I'll Handel This
By LEONARD R. HANDEL
(Bulletin Sports Editor)
A braggart, it is said, is someone who is constantly opening their mouth to put their feats into it.
If this be true then it is quite possible that those promoting the Floyd Patterson-Brian London heavyweight feud should rise to the top of the list in rapid-fire order.
The lads supporting this mismatch originally slated the deal for Lost Wages, Nevada, and then just when it appeared that all was going smoothly they moved it to Indianapolis.
Now, this in itself, is a real feat.
The Nevada City was planning on big doings for fight week and had given promoters all sorts of fine cooperation.
Reason for the switch was that fight authorities worried that a danger existed that fandom would believe the gamblers would have a bit too much to say about the battle should it be held in Las Vegas.
Now, here is the rub.
Prior to the decision to hold this flasco in Nevada those who placed it there were fully aware that slot machines do make an occasional appearance in that city.
They know further that Las Vegas is the gambling oasis of the West and still they went ahead with their plans to hold the bout there.
Suddenly, like a knight charging out of the darkness to save the poor damsel in distress, comes fistic officials who were worried about the presence of gamblers.
Ha.
It would seem more likely that there are still a number of factors which have not as yet come out of this deal which forced the change.
It seems strange that gambling would be a factor here when those who follow such things are not going to let a little thing like a trip to another state keep them from placing a few bucks on the outcome.
Another interesting item is that those who do wager on these types of sports attractions are not even taking the fight too seriously.
General opinion is that is just a warmup for the Summer mismatch which will pit the champ against Ingemar Johannsen.
At last reading the morning line has Patterson favored at 6-1 and the only way you could get this would be to drop a few dollars on something else, sort of a package deal.
Like we have said before.
It is our belief that the fight game has reached a point where it is going to have to look up to see bottom and such things as this will not help any.
British boxing authorities are still stating that they will believe that this bout will take place when the men step into the ring. This is a good point.
London has announced that he is ready to fly to the fight site, and Patterson is purportedly preparing for the start of training rigors.
Yet, it is still a good distance away and anything can happen.
No matter how you slice it London is no more a match for Patterson than the writer.

No matter how you slice it London is no more a match for Patterson than the writer.
He has an impressive record against many "no name" pugilists in the European area.
Patterson is still the victim of a "no opponent" problem.
It seems that even after the next two bouts the same will be true.
Certainly, either London or Johannsen could stop the present champ.
However, by the same token it is also true that the Good Humor Corporation may open up a branch office at the North Pole, but this is not expected.
Somehow we cannot get excited.
Whether the bout with London is held in Las Vegas, Indianapolis or the southern portion of the Upper Yukon, it still would smell not the least bit sweeter.
Television fans will be given a slight break, though.
The London tiff will be brought into the home, which means that when Floyd knocks him into the next county at the end of the third round there will still be time to watch the final scene of another commercial.
LONG BEACH SCENE
While the fistic whirl is going around in triangular circles those promoting the sport in Long Beach are advancing in giant-type steps.
Main reason for this is that they have brought forth a number of good bouts in recent weeks and promise many more to come.
It just might be that the beach city has come up with something real good.
At any rate, let's hope so.
Armstead Offers No Excuse In Losing Fight to Perkins
CHICAGO (UPI) — Paulie Armstead, the lightweight champion of California, had no excuses today for losing Wednesday night's television fight to Chicago Eddie Perkins but he said frankly, "I was lousy."
It was a split decision, giving Perkins his 23rd win in 28 pro fights and handing Armstead his 5th defeat in 47 bouts. It was the first appearance of Armstead in the United States outside of California.
"I don't know what was wrong with me," Armstead said. "I just couldn't do anything inside, and I was inside a lot. I don't know whether he (Perkins) was that good, or I was that bad. But I fought a lousy fight."
Perkins said he won the bout in the last five rounds. "I could feel it turn in the sixth round," he said. "Of course, I cut his eye early and he was protecting it with his guard high after that, so I could hit him in the body."
The bout wasn't one sided. Armstead landed with labs and at Giavits Drill For Opener With Cardinals

