B-8—Anoheim (Cal.) Bulletin Friday, April 17, 1959 Sheinwold on Bridge By ALFRED SHEINWOLD U.S. Masters Team Champion K.O. Declarer With Uppercut It's hard to see how South can be defeated at his fine game contract. The trumps break normally, and he should lose only two spades and a diamond. However, good defense will floor him. North dealer East-West vulnerable NORTH ♠ J 9 4 2 ♥ Q 7 5 ♦ K J 10 3 ♦ A 3 WEST ♠ A K Q 10 6 ♠ B 5 ♥ J 8 4 ♥ 10 2 ♥ A 4 ♥ B 7 5 ♥ J 10 8 7 5 2 SOUTH ♠ 7 3 ♥ A K 9 6 3 ♥ Q 9 6 2 ♥ K Q North East South West Pass Pass -1 ♥ 1 ♥ 1 NT Pass 2 ♥ Pass 4 ♥ All Pass Opening lead — ♥ K When this hand was played recently in the annual Intercollegiate Bridge Championships, many players got to the fine game in hearts. In a few cases, the West player found the best line of defense. West leads the king of spades and continues with the queen. Then he should lead a low spade some good by ruffing high rather than low. When East ruffs the third spade with the ten of hearts, South's game goes out of the window. He must over-ruff, and then West has sure trump trick with his jack of hearts. One Last Try South can make one last try for his contract. He should realize what West has in mind and should therefore read West for J-x-x of hearts. South should over-ruff the ten of hearts with the ace and should lead a low heart casually towards dummy. An alert West must play the eight of hearts to force out dummy's queen. But if West carelessly plays the four of hearts, declare finesses dummy's seven and steals the game right back. This didn't happen very often in the 176 participating colleges. Once or twice, however, East ruffed with the deuce instead of the ten of hearts, allowing South to make the game despite West's excellent defense. Daily Question Partner bids one heart in third position, and the next player passes. You hold: Spades J 9 4 2 Hearts Q 7 5 Diamond K I 10 3 Clubs A 3. What do you say? Simpson has announced certification of $1,105,700 for support of child care centers during the last three months of the current school year. A total of $4,688,365 was apportioned by the legislature to maintain the centers during this school year. A balance of $105,165 remains and will be used for the final apportionment. Child care center school districts to serve the 28,000 children of parental work or who are undertaking veterans training or fulfilling an essential job. The program, first authorized by the legislature in 1946, is financed by parent fees, state funds and some district support. The National Education Association says at least 1,200 pupils and 40 teachers are needed to support the services a modern school should provide. Divorces Filed: Ruth N. Sierra vs. Lee W. Mary B. Elusive Average Man Sought by Business NEW YORK (UPI) — The so-called "average American consumer" is getting harder to define and manufacturers may have to probe his environment and the social and personal forces which direct his life, goals and ambitions, a marketing study points out. Now that a day laborer can earn as much as a professional, income group breakdowns — once an accurate index — do not necessarily indicate what type of furniture, appliances or rogs will be bought, it was noted.
