Dear Abby... It's Now or Never, Mom! by Abigail Van Buren DEAR ABBY: What can be done with a four-year-old child who sometimes stays up as late as 10 o'clock, doesn't shut her mouth and insists on sleeping with us nightly until we carry her into her own bed asleep? I am sick and tired of this. When I try to put her to bed at 8 o'clock she cries and screams and throws up her supper. My doctor says nothing is wrong with her and all she needs is DISCIPLINE, but he doesn't know how strong-willed she is. I am willing to try anything anyone suggests as I am ready for a nervous breakdown. MRS. W.D. DEAR MRS. W.D.: Your doctor is trying to tell you it is time you showed your child who is "boss." Put her in her own bed at 8 o'clock in spite of her tantrums. You might have to "tidy her up" and return her to bed again, but once she learns her scenes are futile there will be no more nonsense. DEAR ABBY: Recently you mentioned a woman who listened in on the party line and I thought you might enjoy knowing how I handled a similar experience. I had a private line but I used to call a friend who had a five-party line. We could hear her neighbor listening in because of the background music, children, etc. Finally I got tired of it and started to say the Apostle's Creed and my friend made the responses. Soon, BANG went the receiver. Another time I led the Rosary prayers — my friend responded. Bang it went again! I asked questions on religion — my friend replied. That snoopy neighbor sure learned a lot about our religion — but nothing else. By the way, I am 74. DEAR ABBY: Will you please help to settle a family argument? My mother-in-law says that Elizabeth Taylor is pushing forty. She also says that Loretta Young, Ginger Rogers and Joan Crawford are all pushing sixty and they were big stars when she was a little girl forty years ago. I'd appreciate a quick reply, Thanks. DEAR KAY: Your mother-in-law is pushing pretty hard. She has added approximately fifteen years to each of these ladies' ages. This is an old trick when an aging woman wants to knock a few years off her own age — she adds them on to some other woman's. DEAR ABBY: Is it proper to send wedding invitations to GROUPS of people? Last summer I worked in a factory and got to know our crew quite well. Could I send one invitation addressed to "THE CREW" at this factory? Thank you. GETTING MARRIED DEAR GETTING: It's improper. Gnawing Uneasiness By HENRY F. SCHULTE United Press International MADRID (UPI) — Francis Franco is only human. And so day he will die. It is not a surprising fact. But it is causing gnawing easiness to Spain, its friends and its enemies. Spain's future hinges on w and who succeeds the Caudia the Generalissimo, the 67-year- head of state who plays his car so close to his chest. During his first decade in post Franco steered Spain on a course which drew the hatred of Communist world and the scion of the democracies. When Communism and the Western demiracies shifted into cold war, Franco's Spain emerged from isolation to become an international Cederella. Today the West counts Spain one of its own. However, Russia also has been wooing Spain, the world waits. What Next? After Franco, a king? A relation? A democracy? If the Kremlin and the W House worry about a Franco- says that Loretta Young, Ginger Rogers and Joan Crawford are all pushing sixty and they were big stars when she was a little girl forty years ago. Labor Criticism Fails To Change Ike's Plans AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) — President Eisenhower showed no signs today of changing his plans for an extended vacation because of critical blasts from organized labor. The AFL-CIO Washington conference on unemployment aimed a number of shafts at the President Wednesday for playing golf while 4,362,000 Americans are unemployed. But Eisenhower took no cognizance of the critical storm in the nation's capital. He worked in his temporary office during the morning and golfed at the Augusta National Club during the afternoon. Press Secretary James C. Hagerty said the Chief Executive was aware of the labor criticism, but Hagerty left it at that. With the exception of an overnight speaking trip to Washington next week, Eisenhower was expected to remain in Augusta for another 10 days or more. SCHULTE United Press International DRID (UPI) — Francisco is only human. And some die. It is causing gnawing unness to Spain, its friends and enemies. Sin’s future hinges on what who succeeds the Caudillo, Generalissimo, the 67-year-old of state who plays his cards nose to his chest. Ring his first decade in power co steered Spain on a course in drew the hatred of the munist world and the scorn of democracies. When Comsm and the Western democrasis shifted into cold war, Fran-Spain emerged from isolation become an international Cinela. Day the West counts Spain as of its own. However, Russia has been wooing Spain, and world waits. What Next? After Franco, a king? A revolt? A democracy? the Kremlin and the White Sea worry about a Franco-less Spain, the Generalissimo apparently does not. He has erected a huge tomb for himself that rivals in splendor the pyramids of the pharaohs. In 1947 a referendum approved a Spanish bill of succession. Franco declared Spain a monarchy. He would choose the future king or, if he does or is incapacitated, a Council of the Realm would pick a Spanish king. There has been no official picking yet. But the odds on favorites are Prince Juan. Count of Barcelona and heir to Spain’s last king, Alfonso XIII, and Juan’s son, Prince Juan Carlos. The 21-year-old Juan Carlos is receiving an education fit for a king in Spain under Generalissimo Franco’s direction. His father, Don Juan, remains in Portugal. Franco Keeps Mum Is the future king to be Don Juan or Juan Carlos? If anyone knows, it is Franco. And Franco is not talking. The new cold war of the Spanish succession remains as an unfinished plank in Franco’s ambitious program for rebuilding Spain. Even his harshest critics admit Franco has come a long way toward rebuilding Spain after its bloody civil war. Excluded from the United Nations in 1945, Spain gained admission to most of its agencies in 1950, and in 1955 won full membership in the world body. The reason the United States helped engineer Spain’s admission was not that it loved Franco but that it feared Russia more. Some observers predict Franco’s death will signal a fight to the death between the rival Falange and the Army. Most of these foresee the army as the leader. But most Spaniards at least talk mainly of monarchy. From the man with the answers comes silence on the who and what of Spain’s future. Asked to comment on rumors he is alling and wants to step down, Generalissimo Franco laughed and said: “They can go on with those rumors. They bring me luck.” Fish are not born with scales but develop them later in life from under the skin.