SM. LOUIS (UPI) — The San Francisco Giants were to work out in Eusch Stadium today in preparation for Friday's lid-lifter with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Giants closed out a so-so spring swing Wednesday in chilly Oranaha as they blanked the Cleveland Indians, 2-0.
Five San Francisco hurlers paraded to the hill and held the pennchless Indians to three scat-tured hits. The piecemeal shutout was accomplished by Jack Sanford, Al Worthington, Paul Giel Joe Shipley and Dom Zanni.
The Giants were only able to muster six hits, but Daryl Spencer and Andre Rodgers ripped back-to-back doubles and Leon Wagner later singled in Don Tausig to give the San Franciscans the win.
Manager Bill Rigney started the same lineup Wednesday which is most likely to take the field Friday; Jim Davenport 9b, Jackie Brandt M, Willie Mays cf, Orlando Cepeda 1b, Willie Kirkland rf, Daryl Spencer 2b, Andre Rodgers ss, and Bob Schmidt c. Wednesday's quintet of hurlers will be replaced by Johnny Antonelli on Friday.
The shutout of the Indians gave the San Franciscans a 15-13 exhibition record. Cleveland lost 9 out of 12 with the Giants, but San Francisco had an especially hard time with Boston, which captured 5 out of 7 games against the bay city team. San Francisco won 4 and lost 5 against the Chicago Cubs.

Mater Dei Tracksters to Meet Strong St. Francis Crew Tomorrow
By BOB LUSKEY
Rated as a heavy underdog although given a small chance to surprise, Coach Jack Dennen's Mater Dei track team will take on defending champ and loop favorite St. Francis tomorrow afternoon at three o'clock at Monarch field in the Parochial League crucial of the year.
The Monarchs, presently tied with St. Francis for the conference leadership with two wins and no losses, are given only an outside chance to hand the Golden Knights their first loss in three years.
The Knights have won the Parochial League dual meet title for two years running and a win over the Monarchs tomorrow would just about seep up a third straight trophy for the La Canadans.
Actually Mater Dei won the league championship two seasons back by snatching the All League meet, however the Knights nipped the Monarchs in dual contest that year so the loop ended in a co-championship.
Strong Attack
St. Francis poses and ever strong attack in both the sprints and field events while Mater Dei, given little chance to go all the way at the start of the campaign, is also powerful in the track part of the meet.
However, in the field events only the broad jump seems to be a Monarch shoo-in and the visitation Knights figure to build their winning score here, where Coach Denen's crew is the weakest.
Expected to carry the banner in tomorrow's crucial meet for Mater Dei will be Bob Kennedy in the 100-yard dash, 180 low hurdles, and Broad Jump while Lee Raab should give some added strength in the 120 high hurdles and Chuck Baer in the 440.

Fremont Nips Servite In Baseball Battle
By Steve Hudson
Pure determination wasn't quite enough as the Friars of Servite High dropped a close 3-1 decision to a flashy Fremont Junior Colonist ball club at Fremont yesterday.
Hitting told the tale as the Junior Colonists scored all three runs on clutch hits and heads up base running. It was the Friars inability to get hits when they were needed that beat them, loading the bases on three different occasions and bringing in the tally only once.
The Serviters started things off with a bang as lead-off man Mike Hunter tapped an easy roller to pitcher Georgie Knox who promptly fired a clean peg into the orange grove behind first base. After striking out Len Klikunas, Mike Hunter stole second base. This must have unnerved little George as he walked Tony Del Giorgio to put runners at the first two sacks. Dennis Russo grounded out, moving the runners up a notch, but a free pass was issued to Ronnie Thomas and the bases were loaded.
Jitterty George didn't settle down again until he had given a free ticket to second baseman Jim La Graffe scoring Hunter from third, Bill Tran striking out to end the Servite half of the inning.
Chucker Terry Ericsson, whose superb pitching held the Junior Colonists to just 4 hits, got the first two hitters on ground balls before walking Jim White. Clean-up hitter Bill Santy fouled out to end the inning.

Local Man Hits Hole in One
By WALLY TAFT
Bill Rasmussen, Anaheim, aced the sixth hole at the Anaheim Golf Center with a wedge. The remarkable thing about Bill's hole-one is that fact that Bill has only been playing golf for about four months.
Many golfers play a lifetime and never make a hole-in-one. Playing with Bill when he made that perfect shot were two other Anaheim golfers, Fred Hess and Mel Salveson.
When Rasmussen, decided to take up the game four months ago, the first thing he did was go out and take a series of lessons from the head professional at the Anaheim Golf Center, Cecil Harris.
Take Lessons
This is something all golfers should do before they go out and play their first game of golf. We have talked about this many times in the past but still you can go out to any golf course or driving range and see some of the most awkward swings and hand placements on the club, where the golfers using these swings don't Griffith Stadium, Nixon wants to make the ceremonial first five minutes before the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Senators launch the American League its 50th season at 1:30 p.m., before an expected crowd of 000. A forecast of "cloudy and er with rain likely" may ruin vice president's big chance to starter—just as it did in But, unlike the situation six ago, if today's game is wet out, Nixon will still get chance. The game would be scheduled for Friday—before senhower gets back from Auction. This was the first time an president has had the cereal pitching chore since 1944.

