Early Magnolia School Days Is Topic at Study Club Meet
The Magnolia Study Club enjoyed an interesting talk on early Magnolia School Days by Miss Mattie Lou Maxwell at their meeting held at the home of Mrs. Ada Fellbaum, 408 S. Indiana.
Mrs. Ethel Moffit was co-hostess.
The idea for Magnolia School now renamed Mattie Lou Maxwell School, was born in 1894, says Miss Maxwell, when a test school was set up in a tent with 35 pupils. The school was started by Andrew Baker who came from Missouri in 1892 to ranch 40 acres of land in the area between Ball Rd. and Orange.
There were six children in the family and Baker soon found it a difficult chore to transport them to school in Los Alamitos via horse and wagon. The tent school housed 50 pupils in its second year and proved successful enough to warrant expansion the following year.
In 1896, Timothy Carroll donated five acres for the new school building on what is now Magnolia Ave. between Orange and Broadway (part of the Stearns Rancho years ago). Fifty loads of cactus were hauled off the property before the school could be built. Mrs. Baker named it Magnolia School after her favorite flowering tree and later, the street was named for the school. The new school's first teacher was a Miss Becket.
Old Street Names
Miss Maxwell went on to describe the naming of other old streets in the area, named for the lone ranchers who lived on them. Among those named were Ball Rd., Nutwood, Gilbert and Hansen. Orange County, once part of Los Angeles County, was established in 1889 with the help of San Francisco, stated Miss Maxwell, in order to prevent Los Angeles from outstripping it in size.
Following the talk, members of the Study Club reminisced about their own early days and showed pictures. The Magnolia Club, with members of from 18 to 50 years standing, is an outgrowth of the first Magnolia School Parent-Teacher groups, formed when children grew up and left school.
The session closed with the nomination of this year's officers for re-election.
