Dear Abby...
Keep Her on the Reservation!
by Abigail Van Buren
DEAR ABBY: A few months ago my wife started going out "with the girls." I became suspicious when she stayed out so late and I followed her. She was meeting her boss in a bar. I caused a big scene and the next day I went to the president of the company they worked for and he fired them both. Since then five people have phoned me from the office expressing their sympathy over what happened and all said the affair had been going on for over three years (ever since she started working there). There are children involved on both sides. I forgave my wife for the children's sake but now she wants to get another job to help pay off some bills. Should I let her? I don't think she can be trusted?
WRONGED
DEAR WRONGED: Keep her home for the time being. Nobody changes over night.
DEAR ABBY: I am 13 and have more troubles than my mother. A boy at school took a liking to me and followed me around so much I started calling him my shadow. He begged me to go to an afternoon show with him but I refused. He called me nine times and my mother said, "For goodness sakes, go with him and get rid of him! He liked me all the more. He asked me to take his I.D. bracelet and to tell you the truth I wanted to but my mother would have brained me. He gave me a box of Easter candy and my mother served it to her bridge club and I didn't even get one piece. If I don't accept his I.D. bracelet it will ruin my friendship with his sister who is my age. What should I do?
DEAR TROUBLES: You say if you ACCEPT his I.D. bracelet your mother will "brain" you, and if you DON'T, you'll lose his sister's friendship. I doubt if either your mother or his sister would resort to such drastic measures, but you'd better refuse the bracelet. A girl can live without a girlfriend, but she definitely needs her brains.
DEAR ABBY: I am a divorced woman who is considered very attractive to men. My problem is this: Every man I've gone out with thinks that just because I've been married I have no morals. The first thing they suggest is their apartment or a motel or something like that. I love to dance. I enjoy good clean fun and I'd like to meet a man with the same ideas. Now I ask you, was I born forty years too soon or am I just old-fashioned?
DEAR LONELY: — There is nothing "old-fashioned" about keeping one's self-respect. You are attracting the wrong kind of men. Change bait.
YOUR MONEY'S WORTH
Interest Rates Slated to Rise To Highest Mark in 25 Years
By SYLVIA PORTER
It will be tougher to get a loan as the year rolls on.
It will be more expensive to borrow money for your business or your home or other personal activities this fall than this spring.
The probability is that within a few months the level of interest — meaning the cost of borrowing money — will be at the highest mark in more than a quarter-century.
The likelihood is that the Federal Reserve System soon will turn the credit screws again, act deliberately to cut down the supply of money in the banks available for loans.
The outlook is for a new phase of "tight money" — rivaling the brutal money squeeze of late 1957 — as the business resurgence continues and the supply of money is curtailed while demands for credit climb on all sides.
These are not casual forecasts! Signals are increasing that what I am writing here will become front-page news in coming weeks.
For what is to happen is now being foretold in the vast United States Government securities market — the market in which the U.S. Treasury itself borrows the money it needs to pay off maturing I.O.U's and to cover its current deficit.
This market is the bellwether of all the markets, the place where experts seek clues to trends in borrowing, interest rates, etc. When, for instance, the U.S. Treasury finds it harder and more expensive to borrow money, it means other borrowers, big and little, are going to find it harder and more expensive to borrow too.
Reserve System — which supply and cost of the United States — is do not to expand the supply enough to cover all demand the Federal Reserve is able to get loans easily and chase inflation - breeding forces we courageed, and we'll take new inflation spree.
In its dedicated effort to try its weapon at its compulsive inflation, the Federal Reserve is likely to begin expanding operations to "mop up" fund banking system.
It is also likely to hike rate it charges member loans (the discount rate) spur banks to raise funds charged on loans you.
June the Federal Reserve boosted its own loan rates to a current level; a fourth increase almost any time.
On Monday, May 4, the will tap its market for loans to pay off some maturing It'll pay one of the high since the '30s for what is to be apparent to all.

Income Tax Jump Slated If Sales Tax Repealed
SACRAMENTO (UPI)—Assemblerman Samuel R. Geddes (D-Napa) said he would introduce a bill in the Legislature today to repeal the state sales tax and boost income taxes to make up for the revenue loss.
"I don't think the sales tax is equitable," Geddes said. "It doesn't hit everyone alike. Persons on relief and other state aid have to pay the sales tax. It hurts these people more than it does those who have much more money but who don't necessarily buy more."
The measure would repeal the state's 3 per cent sales and use tax and the Bradley-Burns act which permits an extra 1 per cent sales tax for individual counties.

More Difficult
And right now the Treasury is finding it more difficult to get cash and more costly to borrow.
Tody the Treasury is paying 3½ per cent for 90-day loans against 1½ per cent a year ago. Today it is paying 3.7/8 per cent for one-year money against under over 4 per cent; A year ago the 1½ per cent for identical loans in April 1958. Today the going rate to the Treasury for five-year loans is over 4 per cent; year ago the rate was under 2½ per cent.
At these prices the Treasury can borrow, but investors aren't eager to lend to the Government. And for two vital reasons.
On one hand, the strong business upswing so clearly under way now makes it certain that demands for loans are going to swell.
The boom in homebuilding assures a record demand for mortgage money. The spurt in retail sales will force businessmen to borrow to restock their shelves with goods. The decisions of corporations the nation over to hike their spending for plants and equipment signal a rising demand for capital to finance the plants and equipment. The revival in the auto market means more loans on autos.
The comeback in sales of appliances, furniture, etc., spells more demand for all sorts of installment loans. States and cities are borrowing all-time peak amounts. And the U.S. Government is competing heavily and constantly for cash as well.

Reserve System — which controls the supply and cost of credit in the United States — is determined not to expand the supply of money enough to cover all demands. For the Federal Reserve is convinced that if all who want to borrow can get loans easily and cheaply, inflation - breeding forces will be encouraged, and we'll take off on a new inflation spree.
In its dedicated effort to use every weapon at its command to curb inflation, the Federal Reserve is likely to begin expanding its operations to "mop up" funds in the banking system.
It is also likely to hike again the rate it charges member banks for loans (the discount rate) and thus spur banks to raise the rates charged on loans to you. Since last June the Federal Reserve has boosted its own loan rate three times to a current level of 3 per cent; a fourth increase may come almost any time.
On Monday, May 4, the Treasury will tap its market for $4.5 billion to pay off some maturing I.O.U's. It'll pay one of the highest rates since the '30s for the cash. Then the signal of what is to come will be apparent to all.

Challenge Too Much For Professional Safe Man
LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Ralph Wolfgang Clark, 67-year-old professional safecracker who takes pride in his work, said today he knew what went wrong on the "job" that led to his arrest.
"I worked too long," the mild-mannered, gray-mustached Clark said from his jail cell. "Should have abandoned the project after 10 minutes. But it was a fine safe! Such a challenge! And I had caused the job well—I knew there was $15,000 in it."
Clark was absorbed in his work at a union office during the pre-dawn hours Sunday when he suddenly became aware that two police officers were standing behind him, guns drawn.
"Please, gentlemen!" he said.
