miss Louton in tomorrow's overnight feature immediately occasioned more than a little surprise among dyed-in-the-wool quarter horsemen. Such a move in thoroughbred racing would be tantamount to Round Table going in a race two or three days before the Santa Anita Handicap. But in this straightaway sport, it's all in a day's work and Miss Louton's performance in Saturday's trial indicated that one more sharp effort tomorrow would put her on edge for the big derby jackpot. Completely disregarding the age barrier, owner Seward also has picked a pretty stiff assignment for a rugged little fily who last year won 10 of her 13 starts, including the richest quarter horse stakes in history — the $32,000 New Mexico Futurity at Ruidoso Downa. In her initial start this year, Miss Louton was woefully short, being beaten three-quarters of a length by Missle Bar before coming back with a sharply-improved third last Saturday to Triple Lady in the second division of the Derby Trials. But while she is no cinch to bound under the wire in front in tomorrow's Fullerton, going against the likes of such handicap stars as Pap, Easter Maiden, Vannearv, Quick M. Silver, Cute Trick, Pokey Pat, No Butt and First Call certainly should get Miss Louton revved up for her derby assignment. Post time tomorrow will be 1:30 and as for Saturday's 440-yard Derby classic, about the other details to be determined is Thursday's draw for post positions and a decision by jockey Ken Chapman on the only known conflict in riding assignments. Chapman, it seems, is confronted with the problem of coming back on either Dale (Wells Fargo) Robertson's Antlers Trade or Kemer Chaffin's Missile Bar, both of which he rode in the Derby Trials. If he guesses wrong, Chapman will find solace in that Eddie Arcaro also made the wrong choice some years back, when he picked Devil Diver over Kentucky Derby winner Shut Out. If it will help Chapman reach a decision, here are the official individual times that determined Saturday's line-up: Triple Lady 22.09, Pana Bar 22.16, Miss Louton 22.17, Missile Bar 22.20, Tidy Too 22.21, Lip Request 22.9', Antlers Trade 22.30, El Diablito 22.37, Jet Sue 22.41 and Lasse's Pride 22.45. Also-eligible — Outrider 22.56, Fame Goldquest 22.56, Eagle Flight 22.57 and King Rastus 22.58. While Chapman pondered over his Derby status, jockey Efrain Garza seized the opportunity to boot home a riding double and gain a 10-7 lead over Kenny in the rider standings. Efrain, once a good winner aboard thoroughbreds at Belmont Park, won 'em both for the same stable, Kaufman and Paxton — Tinky's Beauty at four dollars and Dusty Bar for $9.90. Hard-working Harry Holcomb hustled home I. F. Sumrall's Tee Beau to register a $43 surprise in the day's 350-yard Brea feature, zipping under the wire in 18.1 to outfinish Dyna Van and Dandy Bar. Clips Giants on Neals’ Home Run By ALEX KAHN United Press International LOS ANGELES (UPI) — The cheers still were resounding today for Don Drysdale’s superlative pitching performance Monday night as the Dodgers beat the Giants, 2-1, in a thriller witnessed by 22,946 fans. Both Drysdale and Manager Walt Alston agreed it was the 22-year-old hurler’s greatest game and even Bill Rigney, manager of the Giants, agreed it was a brilliant effort although he liked the work of Sad Sam Jones’ defeat. For tonight’s continuation of the series, the Dodgers called on Stan Williams to take the mound while for the Giants it was Stu Miller, both having 0-0 records, although both have worked this season. Neal Hits Decisive Blow Charlie Neal’s homer in the bottom of the ninth Monday night was the Dodgers’ margin of victory. The slim second baseman said “it was the greatest thrill” of his life when he caught one of Jones’ curves and hit it to left-center field almost in the same spot where Willie Mays had homered in the first inning to give the Giants their single tally. From that point on, Drysdale retired 21 men in order until Andre Rodgers slammed a ball to shortstop on what was first scored as an error and after the game changed to a hit, giving Drysdale a three-hitter instead of a two-hit effort. In the ninth, Jackie Brandt beat out a grounder that could have been an easy out had Norris Smallest turnout since Phoenix entered the PCL last season. In other night games, Salt Lake City shaded Seattle, 8-7, and league-leading Spokane defeated San Diego, 7-3, before a meager crowd in the Southern California city. Sacramento scored 11 runs in the first two innings, then held on for an 11-8 win over Vancouver before 2007 fans in an afternoon game at Edmonds Field. Salt Lake collected 11 hits off our Seattle pitchers and withstood grand slam home run by the Braiders' Ted Tappe in the eighth post its first win of the season. Basel, winner of four straight battles at the auditorium, has had little trouble in outboxing the opposition so far. Nicknamed the Baby Faced Phantom by harbor district fans the fragile looking dutchman is unquestionably one of the cleverest ringman in the business. However, there is some doubt as just how well he can stand up under punishment, and the fact that he is a light puncher puts him in jeopardy each time he climbs in the ring. Duarte although he lacks the speed of the agile German, makes up for this deficit with a hefty punch, and the ability to absorb an unusual amount of punishment. Bout Asked After looking at Basel win over Frankie Bravo last week, he asked Promoter Leon Black to put him in with Edgar. The Latin is confident that he can halt Basel's win streak the same as Kid Rayo put an end to Basel's stable mate, Karl Heinz Guder two weeks ago. Roy Smith, popular Torrance heavyweight, and Andy Issacs of Los Angeles clash in the six round semi-windup. Smith, a favorite with harbor district fans, is attempting to gain main event recognition, and is favored to use Issacs as a stepping stone toward furthering his ambitions tonight. Three four round bouts should supply plenty of action in the preliminaries. Ricky Palma, crowd pleasing lightweight, meets Torro Martinez of Mexico, making his initial Long Beach appearance. Manuel Cisneros, Bakersfield welterweight, who turned in a slam bang battle last week tackles with Bunchy Bonitas, newcomer from Mexico. Champion Charlie Coe In British Tourney ST.
