Cub Pack 126 Launches Two-Month Drive for Needy; 'Being a Helpful Scout' Is Theme
"Being a Helpful Scout" is the theme during the next two months for Cubs of Pack No. 126.
The 20-man Pack committee has announced an all-out drive to collect used toys, clothing and other usable items during April and May. Due to the ever-present enthusiasm of the parents and Cubs of the huge Anaheim pack, the drive is expected to yield a full truckload of items helpful to needy families and will be distributed through a local Goodwill Agency.
In releasing plans for the two-month drive, Cubmaster Carl Kiefer stated that the drive calls for a big measure of help from each of the more than 100 Cub Scouts in the Pack. Cubs will disburse large collection bags after Den Meetings during April and May and are asked to help their parents fill them to the top.
Collection of the items will then call for the help of the Pack parents who are asked to bring the filled bags with them as they assemble with their Cubs at the monthly Pack Meetings to be held on April 15 and May 20. A truck will be conveniently spotted at the Walt Disney School when the Pack meets, and the collected items can be loaded onto the truck at Pack Meeting time.
Liaison work between this collection point and the Goodwill Agency will be under the general direction of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Smock.
Set Health Classes
Community leaders engaged in public health and welfare are speaking to the health education classes of Mrs. Helen D. Bowman at Orange Coast College this semester.
Among those bringing special information to the students are Mrs. Martha Buss, OCC school nurse; Donald Hufhiness, director of health education, Orange County Health Department; Sgt. William Wallace, in charge of the narcotic squad, Orange County Sheriff's Office.
Mrs. S. Jack Gets Post on Hospital Board
Mrs. Samuel Jack, wife of General Samuel Jack, commanding general of Air FMF Pac, El Toro Marine Base, was elected to membership on the board of directors of Family Service Association of Orange County at the board's April meeting in St. Joseph Hospital, Orange.
At the same time, the board authorized executive director John P. Turner to increase the staff by employment of three part-time case workers, each to work one day a week; also additional part-time clerical help.
Turner reported that 92 applications for family counseling were received during March, the largest in the agency's four-year history. These applications, said Turner, involved 154 adults and 295 children.
The board authorized Turner to attend the National Conference on Social Welfare to be held in San Francisco May 24-29, also Family Service group meetings held in connection with the conference.
Registrations Open For Slimming Classes
Women wishing to trim down their figure for the bathing suit season can take advantage of the Slim and Trim Classes offered by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department.
The series will be held once a week for six weeks, beginning April 16, at the Brookhurst Junior High School.
SOUTH RISES AGAIN — Bill Wheelan, attired in "Southern Gentleman" costume and a speaker on the affirmative in a debate by Orangeview Junior High School students, the topic — "Did the South Have the Right to Fight the Civil War," is seen at the lec-tern as he becomes verbose in driving home his "yes" points. On the team with him were Bobbye Stein, Tom Tracy, Bill Ross, Annala Santalattil, Maddie Ortner and Bill Bell. Negative stand was taken by Santa Pica, Lynn Holwick, Bob Bayer, Walter Hern, and Ronnie Grock. The South side was judged winner.

Two Vagabonds To Sing at OCC Wednesday
Vagabonding troubadors who paid their way with singing and guitar playing across Europe and Africa will entertain Orange Coast College students at their 11 a.m. assembly on Wednesday. The public is invited to attend.
Rohn Engh of Ocean City, Md., and Rudi Thurau of Hamburg, Germany met in a tavern in Rotterdam, Guitars, folk music, a motor scooter and a desire to tour the world soon made the two young men fast friends.
From that meeting their wanderings and them into a Berber's hut during a cloudburst in Morocco, a sandstorm in the Sahara and araft trip down the Niger River.
The pair is now continuing their motor scooter jaunt around the world with plans for the next three years which will take them to Mexico, Latin America, Australia, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe again.
Engh and Thurau will show movies of their adventures and play and sing folk songs which they gathered during their journeys.
The U.S. Office of Education estimates that nearly one million teachers are employed to operate public school libraries.
Chapman to Honor Handel’s Death
A program in observance of the 200th anniversary of the death of composer George Frederick Handel will be presented by the Chapman College Music Department tonight at 8:15 in the college auditorium. Opening the program will be the “Water Music” played by the Chapman Symphony Orchestra.
Senior Linda Tennis, soprano, will sing two arias. The Organ Concerto No. 10 will be played by Instructor Ronald M. Huntington with the symphony orchestra and the Flute Sonata No. 5 will be played by Senior Cecile Ouellet.
Three choral works — "Jesus, Sun of Life, My Splendor," "Hallelujah, Amen," and "Draw the Tear from Hopeless Love" — will be sung by the Chapel Choir and Madrigal Singers.
Instructor Norman Thompson, pianist, will play the Suite No. 14 and the program will be concluded with the Concert Choir singing the "Alleluijah Chorus" from "The Messiah."
