WILL EXHIBIT AT SHOW — Looking over one of the objects of handiwork made on homemade machinery are (from left) Elven Olmstead and his wife, Daisy, who is holding a stone sphere. The perfect sphere is part of a collection made by Olmstead which will be on display at the Orange Coast Mineral and Lapidary Society's display open Saturday and Sunday at the Orange County Fair Grounds in Costa Mesa. Elven has been disabled for two years and has turned to rock polishing and cutting for a hobby. With the help of his attractive wife, the couple's collection of polished rocks of gem-like quality has been increasing. Theme of the show is Nature's Jewel Box and many fascinating specimens will be on display as well as a working exhibit. Coast Mineral and Lapidary Show To be Presented This Weekend Friday Deadline To File for Trustee FULLERTON — Deadline f Coast Mineral and Lapidary Show To be Presented This Weekend “Nature’s Jewel Box” is the theme chosen by the Orange Coast Mineral and Lapidary Society for their show to be held April 18 and 19 in the Agricultural Building at the Orange County Fair Grounds at Costa Mesa. To carry out this idea, a jewel box is being fashioned of blue calcite from Crestmore Quarry at Riverside. Special exhibits will feature a 30,000 carat blue sapphire from Mozambique, South Africa, through the courtesy of Harry Derian of Los Angeles. There will be faceted and cabachon cut stones, many set in handcrafted jewelry, mineral specimens, Indian artifacts, fossil plant and animal life, petrified wood and all phases in the mineral and lapidary field. After viewing the many interesting specimens, the natural thing is to know how the cutting and polishing is done so there will be a working exhibit in charge of Mabel Grouard, whose unusual pieces have been used on the cover of the Lapidary Journal, and who will demonstrate stone carving. Another feature sure to attract much attention will be a very large oval shaped Septarium found at Laguna Beach. Everyone will be invited to guess its weight, with a polished cabachon stone to be given to the one guessing the nearest to the correct weight. In addition to the exhibits by the more than 200 members of the club, members of many other similar clubs in the area will be adding to the array of beauty and education to be found in Nature’s Jewel Box. The show will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The admission is free and there is plenty of free parking available. A snack bar featuring homemade cakes will be available. At their April meeting, George C. Williams, assistant superintendent in charge of education, reported that Centralia district has been asked to supervise the "Little red schoolhouse," and set up a display which will represent all elementary schools in the county. Planning and executing the arrangement, according to Williams, will be Mrs. Rose Clark, Centralia district's art director. Tentative ideas have already been discussed with Stan Ostling and William Bastendorf from the office of the county superintendent of schools which made the request. Mrs. Clark and principals in each of the district's six schools are also considering work of the pupils in various phases of art which may be entered in the Festival of Arts at Laguna Beach this summer, the board was told. Fund Raising Drive Launched by Olympia FULLERTON — The Olympia, men's service organization at Fullerton Junior College, this week launched a northern Orange County drive, aimed at raising support for the 1960 United States Olympic Games team. The college organization which has regularly supported the same cause in years past with special programs and activities, this year will locate colorful collection containers on merchants' counters throughout northern Orange County. Also they will carry on an intensive fund-raising drive on the college campus. According to Bob Arce of Fullerton, president of the group, "The amateur athletes of the United States who attend the Olympics in Rome must receive all of their expenses from private contribution. We are determined to do our part to see that a full U.S. team is supported."
