Tab Yankees, Braves; What Else is New?
By JOHN GRIFFIN
United Press International
NEW YORK (UPI) — It'll be the New York Yankees and Milwaukee Braves again this year—with the Yankees winning the World Series.
The United Press International Board of Baseball Experts made the Yankees an overwhelming American League choice but gave the Braves only 60 per cent of their votes in the National League balloting of their annual survey.
Thirty of the 50 experts chose the Yankees to win the World Series, nine picked the Braves, six tabbed the San Francisco Giants, four favored the Pittsburgh Pirates and one chose the Detroit Tigers.
The order of finish predicted for the American League was the Yankees first, followed by the Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Athletics and Washington Senators. In the National League it was the Braves, followed by the Giants, Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, a sixth-place tie between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, and the Philadelphia Phils.
Forty-five experts picked the Yankees to win in the AL, three had them second and two placed them third. The Indians received four of the remaining first-place votes and the Tigers got one.
The Braves received 30 first-place votes and the Pirates nine. The Giants beat out the Pirates for second-place in the overall voting, 325-317.
The overall point totals gave the Yankees 393 and the Braves 375 of a possible 400.
ing champ Bill Hicke and Al McNeil both cracked the Buffalo nets to put the Americans temporarily in front, 2-1. Sweeney then hit for his first of two goals to make the score, 2-2, at the end of the second period.
In the third period neither team was able to score, and the game went into sudden death overtime. With a little over two minutes gone by the clock, Sweeney again connected.
Leading three games to one, the Bisons can clinch the series when the two teams resume action Tuesday night at Buffalo.
