B-4—Anaheim (Cal.) Bulletin Friday, April 10, 1959 Plymouth Proves You Live Better by Far in New York If you don't believe that you can "live better by far with a brand new car," take a look at the findings of research by Plymouth division of Chrysler Corporation on how automotive and economic progress have gone hand-in-hand since the first Plymouth was built back in 1928. Plymouth researchers made comparison studies on car prices 31 years ago and today, as well as on the development of automobiles since the first Plymouth went on the market. Here is what they found out. The retail price, including Federal tax, posted on the window of a 1959 Plymouth Savoy two-door sedan is $2,232. To earn this amount, an hourly worker engaged in manufacturing would need to work about 1048 hours, based on the 1958 national average hodrily earnings of $2.13. In 1928, a Plymouth two-door sedan was advertised at $600. Average hourly earnings for the factory worker were 56.2 cents. It was necessary for him to work 1228 hours to earn the purchase price, 180 hours more than today's worker. The 180 hours saved, based on the 1958 average earnings, amount to a cash savings of $283.40 from the worker's income. And Plymouth executives point out that the savings is furthered by the extra value which has been built into the modern automobile. A comparison of the materials used makes the progress of which they speak readily apparent. The 1928 Plymouth used 2673 square inches of glass, and the frame weighed 160.5 pounds; its 1959 counterpart requires 4148 square inches of safety glass and its frame contains 282 pounds of steel. Brake lining square inches in 1959 up to 184 square inches. There is much space for passengers in 1959 than there is you carried luggage. Plymouth, in all life carried on the runneth was no trunk. Brake lining area was 114 square inches in 1928. Today it is up to 184 square inches. There is much more useable space for passengers and luggage in 1939 than there was in 1928. If you carried luggage with your 1928 Plymouth, in all likelihood it was carried on the running board; there was no trunk. Luggage space in the 1959 model amounts to 35.6 cubic feet. Hiproom has grown from 46 inches in 1928 to 63 inches. Considering performance, there is little comparison. The 1928 had one horsepower for every 55 pounds in its four-cylinder engine. Today's six has one horsepower for every 24.9 pounds, and Plymouth's standard V-8 delivers one horsepower for every 14.9 pounds. The modern car is more durable and delivers more mileage before being scrapped than did the car of 31 years ago. When the first Plymouth was offered, the average car lasted seven years and ran a total of 41,500 miles before it went to the graveyard. Now, according to industry estimates by the Automobile Manufacturers' Association, better cars, better roads, and better maintenance have extended car longevity to about 123,000 miles.
