Today’s Better Home Began At Century’s Turn One man began an era of architecture. That man was Frank Lloyd Wright. A genius, Wright was well-known in Europe and Asia before the American public, too used to being like the Jones, realized it was here in this country the greatest architect was born, raised, studied and began a career in structure design that was so revolutionary he couldn’t be accepted. Now, after years of work, Wright is dead. His work will never go out of “style.” It was not a style, it was style. Wright’s concepts of structure was such that it cannot be dated in any manner. Only his earlier houses and buildings might be dated because they are now so well known. His concept of design did away with ginger bread and such apurtenances that tract developers with an eye for the quick dollar have recently thrust upon the public. And the majority of the public now takes it for granted that this is something new. This is fallacy. Hansel and Gretel are not new. Indirect lighting, gravity floor heat, flat roofs, cantilevered structure in homes, use of natural finished woods, the so called California ranch style home, floor to ceiling window areas, storage walls and areas within the home that flowed into one another creating the “open plan were all from the fertile brain of Wright. They are not new. He incorporated them into homes before the turn of the century. Some builders and architects called him a crack pot. So were Einstein and Edison. He was a crack pot only in the sense that he did things in design that were so new, so revolutionary, that it took the minds of static cultures Europe and Asia to recognize his genius. He has won more international awards and decorations for design than any other man in the history of architecture. He was a living legend. He battled with planning commissions. He fought with restrictions. Each time he proved himself to know his own engineering so well he had to go into the field and set up test situations to convince bureaucratic minds he could do what he set out to do. The humiliation must have been tremendous for people who said low steel reinforced umnas. The planners grudged. They were hurt belief when the starton after ton of sand on its flaring top. The pillars with ten times the calichey possessed as capacity. It was broken on mushroom top on knocked to the ground. Wright never knew weight the pillars didn’t bother to finish. He knew the pillar work for which he signed. That was easy. He built the bus structure that is of the Johnson’s Wheel. When he first put heat in a small house experts and engineers manufacturing swarmed over the motometers and other devices. There was no need radiators, no vents heating ducts., and heating came from pipes which were crete floor slab. The humiliation must have been tremendous for people who said "Wright you can't do that because nobody else has done it before." One of the better examples was Wright's battle with the Racine Wisconsin city officials in 1935 when he submitted plans and designs for the Johnson's Wax Buildings. Planners turned him down cold. Wright invited them to witness a demonstration of static testing on building pillars which were hollowed steel mile high. Immediately criticized mouths and the hot dogma and baselier tried to wither his skin and construct thight out and which mark him. He proposed recycle steel mile high. He could have done anything. If that he didn't live do it and again shave with his engineer. He is dead but genius, will be those who studied west and east. His tinue to live just have always lived. HI Gardeners — rain! The planners grudgingly accepted. They were humiliated beyond belief when the standing pillar had ton after ton of sand bags piled up on its flaring top. The pillars withstood more than ten times the calculated amount they possessed as maximum load capacity. It was broken on the edge of the mushroom top only after being knocked to the ground by a crane. Wright never knew how much weight the pillars could stand. He didn't bother to find 'out. He knew the pillars could do the work for which they were designed. That was enough. He built the brick and glass structure that is now trademark of the Johnson's Wax Company. When he first put gravity floor heat in a small home in Illinois, experts and engineers from heating manufacturing companies swarmed over the floor with thermometers and other testing devices. There was no noise, no hissing radiators, no vents or screens over heating ducts., none of that. The heating came from hot water pipes which were inside a concrete floor slab. Wright theorized that since heat rose, it could be placed as low as possible over a wide area as possible thereby eliminating unsightly fixtures within the living area of the home. Home Builders See Big Year In '59 Installment Bu Home Builders See Big Year In '59 An exceptionally good home building year is in prospect for 1959, a national magazine said recently. Plans of 325 builders in 35 cities surveyed by the magazine indicate 1,350,000 starts in private nonfarm dwellings. The