Dear Abby...
What's It To You, Buddy?
by Abigail Van Buren
DEAR ABBY: You've probably heard of Forever Amber and Jezebel? Well, I know a woman who could give them instructions. She is 40 and has been married four times. She has had kids by this one and that one. She got a quick Mexican divorce by mail order and married a 28-year-old kid. She led about her age and passed off her children as nieces and nephews. Is there any way this kid can retract his marriage if he gets proof that she roped him in with false figures and facts?
THE KID'S FRIEND
DEAR FRIEND: The "kid" is 28 years old and should know enough to see a lawyer if he wants to dissolve his marriage. An annulment is in order if the "bride" misrepresented herself, providing the "kid" wants one.
DEAR ABBY: My little brother is six and I am eleven. He has this ragged blanket which he totes around and sleeps with every night. When we try to take it away from him he cries and says he can't sleep without it. We are at our wits' end. What shall we do? BERNADINE
DEAR BERNADINE: Let him keep the blanket as he wants it. Just be sure it is kept clean.
DEAR ABBY: I am a boy of 15 but my mother thinks I am 5. The other day a girl called and asked my mother if I could come to her birthday dinner. My mother accepted for me and told me I was going. I told my mother I think she should have told the girl it was up to me and then let me accept if I wanted to go, which I would nave done anyway. POW! My mother almost flipped. She said I had no respect for her. Please put a kind word in your column for me if you think I'm right.
KEN
DEAR KEN: Your mother should have given you the opportunity to accept (or refuse) your own invitation . . . BUT, it probably wasn't what you said, it was the way that you said it. HOW did you say it? Think hard.
DEAR ABBY: I am a 19-year-old girl who has fallen in love with a man who is much older, but this is not my problem. He has a 23-year-old son who thinks of me not as a future stepmother but rather as a target for flirtations. He lives with his father now and nothing has been said about where he will live after his father and I are married. I don't want to cause conflict between father and son but

(Escape of the Dalai Lama, god-king of Tibet, from the Chinese Reds to sanctuary in India has dealt Communist China "a tremendous political setback in her imperialistic plans for Central Asia," according to U. S. Supreme Court Associate Justice William O. Douglas. Writing from a background of firsthand knowledge of Tibet, its people and history, he states that so long as the Dalai Lama lives, Red China's efforts to control the Tibetans will be folled. A member of the U.S. Supreme Court since 1939, Justice Douglas is almost equally well known as world traveler, explorer and author.

DEAR DEE DEE: I have some "ideas" and if you suspect your fliance's son also has a few, under no conditions should you three live under the same roof. He's old enough to leave his father's nest and in this case three is definitely a crowd.
CONFIDENTIAL TO MARRYING SOON: If you plan to change him—prepare to be disappointed.

Justice Douglas Tells Of Tibetan History
When China was strong Tibet was forced by Chinese military powers to be subservient. Tibet never has been a part of China, although China always showed Tibet-on Chinese maps as a Chinese province.
For centuries China tried to keep out of Tibet all foreigners who might menace China from the rear. China for decades kept control of Tibet's foreign affairs. And she continued to keep Chinese influence strong by making generous donations to Buddhist monasteries and by pensioning many of the lamas. Since 1700 A. D. Tibet, with no embassies or legations around the world, has been largely dependent on China for international affairs, and became a pawn in Chinese politics.
Even before the Red regime came into power, dalal lamas did not fare well under Chinese suzerainty. During the two or more centuries of her interference in Tibetan affairs, China has acted ruthlessly toward the dalal lamas. She threw some in jail. She had other dalal lamas murdered. Many dalal lamas never lived beyond eighteen years. Until a dalal lama is eighteen, he is under a regent or tutor. When the Chinese mur-

