B-2—Anaheim (Col.) Bulletin Friday, April 17, 1959 FIGHT STARTS EARLY Lane Risks High Rank In Hollywood Tonight Kenny Lane, the number one lightweight contender, risks his lofty rating against fourth ranked Johnny Busso in a 10 round national TV bout tonight at Hollywood Legion Stadium. Because of television, the match will start at 7 p.m., preceded by a four rounder at 6:30 p.m. Regular prices of $3.95, $2.95, $1.95 and $1.25 will prevail. West Coast Relays Gets First Entry John "Jack" Donaldson, B. S., A. M., M.S., Ph.D. today was the first official entrant in the 33rd annual West Coast Relays to be held in Ratcliffe Stadium, Fresno on May 9. Dr. Donaldson, an assistant professor of Physics at Fresno State College, filed his entry blank for the open discus competition. Donaldson competed in the discus at Rice Institute and was the Southwest Conference champion. He was also the national A.A.U. champion in 1945 with a throw of 151'2". The platter tossing professor holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Rice and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Yale University. Lane, 26-year-old southpaw from Muskegon, Mich., will be making his first start of the year. He last saw action on New Year's Eve in Miami, decisioning Carlos Ortiz. Kenny has an overall record of 55 wins against five losses. He has been campaigning as a pro since 1953. Is Hopeful The crafty Midwestern is hopeful a victory over Busso will insure another title meeting with Champion Joe Brown. Jack (Doc) Kearns, Lane's veteran manager, says he will guarantee the titleholder $75,000. Brown won a disputed decision over Lane last July 31 in Houston. Busso, a native New Yorker, is also shooting for another title match with Brown. Johnny dropped a close 15 - rounder to Brown in his last effort, Feb. 11 in Houston. Tall for a lightweight (5'9"), the 24-year-old Busso holds a non-title win over Brown. Johnny also has defeated Carlos Ortiz, Larry Boardman, Orlando Zulueta and Lahouari Godifh. He has a 35-8-1 slate. Donaldson competed in the discus at Rice Institute and was the Southwest Conference champion. He was also the national A.A.U. champion in 1945 with a throw of 151.2". San Antonio Relays April 24-25. A pair of amazing teenagers high jumpers, Paul Stuber of Flower and Joe Faust of City, threaten to steal the light in the high school division of the First Annual Mt. San Antonio Relays April 24-25. Thirty-one CIF teams thus are entered in the prep divider and there’ll be such boy work as Dale Story, the 4:15.1 O-miler; Leroy Neal, Fullerton dance star; Larry Canova, flower halfmiler and Sprinter Moore of La Habra, but the light rightfully falls on the pa-jumping jacks. Relays Director Hilmer thinks so highly of Stuber. Faust that he has moved up to prep big jump to Saturday afternoon from Friday so that fans can appreciate what Aca has coming up in the future. Last year when a 16-year Stuber jumped 6-9 to place se- to Charlie Dumas in the Nat-AAU’s and earned a trip to cow on the USA team for the sian dual meet. Among the young Stuber kept off the Aca can team was John Thomas Boston, sensation of the in-season. Despite his youth Stuber did falter in Moscow, clearing the same height as Dumas the Russian Igor Kashkarov. Faust was only 15 last when he beat a field of co- and ex-college stars in the di-AAU championships at Occidental. By OSCAR FRALEY United Press International NEW YORK (UPI) — Clyde Batty, who walked into a cage, all of lions and tigers with the clomb of a man in the Easter grade, once was asked whether there was anything he feared. "Yes," he replied, "lions and tigers." And that's the way it is with black-cheeked, blue-eyed Jim Rathmann, one of the world's top auto racing daredevils. Mild-mannered Jim is the man who last June won the Miglia de Monza in Italy with a world record average of 166.788 miles per hour, which means speeds of 195 miles an hour on the straight-a-ways; has driven 3,870 competitions miles at Indianapolis and currently is looking forward to his fifth ride in the famed 500 on Memorial Day. Jim's afraid of automobiles. "Don't let anybody tell you that they aren't scared as they wait for the start of a race," he says quietly. "You think of everything that could happen and you've got nose butterflies real bad until they cut you loose and the race on. After that you're too busy be scared." Starts At 17 Jim and his brother, Dick, who three-years his senior, are known as The Racing Rathmanns. But in this case it was the elder brother who followed in the younger's footsteps. "I started when I was 17," says Jim, who is 30 now. "At first it was hot-rodding and then just graduated into midgets and big cars. Dick started two years later I did." His brother, you may recall, was involved in the first lap pile-o at Indianapolis last year which claimed the life of handsome Pat Connor. Jim was running 15th at the start and whizzed past his brother's battered car in fifth position after that spectacular crash. "Man, was I worried," he said. I knew it was Dick's car and it was several laps before my pit signalled me that he was all right. But you have to keep right going anyhow, even at a moment such as that." Jim will drive Sunday in the 90-mile Indianapolis Car event at downtown Indianapolis, backed into an alley to turn around and was attacked by a gang of young hoodlums. One threw a brick and Rathmann was struck on the eye. It required 13 stitches and scratched him from the race. Jim trains assiduously for the 500, working every night with a special weighted driving wheel to strengthen his arms and watching his diet. You can imagine how demanding it is of the driver when you consider that in the 500 he will wear out nine special Firestone racing tires, enough rubber to carry a passenger car 50,000 miles. But while he has to be an iron man on May 30, until then he'll treat himself with the caution of a hypochondriac. "I'm scared I'll get hurt," he said. "And I'll stay that way until we barrel into the first turn."
