BACILLUS BATH — Insect Pathologist Irvin M. Hall, University of California, Riverside, dips alfalfa foliage in "living insecticide" solution to test its lethal effect on saltmarsh caterpillars. Success of these laboratory tests led to field experiments in which dusts and sprays containing living bacilli knocked out 99 per cent of the alfalfa caterpillar infesting selected Imperial Valley fields. Hall dicts a good future for such microbial compounds in American agriculture as insects become creasingly resistant to chemicals.

Bacillus Effective in Eradicating Alfalfa Caterpillars -- Other Pests
"Living insecticides" have scored a new success in field tests by University of California scientists at Riverside Campus.
Dr. Irvin M. Hall reports that a bacillus gave 99 per cent kill of alfalfa caterpillars in an Imperial valley field.
Air and ground applications of "Bacillus thuringiensis," first microbial compound in commercial production, almost completely knocked out the serious alfalfa pest in 24 hours, says the Riverside insect pathologist.
With Entomologist Vernon M. Stern, also of the Citrus Experiment Station here, Dr. Hall applied one and a half to 18 ounces of microbial material per acre in 12 gallons of water. The lowest dosage was quite effective.
Results compared well with standard chemical treatments and costs should be comparable, Hall reports.
Previously Hall has reported success with the bacillus against two pests of cauliflower and cabbage — the cabbage looper and the imported cabbageworm.
On these as well as the alfalfa caterpillar, the bacillus acts as a stomach poison. The insects swallow it, sicken and die.
Commercial production of the bacillus is still in its early stages. None is available for general grower use, but it may be on the market with Federal clearance within the next year, Hall believes.
The alfalfa caterpillar is one of the most serious pests of alfalfa, California's principal forage crop. The pest causes damage and control expense amounting to more than $1,000,000 yearly, Hall estimates.
Two-fold Advantage
Advantages of the living material are twofold: insects so far have shown no ability to develop resistance to the attacking bacillus; and
a rather rare insect in California in recent years, but which has reappeared in Ventura county, causing some crop damage.
Other insects against which Hall has found the bacillus effective or promising are the housefly, the avocado leaf roller, the Egyptian weevil, the salt marsh caterpillar and the cotton bollworm.
A large commercial test of the bacillus is being made in Costa Rica., says Hall. Entomologists there are planning to use large quantities of the material on a caterpillar attacking bananas.
In fact, studies across the nation are showing so much promise for B. thuringiensis that five companies are "tooling up" for large-scale production, Hall reports.
Dust or Spray
The bacillus can be applied as a dust or as a spray. Against the alfalfa caterpillar, Hall and Stern used the spray form. The spray can be applied by ground power rig or by air.
Against the cabbage looper and the imported cabbageworm, Hall and Entomologist Lloyd A. Andres got good results with dusts applied by hand or power equipment.
What causes the bacillus's highly lethal effect on some insects?
It seems to be a poisoning effect caused by toxic crystals which are formed by the bacillus during spore production. The crystals are ingested along with the spores of the bacillus when an insect feeds on treated foliage.

Two-fold Advantage
Advantages of the living material are twofold: insects so far have shown no ability to develop resistance to the attacking bacillus; and the material makes it unnecessary to use chemicals, of which may harm beneficial insects. Extensive experiments have shown that Bacillus thuringiensis has no harmful effect on man and other warm-blooded animals.
Bacillus thuringiensis has also shown promise in limited trials on the cotton leaf perforator, says Hall. Tests indicate it may show up well against the celery leaf tier, rig or by air.
Against the cabbage looper and the imported cabbageworm, Hall and Entomologist Lloyd A. Andres got good results with dusts applied by hand or power equipment.

It seems to be a poisoning effect caused by toxic crystals which are formed by the bacillus during spore production. The crystals are ingested along with the spores of the bacillus when an insect feeds on treated foliage.
The nature of this toxin is not known. If its chemical composition can be determined, eventually it might be synthesized. Conceivably the synthetic form could lead to a potent, highly specific insecticide.
Whether or not anything develops from the toxic crystal-study, Hall believes microbial insecticides such as bacillus thuringiensis have an important future role in American agriculture.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Leyh, of Stanford Ave., celebrated their wedding anniversary with a day at Knott’s Berry Farm, and dinner at the famous chicken dinner restaurant there. Mrs. Leyh was born in France but lived for many years as a member of the Monaco Prince Rainier household staff.
Among her souvenirs from foreign lands she has many medals, memorites of Prince Rainier’s father, snapshots of the prince when a small child. She served as a nurse in the first World War, also in Africa, Italy, and can speak seven languages. She is very proud of her status as a U. S. citizen, acquired about five years ago.
The Gordon Dodges, who have resided for two years on West St., have returned to New Hampshire. Dodge, in 1956, requested a transfer from the Portsmouth Navy Yard, which is in Maine, to California, which resulted in being sent to the Long Beach Shipyard. His wife and two little daughters came west with him and they made their home at 12555 West St. During 1958 another little daughter was born to them. Homesickness, however, proved too much for Mrs. Dodge, who could not content herself away from her former home and relatives, feeling herself a stranger in exile. So a few months ago they made plans to return. Word comes from Dover, N. H. they arrived in one of the worst blizzards this year and had nothing but snow, ice and rug or by air.
Against the cabbage looper and the imported cabbageworm, Hall and Entomologist Lloyd A. Andres got good results with dusts applied by hand or power equipment.