When the Red Chinese armies moved into Tibet in 1931, the Dalai Lama left Lhasa and went to Yatung near the Indian border. In August of that year I was on my way to Yatung to meet him and try to persuade him to quit Tibet and establish his headquarters in India, a country where religions flourish. Before I could reach Yatung the Dalai Lama returned to Lhasa. The pressures on him were great, for Lhasa is to Buddhists pretty much what Rome is to Catholics. Hundreds of Lamas met at Yatung to keep the Dalai Lama from leaving Tibet. Several hundred lay down on the airport so that planes could neither land nor take off. Others manned the pass leading down to India to bar his passage. Finally he consulted an oracle and decided to return to Lhasa.
It was important to the Chinese that the Dalai Lama return to Tibet. For he combines temporal and ecclesiastical power. He is king and also a god to the Tibetan people. As long as he was in Tibet, the Chinese hoped to control the country through him. If he was obstinate and non-cooperative, they would liquidate him. That had been done before to obstreperous and independent Dalai Lamas.
Tibet Long A Troublespot
The Mongols extended their authority over Tibet in 1200 A.D. Actual Chinese rule began in 1700 A.D. China was always nervous about Tibet because Tibet is on China's western border—an area that has long been troublesome. But the Chinese never have maintained their hold on Tibet for long. When China was weak and had serious problems at home or on the international front, Tibet always pushed their Chinese rulers for international affairs, and became a pawn in Chinese politics.
Even before the Red regime came into power, dalai lamas did not fare well under Chinese suzerainty. During the two or more centuries of her interference in Tibetan affairs, China has acted ruthlessly toward the dalai lamas. She threw some in jail. She had other dalai lamas murdered. Many dalai lamas never lived beyond eighteen years. Until a dalai lama is eighteen, he is under a regent or tutor. When the Chinese murdered a dalai lama, they named their puppet as the regent. Through control of the regent they controlled Tibet.
Rule Through Reincarnation
The Buddhists believe in reincarnation. The theory is that when a person dies, his spirit looks around until it finds a suitable newborn babe to possess. The Chinese, through the oracles named by them, had complete control over the process of finding into what baby the spirit of the deceased dalai lama had entered. Acting through their oracles they could pick a child who would best serve their interests. If there was a tribe whose support they wanted, the oracle would conveniently find the new dalai lama among the young boys of that tribe. Perhaps an area was hostile to the Chinese. Then they would placate it by finding the new dalai lama in that region. Or the Chinese might desire to raise the prestige of a particular family in Tibet. That could easily be done by finding the reincarnated dalai lama among its new offspring. The Chinese used this doctrine of reincarnation over and over again to play politics with the high office of the Buddhist Church.
The Panchen Lama is second in the hierarchy of the Buddhist Church. He too is chosen with the help of the oracles who manipulate the theory of reincarnation.
This is why Red China has suffered a tremendous political setback in her imperialistic plans for Central Asia.
EX-FAT LADY FADES AWAY — Dolly Dimple (right) walks on Cloud Nine in San Francisco as she relates one of those typical hard luck stories — about how she got sick, lost weight and couldn’t hold down her old job. Mrs. Dimple, a circus fat lady, suffered a heart attack in 1950 and was told to “diet or die.” Diet she did. She reduced her 555-pounds (left) to 118. Her pre-diet measurements were 6½-7-7 (feet). She now curves the other way at 34-28-36 (inches).

Now there are three great Chevrons to cover the octane needs of all cars far more exactly than two grades possibly can. Everyone gets a better buy because every motorist can get all the power and performance his car can deliver—without paying for higher octane gasoline than it really needs!
For years, just two grades—“regular” and “premium”—have satisfied most car engines. But times have changed. The power demands of today’s highest-compression cars have created a new problem:
If premium grade gasolines are continually increased in octane just for these powerful cars, millions of premium-users (whose cars do not require extra octane) will be paying for “the other fellow’s” power needs.
That’s why we created an entirely new grade for the most powerful cars on the road. Now—whatever car you drive—there’s a clean-burning gasoline that exactly fits your power needs (and your pocketbook!) You’ll find it only at the sign of the Chevron.
