THREE DIE The B ANAHEIM PUBLIC LIBRARY Orange County Plain Dealer 32 Pages fn. 3 Sections Vol. XXXVI, No. 219 Anaheim, Calif. Dulles Resigns Quits Following New Outbreak of Cancer in Neck By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI White House Reporter AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) — Presi- New Outbreak of Cancer in Neck By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI White House Reporter AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) — President Eisenhower today sadly announced the resignation of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. The President, with traces of tears in his eyes and a choked up voice, personally met with reporters to tell them that the cancer-stricken secretary was "absolutely incapacitated" to carry on his administrative duties as state secretary and still make policy. The President said Dulles himself made the decision to give up his Cabinet post, after doctors Tuesday reported indications of a third outbreak of cancer, a malignant tumor in the area below Dulles' neck. The President said however that Dulles will continue as the nation's top-level foreign consultant to the White House. Dulles was placed under additional X-ray treatment today for what appeared to be a new break of cancer. The secretary of state returned from a recuperation trip in Florida only last Sunday and was hospitalized again. The President, appearing at a highly unusual news conference in the temporary White House news headquarters at the Richmond Hotel here, said he expected to name a successor to Dulles within a few days. He said there were other government experts on foreign policy in addition to Acting Secretary Christian A. Herter who would be considered for the post. Decided to Resign Before he makes a final decision, the President said he would discuss the matter with Dulles. Seldom have Washington reporters seen Eisenhower as somber as he was today. Grave-faced, he walked into the temporary White House press room and said simply that what he had to say would be brief and that it concerned Dulles. He went on to report that, in view of the medical findings Tuesday when doctors announced evidence of new cancer in Dulles, the secretary had "definitely made up his mind to submit his resignation." Eisenhower, looking somewhat pale and drawn beneath his golf club, CHARRED WRECKAGE — Three persons met instant death when the oil tanker crushed this automobile after being involved in a collision with another vehicle whose driver escaped injury. Grove Boy Hell After Kidnapin GARDEN GROVE — Thanks to the efforts of quick-working Sheriff Deputies a Garden Grove youth was apprehended less than two hours after he kidnapped and robbed a 44-year-old Huntington Park woman. Jerry William Saunders, 16, of 13401 Havenwood St., is in Garden Grove Jail today on charges of kidnapping, armed robbery and auto theft. Police reports show that the boy kidnapped Miss Louise French, a shopping investigator, as she sat in her parked car outside Cole's Market on Garden Grove Blvd. about 2:30 p.m. yesterday. The youth, a stock clerk, entered Miss French's auto and brandished a gun at her and took $36 from her. He then ordered her to move over and he began to drive the vehicle north to Chapman Ave. and then east to the Silverado Canyon area. Miss French told officers that she was not harmed and that Saunders forced her from the car carrying the suspect. Timboe located the Modjeska Canyon and blamed the road as another paused the youth. As Saunders attempted capture he crashed Mis Auto headen into the Sherri ties' car. However, neither ders nor Timboe were injure Saunders was taken into with a fight. State Controller Grave-faced, he walked into the temporary White House press room and said simply that what he had to say would be brief and that it concerned Dulles. He went on to report that, in view of the medical findings Tuesday when doctors announced evidence of new cancer in Dulles, the secretary had "definitely made up his mind to submit his resignation." Eisenhower, looking somewhat pale and drawn beneath his golf course tan, went on to say calmly that Dulles' formal letter would reach him in a day or so and he would then reply to it. Speaking of the medical report, the President said sadly that the findings on Dulles were "not of the kind that make him hopeful." (UPI) — American scientists announced jubilantly today they apparently had achieved a new space triumph with the automatic ejection of the space capsule from the Discoverer II satellite. The Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense said that analysis of radio beacon and telemetry (radio) signals from Discoverer II received since 4 p.m. p.s.t. Tuesday "indicates the capsule did eject from the satellite as predicted." ARPA said that several reports of visual sighting and radio contact from the capsule were being carefully checked to determine the probable landing area in the polar region. Discoverer II's capsule, capable of carrying living organisms in space, failed to eject on radio command from the ground Tuesday because of a malfunction in a timing device. But the automatic mechanism within the 1,600-pound polar-orbiting vehicle was present to unload the capsule on its 12th pass around SPEWING FLAMES — Black smoke reached hundreds of feet in the air and could be seen from all of Orange County from the scene of the fatal accident this morning on the Santa Ana Freeway at Loara St. Here firemen couple hoses together to bring more water to the scene to fight the flames pouring from the ruptured oil tanker. Giant Jet Fighter Slated for Europe By CHARLES CORDDRY United Press International LAS VEGAS (UPI) — The U.S. Air Force in Europe will be reinforced next fall with the giant new F105 fighter plane that can deliver nuclear weapons with pinpoint accuracy while flying much faster than sound. Disclosing this today, pilots selected to fly the 25-ton craft described it as probably the longest-range jet fighter