With Garvey reading "cool" poems and the Colonel sipping espresso at a coffee house, the show's followers should get some extra chuckles. In spite of a pat formula for all the dramas, in which Alan Mowbray and Frank Jenks are always setting out to save some poor soul from 'a swindler's wills,' the series seems to be growing in popularity among viewers. MORE COMEDY... Sports-easter Gil Stratton takes the role of a sailor on the Red Skelton Show tonight, with Jackie Coogan playing his buddy and Nobu McCarthy the girl they're pursuing. 8:30 p.m., Channel 2. DRAMA DOINGS... David Niven is back to host a new drama series featuring different stars each week. 16 p.m., Channel 4. Potent French Wines Termed 'Germ Killers' PARIS (UPI)—A good French wine will kill about the same number of germs as penicillin, a group of French scientists reported. But, even so, they suggested Frenchmen cut down on their drinking. The scientists, known as the High Committee of Studies of Alcoholism, said in a 223-page report sent to Premier Michel Debré that laboratory tests proved "wine is a powerful antibiotic comparable to penicillin." It said Dr. Jack Masquelier, a medical school professor in the wine capital of Bordeaux, showed wine was particularly effective against typhoid fever and paratyphoid bacilli, streptococcic and others, killed them on contact. County Employes Plan Big Blowout At Beach BALBOA (OCNS) — Orange County Employees Association will stage their fourth annual dinner meeting here April 23 at the Balboa Bay Club. Highlight of the annual gathering will be the installation of new officers. Dancing will follow the business portion of the event. Voting for the new officers will be staged here in Santa Ana from April 9 through 16. Present officers of the association include Ernie Thompson, president; Marguerite Harris vice president; Kurt Brittain, second vice president; Rachel Hill, secretary; and Paul Boeyink, treasurer. Lookin' and HOLLYWOOD — Jeanne Crain, who started her movie career in "Home in Indiana" while she was still in high school, says: "I missed a lot by slaving so young, and feel that I grew up too fast. While other kids were double-dating, I was studying my script for the next day's work. I wanted to play tennis and talk girl-talk with other girls — doing things girls love to do, mostly nothing — but there never was time. "I was making money, yet money doesn't mean much to a kid when she'd rather go to school dances and football games and do the giddy things. I had no time for giddy things then and I have no time for giddy things now. But I'm going to make time for a few of the things I want to do. I'm going back to school to study astronomy, which always fascinated me. Another thing — I'm going to haul out my paint box and go to art school. I've always loved painting, and I'm fairly good at it. Then I'm going to travel a bit, and first on my ports of call is the Caribbean.' Jeanne concluded, dreamily. On the gala stage of "Holiday for Lovers," I hardly recognized Jill St. John with her hair darkened for her role. "I like my hair much better red," she assured me, as we gingerly made our way over a network of cables to where her makeup man had the impos-sibe task of trying to improve on nature. The losers were a major and sergeant, technical advisors on a new movie, who insisted Bronx-born Sal have his ringlets sheared for the role of a recruit. A platoon of other actors obeyed the edict. But not Sal. When Mineo appeared for work the Army brass marched him off to the 20th Century-Fox barber shop and stood by amazed as Sol instructed the scalp butcher how to clip his locks down a fraction of an inch at a time. After an hour and a half the Army gave up, returning to the set. "I stayed a full two hours," Sal gloated. "When the barber finished I put on a GI hat and reported to the director." "But when I took off the hat the Army blew a gasket. It was just as long as ever. They just sort of gave up on the whole project." Weapon In Hand Mineo, a beagle-eyed youngster of 20, claims his hair is so curly it stands straight up when cut short. As he talked, he ran his fingers through his tangled waves, happy at his victory over the Army. He looked as if he hadn't been in a barber chair for a year. "When I played an Indian in 'Tonka' they wanted to cut my hair," he beamed. "But I refused and wore a wig instead. Two things have sorta been my trademark in movies — my hair and some kind of a weapon in my hand. Even in the Indian picture I packed around a tomahawk. "I started with a pocket knife in my first picture, 'Six Bridges to Cross,' then it was a pistol in 'Rebel Without a Cause.'" Sal graduated to switchblade knives and brass knuckles in "Somebody Up There Likes Me." Since then he's packed popcorn palaces with teenagers who might fall to recognize him without the ever-present armament. "I guess I'll never play a clean-cut, All-American boy role," Mineo said. "I don't look the type. No one ever mistakes me for Pat Boone." Close To Teenagers In keeping with his tousled hair-do, Sal again carries a weapon in his latest film; "A Private's Afair." This time it's an M-1 rifle. My bad-kid roles have helped me with the teenagers because no matter how bad I am the character is always sympathetic." Sal went on. "They feel sorry for a kid who's gone wrong. But I want to make it clear there is no relationship between my screen roles and my own personal life. Lots of kids think I'm a tough guy in person, and they tell me to look 'em up if I ever get into trouble. "I get as close to teenagers of all kinds as any actor can, and I find that more than 90 percent of them are gay." Teamster Pay Raise Set in Orange County LOS ANGELES (UPI) — Members of four Teamsters Union locals have approved a new contract with operators of approximately 100 van and storage firms in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, it was announced today. The contract gives about 1,500 drivers, warehousemen and helpers a 13-cent hourly pay boost retroactive to April 1, and an additional 12 cents effective April 1, 1960. Members of locals 389 of Los Angeles, 602 of Long Beach, 325 of Orange County, and 871 of Pomona approved the pact at a meeting here Sunday. R. JOE QUAST and SONS PLUMBING and REPAIR KE 5-2506 306 N. Ran into Carol Lynley, who was finishing her role in "Holiday" and immediately stepping into "Blue Denim," with not even an hour off. Publicist Sonia Wolfson was commiserating with Carol over the rapid transition, but Carol said: "Oh, but I love it this way!" Carol tells me her doctor has her on a rigid diet, where she just heats and eats her food, none of it very tasty. "But if I establish good eating habits while I'm young, I won't have a weight problem when I'm older," she philosophized.