Bobby Scanlon Tests Zulueta in Main Fray
OAKLAND, Calif. (UPI) — Baby-faced Bobby Scanlon, who outpointed the fading Orlando Zulueta last month, meets another veteran tonight named Johnny Gonsalves and this time things could be a little rougher for the Buffalo, N. Y., Irishman.
Gonsalves has been fighting as a pro now for 11 years in constant quest of a title shot and recently started hitting harder as he opened a drive to get into the big money before time runs out.
Now 28, the slightly-haggard looking Gonsalves has been posted as a 7-5 favorite over Scanlon, who turned 23 in January. The gym experts figure that Gonsalves' artistic boxing ability and brisk counter punches will more than offset Scanlon's cuffing attack.
Irish Bobby has only lost two of his 35 fights and both defeats were at the hands of Paolo Rosit. He has one draw. Gonsalves' life mark is 51-15-3.
Chucker Terry Ericsson, whose superb pitching held the Junior Colonists to just 4 hits, got the first two hitters on ground balls before walking Jim White. Clean-up hitter Bill Santy fouled out to end the inning.
Less Jittery
A somewhat less jittery George Knox found the strike zone in the top of the second, fanning the side while giving up one hit, a single to Mike Hunter. In the Fremont half of the stanza Ericsson gave up consecutive walks to Bobby Morales and catcher Les Moss, Bill Shannon and George Knox promptly lined singles into center field scoring all base runners for the clinchers. Lead-off hitter Joe Williams smashed a single into left center field. With Knox going on the pitch he was well around second by the time the ball hit the ground and heading for home by the time it was recovered. But the Junior Colony didn't figure on the arm of left fielder Tony DelGiorgio, as the mighty surprised Mr. Knox was out at the plate by a country mile. The Fremonters picked up the insurance run in the fifth when first baseman Charlie Dean rapped a deep shot into left field for a double scoring Joe Williams from first.
The Serviters didn't give up without a fight though, as Ton DelGiorgio led off with a single to open the fatal seventh. Walks to Ronnie Thomas and Jim LaGraffe loaded the sacks with only one gone. But Mr. Knox proved he could pitch as well as hit in the clutch as he fanned pinch hitter Steve Zamora and pitcher Terry Ericsson to end the affair.
It was only the third loss for the Friars in ten starts giving them a 6-3-1 record for the season.
This is something all golfers should do before they go out and play their first game of golf. We have talked about this many times in the past but still you can go out to any golf course or driving range and see some of the most awkward swings and hand placements on the club, where the golfers using these swings just don't have a chance of ever hitting a straight ball consistently.
After all if you can't hit the ball somewhere close to where you are aiming, what chance have to better your game?
With a good sound grip and a few of the main fundamentals, there is always a good chance that you will always enjoy playing golf. You may never be in the class with the top amateurs or professionals that play practically every day, but you will enjoy going out to the golf course and make a small wager, as you will know approximately what you will shoot for the day.
If your game gets off, as all golfers do, from time to time, don't ask another sticker that probably knows less about the game than you do, just make an appointment with one of the golf professionals in your area and let him straighten you out.
Disneyland Golf Club deserves a hand of credit for the tournament schedule they maintain. This is rather a small group of golfers that get most out of the game by keeping their members thinking about when the next tournament will be so they can practice up and keep their game razor sharp.
All ardent golfers love tournaments as there is a certain satisfaction of telling your guests of how you won that certain trophy you place in your house so all your guest will be sure to see it as soon as they enter your home.

The meet, which was viewed by a large turnout of Orange County gasper fans, was one of the most interesting of the season with the Bob Hager-coached Colonists racing to their third straight Sunset League victory.
By virtue of their win, they now sport a perfect 3-0 mark.
The meet started out with Doug Hankins racing to the 120 low hurdle win, but then the Colony took over.

Bob McPhillips cruised to the 100 victory in 10.1 and George Bragg followed with a triumph in the 830. He toured the distance in 844.
It was then Fullerton's turn in the winner's circle as LeRoy Neal and Hankins raced to wins in the 880 and 220.
McPhillips, Anaheim's only double winner of the day, charged to a victory in the 220, when he hit the finish line in a sizzling 21.8.
It was the first time that the fine Colonist athlete competed in this event.
Fullerton then won the mile and it appeared that it was going to be nip and tuck for the decision.