in the world. It can carry a hydrogen or an atomic bomb. Its top speed is about 1,400 miles an hour and it this apparently will be the first fighter in Europe able to fly twice the speed of sound. Its range is at least 1,500 miles and can be extended with extra fuel tanks or inflight refueling. Four crack pilots, including Jal, Claire P. Chennault, son of the famed general who led the Flying Tigers in China, were here from Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., or a bombing demonstration in connection with the First World Congress of Flight. ING CRASH Oil Tanker, Cars Burn on Freeway By Dave Nelson and Carmela Martin A flaming death met three persons on the Santa Ana Freeway near Loara St. this morning after their auto was crushed by an oil tank truck which burst into flames following a collision with another auto. A fourth passenger in the auto is reported near death in Anaheim Memorial Hospital this morning from first, second and third degree burns over his entire body. Four others were treated at Anaheim Memorial Hospital for burns received both in the crash and from rescue efforts at the scene of the tragic accident. Hospital authorities identified the critically burned man as Eugene B. Megill, 30, of 12351 Bluebell Ave., Garden Grove. Additional pictures on page A-6 and B-1. Law enforcement officers and firemen were on the scene until nearly noon today in an effort to identify the dead and clear the massive wreckage from the freeway. All Anaheim police reserves Law enforcement officers and firemen were on the scene until nearly noon today in an effort to identify the dead and clear the massive wreckage from the freeway. Sheriff Deputies and California Highway Patrolmen were rushed to the scene to aid Anaheim police and firemen in caring for the injured. All Anaheim police reserves were also kept on duty during the early morning to aid the officers. Deputy Coroner Richard Shgemake said that identification of the three burned to death in the wreckage of one of the autos would be impossible until the wreckage cooled and the bodies could be removed. Car Hit From Rear First police reports show that a car traveling south on the freeway, driven by Adolph B. Kinkleaar, 41, of Norwalk, was struck from the rear by the loaded oil tanker, operated by Donald L. Curell, 28, of Long Beach. The impact knocked the Kinkleaar auto into a spin and onto the freeway divider. The tanker then traveled across the divider where it was involved in a collision with the auto in which three persons died. The force of the collision caused the tanker to burst into flames which also consumed the crushed auto. A third car, driven by William Molnar, 28, of 2170 Harbor Blvd., Anaheim, apparently sideswiped the flaming wreckage and Molnar suffered first and second degree burns and is undergoing treatment at the hospital to determine the exact extent of his injuries. Swerved Off Freeway Another auto, traveling north on the freeway, driven by Daniel T. Maher, 22, of 426 S. Sycamore St., Santa Ana, swerved to avoid the burning vehicles and nearly ran off the side of the road into a six-foot culvert. As the Maher vehicle burst into flames, the driver and his passenger, Kenneth Skala, 25, of 1128 Casa Grande, Anaheim, managed to leap from the flaming auto and escaped death. A dump truck, also traveling north, also swerved to avoid the scene of the terrible crash and the unidentified driver apparently lost control of his vehicle which then collided with a light standard near the Euclid Ave. overpass. The small dump truck also caught fire but police have not yet determined if the flames were caused by the impact with the light standard or if it caught fire while passing the flaming wreckage. Mesa Dr., and Sterling Ditchey, 36, of 392 N. Batavia St., were credited by police with saving the victim from immediate death. Both Ditchey and Henderson were treated at Anaheim Memorial Hospital for treatment of burns about the hands and face and were later released. Ditchey, who told officers he was celebrating his birthday today, is widely known throughout the county for his photography work and has photographed the scene of many accidents. Another northbound auto, driven by Sheldon Craddock, 37, of 226 Hellotrope Dr., Corona del Mar, also caught fire and he was taken to Anaheim Memorial Hospital for treatment of first degree burns on his face. Police have not yet determined if the Craddock car was involved in any collision or if it caught fire as it traveled past the scene of collision. This was one comment of John Pittillo, the person who notified lice and firemen this morning the terrible smashup on the anta Ana Freeway, in front of the roadway Shopping Center. Pittillo, assistant manager of alphs super market, was one of several store employees who were the building nearest the crash. "At first, all we could see was wall of flames on the freeway — out 200 yards long and maybe 10 feet high. Then I saw a flaming Oldsmobile skid to a stop on the shoulder of the freeway, right here in front of our store. The driver got out and started running down the freeway to get away from the terrible heat. That fellow was still running the last I saw of him, and he may still be running." "About the same time, we saw the driver jump out of his tanker truck and run through the flames to safety. I don't think he was hurt too bad," Pittillo said. "I turned and telephoned the police and fire departments. Then, there was nothing that any human could do to help. We could see the burning fuel pouring from the tank truck and spreading flames all over the inbound freeway lanes — the ones towards Los Angeles," Pittillo said. "We counted three cars burning, and two trucks. The other truck was a gravel truck that must have driven through the fire and crashed into a light pole. It appeared as if it were on fire before it hit the pole." Pittillo said. "Until the police and fire department got here a couple of minutes later, about all that anyone (Continued on Page A-6, Col. 3)