magazine says that with high demand and mortgage money easily forthcoming, units already built are presently selling faster than a year ago. The Federal Reserve Board reports that one-fourth more families this year intend to buy homes than last. Home building will have far better access to funds in the capital market than four years ago, for these reasons: Long term funds in general will be less tight than they were then. Mortgages can now compete more readily for available funds. A larger proportion of mortgages are of the conventional rather than the government-guaranteed type. Conventional Financing Today 68 per cent of all private housing units are being financed conventionally compared to 48 per cent in early 1955. The more conventional mortgages written, the less will home building suffer a cutback, the magazine says. But although financing remains relatively plentiful, costs to buyers are still high. Since 1955, interest rates on VA and FHA mortgages have risen about one percentage point, and conventional mortgages Supervisors Approve School District Change By OCNS Supervisors yesterday approved a school district change involving the Santa Ana and Costa Mesa elementary districts. Approved by the Orange County Supervisora was a change from the Santa Ana School district to the Costa Mesa district, a switch that had been approved by all parties concerned. Parents in the area had petitioned for a young couple that will really give them three rooms for the price of one. The furniture will be a nucleus for all their future planning and will fit into a moderate carefully-handled budget (Approximate costs: Upholstered pieces, $500; wooden pieces, $500. Everything except the lounge chair serves at least two purposes. Even the matching hassock may temporarily be an extra seating piece. The slim-lined sofa, with its half a point, to a present average of between five and a half and six per cent. While many builders expect the construction rate to climb into 1960, evidence suggests the present rate of 1,350,000 private nonfarm starts too great to sustain over the longer pull; for to this figure must be added publicly financed units and other buildings not included. Total nonfarm starts are probably running closer to 1,600,000. Nonfarm family formation as adding only about one million nonfarm households a year, so well over 500,000 units today are being devoted to replacement, not growth. The magazine advises that 1,200,000 is probably nearer "right" for the size of the sustained market demand the next few years; hence, construction may well decline to this level by 1960. SMALL TALK in the PATIO by ROY L. KIRK Hi Gardeners — Sure was a dry rain! Wasn't it? Well, I guess we just can't seem to get going this spring. Asters; Zinnias and a fine array of Petunias are ready to go now. These are just a few. For those of you who have that little creeping oxalis in your dichondra lawns, don't forget there is a killer on the market now and it really does a job too. It doesn't take much and it isn't expensive either. Ask about it. Snails and aphis are bad now; better get after them — lots of other pests are beginning to show now too, and if this warm weather keeps up they will be worse. Some mildew is showing on For those of you who have that little creeping oxallis in your dichondra lawns, don't forget there is a killer on the market now and it really does a job too. It doesn't take much and it isn't expensive either. Ask about it. Snails and aphids are bad now; better get after them — lots of other pests are beginning to show now too, and if this warm weather keeps up they will be worse. Some mildew is showing on Roses at this time. A good copper spray can help this, check it early. Fertilize and keep your Roses well watered now, they will begin to bloom strong very soon. Water trees well and especially all fruiting plants. Remember we were short of rain this year and plants really show it. New pool owners! Let us help you with some of your problems, plants and even chemicals too. See you next week. Take Hubby Along To Buy Furniture Wives, take your husbands along when you go shopping for furniture. Women who follow this practice say that the budget stretches magically when a man goes in a store. What papa wants, papa gets, even though it may cost a few dollars more. Many wives do the preliminary looking around first. They select a few-pieces that appeal to them, then take hubby in to help them reach the final decision. This way he has a chance to turn down anything he really dislikes. Furniture salesmen report that some husbands are able to help their wives reach better decisions. Besides being more alert to construction factors, they may have a keener sense of spacial relationships. They also may have had more opportunity to travel and to develop appreciation for good design. That's "some" husbands, not all. Of course, there always is the man who just hates to shop. In the long run he may be easiest to please. Make sure he has a nice arm chair and leave him at home while you enjoy the adventure of shopping.
